    Notes: Abstract The acclimated reproduction rates of 14 clones of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana were measured at 12°, 16°, 20°, and 24°C. Reproduction rate increased monotonically with an increase in temperature in all 14 clones. Significant genetic variability in reproduction rates and electrophoretic mobility of isozymes were observed among clones within a population from a single water bottle collected in a warm core eddy overlying slope water. The major genetic differentiation was between neritic and oceanic populations, with neritic clones having higher reproduction rates at all 4 temperatures. Surprisingly small genetic differences were observed among clones from neritic waters around the world. The slopes of the temperature-reproduction rate plots of all 14 clones were quite similar.

    Notes: Abstract A distributed feedback (DFB) laser module has been developed for 2.5 Gbs-1 optical transmission systems. The DFB laser has a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) active layer and a planar buried heterostructure (PBH) for a low threshold current and stable singlemode operation with low chirping. A PBH DFB laser module with a single-mode fibre pigtail and an optical isolator was designed and fabricated by employing a single lens and a laser welding method. The fabricated MQW PBH DFB laser module is shown to be a suitable light source for 2.5 Gb s-1 optical transmission systems with a minimum received power of-33 dBm after 47 km conventional optical fibre transmission.

    Notes: Abstract The coupling effect of thermal and mechanical behaviour of metallic materials was studied by uniaxial tensile test. Heat transfer exists as the specimen is loaded from zero over elastic to plastic region. Cooling occurs in the elastic region and heating in the plastic region. Both theoretical model and experimental results are presented. The theoretically derived model, Θ = − (αT o/ρC v)σ zz , which takes exclusively thermoelastic effect into account, explains the cooling phenomenon well. The thermoelastic limit coincides with yield where the temperature drops to its lowest value. This is characterized by the occurrence of an inversion of the trend of temperature against stress. Experimental results on normalized AISI 1045 mild steel reveal a relative maximum temperature drop of about 0.4 K, which is slightly less than as theoretically predicted. Instead of the usual 0.2% offset method, the lowest temperature method introduced here will be preferred in defining the yield stress for its unambiguous and empirical evidence.

    Notes: Abstract Temperature variation induced by repeated mechanical cyclic loading on AISI 1045 mild steel was studied.The experimental results of cyclic loading at low stress levels elucidate the coupling phenomena of thermal/mechanical behaviour which causes cooling and/or heating corresponding to the stressed state. The governing factors are thermoelastic effect and viscous dissipation. The thermoelastic effect causes the specimen temperature to go down and/or up which corresponds to the loading and/or unloading in cycling, where the viscous dissipation effect causes heat to generate inside the sample which steadily heats the specimen. As a result, a trend of increasing specimen mean temperature with periodical local fluctuation on temperature history can be observed. The heating rate, due to viscous dissipation, is increased with increasing strain rate. Cyclic loading at high stress levels results in large amounts of heat generation where thermoplasticity predominates. An abrupt temperature rise in the first few cycles, followed by a slow-down in later cycling, is to be seen. The phenomena and results were discussed. In addition, the effect of heat transfer between the specimen and its surroundings should be considered for both cases if the time is sufficiently long or the temperature gradient evolved is of significance.

    Notes: A new and relatively convenient procedure for obtaining kinetic parameters in the degradation of high polymers is described and the necessary experimental procedure is outlined. Results for the degradation of Teflon are compared with several previously reported methods and the agreement is found to be good. Some advantages and disadvantages of the various methods are discussed.

    Notes: Poly-n-octyl methacrylate, prepared by the emulsion technique, was fractionated three times by the fractional precipitation procedure to obtain eight fractions. Relationships between viscosity and weight-average molecular weight were obtained in both an ideal solvent, n-butanol, and a nonideal solvent, methyl ethyl ketone. These relationships are represented by the equations, [η]16.8Θ = 2.