Description / Table of Contents: Abstract K/Ar dating of micas from rocks of Fichtelgebirge and the northern Oberpfalz (NE-Bavaria) covers the rather wide range from 330 to 300 Ma. In combination with Rb/Sr wholerock isochron ages of post-tektonic granites four Variscian events can be traced: 1) Regional metamorphism ∼ 330 Ma, 2) Intrusion of the older post-deformative granite G1 about 320 Ma (Falkenberger Granit) followed by rapid cooling. 3) About 300 Ma ago the older mineral ages were more or less reset by the intrusion of younger granites (G2 to G4, Flossenbürger Granit) again followed by a rapid cooling. 4) Local influences later than 290 Ma are recorded by some white micas in fault gauges at least up to the middle Jurassic (〈 150 Ma). The different U-black ore types yielded strongly discordant U/Pb dates. Applying the three dimensional U/Pb-discordia plane method the following results have been obtained: the older pitchblende generation with an upper concordia intersection of 336±17 Ma can be correlated with the regional metamorphism as well as with the intrusion of the older post-deformative granites. The younger generation with 298±4 Ma is of equal age as the intrusion of the younger granites. The brannerite mineralisation which according to thin section evaluation must be still younger could be only roughly dated to 288±78 Ma. The low precision is due to low uranium concentration and high common lead contents of the samples. The lower concordia intersection ages are 0 to 7 Ma. They were obtained more precisely by dating of secondary U-minerals: 10 torbernite samples with extremely high238U/206Pb-ratios of 30 000 to 50 000 yielded a positive slope of the discordia which points to an age of (137±12)×103a. The230Th/238U-activity ratio of 0.68 determined byα-spectrometry indicates an age of (130.4±5.0)×103 a. Pyrite and chalcopyrite samples which had U-concentration of some 100 ppm and which according to thin section evaluation are younger than the brannerite showed a positive slope of the207Pb/206Pb vs.238U/206Pb discordia, too. They could not be dated because the207Pb/206Pb-ratios corrected for common lead contribution are lower than 0.046 (radiogenic lead of zero age). This may be explained by an addition of206Pb due to222Rn migration from the pitchblende in only a few cm distance.

Notes: Abstract The uppermost unit of the Cretan nappe system consists of ophiolites on the top, and an ophiolitic mélange at the base. Among the various constituents of the mélange, there are slices of low-P/high-T metamorphics. They form a variegated series consisting of tholeiitic ortho-amphibolites, para-amphibolites, andalusite and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet bearing mica schists, calcsilicate rocks, and marbles. The metamorphic sequence is locally intruded by early tectonic magmatites of gabbroic, dioritic and granitic composition. Critical mineral assemblages lead to a maximum temperature of about 700° C reached during metamorphism, at a total pressure of 4–5 kilobars. K — Ar dating on 6 hornblendes, 7 biotites and 1 muscovite yielded cooling ages of 75–66 m.y. and confirmed earlier results according to which the metamorphism and related magmatism took place in Late Cretaceous times. In order to evaluate the age relationships between the hightemperature metamorphics within the ophiolitic mélange and the ophiolites, hornblendes from ultramafic and mafic rocks of the ophiolite complex were dated by the K — Ar method. Hornblende from one schistose hornblendite forming a constituent of the ophiolites proper yielded 156 m.y. and thus provides a middle Jurassic minimum age for the formation of this piece of oceanic lithosphere. Four hornblendes of calc-alkaline gabbrodiorite dikes within the ophiolite complex gave distinctly lower K — Ar dates of about 140 m.y.. The dikes probably intruded after the detachment of the ophiolites in an island-arc or continental-margin environment. As a consequence, the high-temperature metamorphics and related intrusives in the ophiolitic mélange of Crete are genetically unrelated to the overlying ophiolites. The paleogeographic position of the crystalline terrane, slices of which are now incorporated into the ophiolitic mélange is still open to discussion.

Notes: Abstract The Kallithea intrusive complex on Samos forms part of the Miocene granitoid province of the central Aegean. The complex consists of numerous composite dikes consisting of different I-type diorites, monzodiorites, (quartz) monzonites, granodiorites, and granites, as well as rare pegmatites. Within individual dikes the different rock types display various structural relationships to each other, most of which indicate that multiple intrusion was the main process responsible for the association of different rock types. Petrographical, geochemical, and Sr isotope data prove that at least some of the different magma pulses were genetically unrelated. For others, a comagmatic relationship cannot be excluded. The most spectacular feature of the composite dikes are net-veined parts in which spherical (pillow-like) to angular bodies of microdiorite are surrounded by a network of more felsic rocks of varying compositions (monzonites, granodiorites, and monzogranites). — For the microdiorite/monzogranite pairs, a formation by unmixing due to liquid immiscibility is suggested by the following facts: (a) the presence of monzogranite ocelli within the microdiorite bodies, (b) similar compositions of those minerals present in both the basic and felsic parts, (c) the enrichment of HFS elements in the basic parts and the depletion of these elements in the acid parts, (d) similar Sr isotope initial ratios. Such an origin, however, is excluded for the other net-veined parts having felsic veins of either monzonitic or granodioritic compositions. In these pairs, the HFS elements are enriched in the acid parts, common minerals may have different compositions, and Sr isotope initial ratios are different. These net-veined parts can only be explained by the model of multiple injections whereby a felsic melt intruded into a basic magma.

Notes: Abstract Polymetamorphic rocks of Sifnos (Greece) have been investigated by Rb-Sr, K-Ar, and fission track methods. Critical mineral assemblages from the northern and southernmost parts of Sifnos include jadeite+quartz+3T phengite, and omphacite+garnet +3T phengite, whereas the central part is characterized by the assemblage albite+chlorite+epidote+2M 1 phengite. K-Ar and Rb-Sr dates on phengites (predominantly 3T) of the best preserved high P/itTmetamorphic rocks from northern Sifnos gave concordant ages around 42 m.y., indicating a Late Lutetian age for the high P/T metamorphism. Phengites (2M 1+3T) of less preserved high P/T assemblages yielded K-Ar dates between 48 and 41 m.y. but generally lower Rb-Sr dates. The higher K-Ar dates are interpreted as being elevated by excess argon. K-Ar and Rb-Sr ages on 2M 1 phengites from central Sifnos vary between 24 and 21 m.y. These ages date a second, greenschist-facies metamorphism which overprinted the earlier high-pressure metamorphic rocks.

Notes: Abstract The lower tectonic unit of Ios provides evidence of an at least four stage metamorphic and intrusive history which well might be generalized for large parts of the internal Pelagonian. Metamorphic country rocks of unknown age were intruded about 500 Ma ago, as concluded from a Rb-Sr whole rock (WR) isochron on relic tonalites to granodiorites which largely escaped the polyphase postmagmatic overprints. A Hercynian amphibolite facies metamorphism, during which the igneous rocks were partly recrystallized to orthogneisses, is dated by a lower intercept age of 300–305 Ma of U-Pb determinations on zircons and by three almost concordant Rb-Sr muscovite-WR ages of 295 to 288 Ma. K-Ar analyses on these muscovites and on biotites, and Rb-Sr tie lines WR-biotite and WR with other relic magmatic minerals yielded various apparent ages between 260 and 60 Ma. They are interpreted as mixed ages between a Hercynian cooling age and the two stage Alpidic overprints. White micas formed during the Eocene high P/T and/or Oligocene/Miocene Barrovian-type overprints yielded K-Ar dates ranging from 82 to 26 Ma, as well as a single Rb-Sr date of 13 Ma. These Alpidic dates resemble the more detailed age patterns of other Cycladic islands. But they are not sufficient for an independent dating of the Tertiary evolution on Ios island.

Notes: Abstract In Poterioochromonas malhamensis, osmotic regulation is mainly mediated by the formation and degradation of isofloridoside (α-galactosyl-1→1-glycerol). In cell homogenates an α-galactosidase can be demonstrated. About one hour after an increase in external osmotic pressure, the enzyme activity increases. external osmotic pressure, the enzyme activity increases. The increase is more pronounced with a higher osmotic change and appears to be due to de novo synthesis of the enzyme, as it can be prevented by preincubation with actinomycin D or actidion. When the increase in α-galactosidase was suppressed with actinomycin D, the in vivo degradation rate of isofloridoside was slowed down. These results indicate a function of the α-galactosidase in osmotic regulation.
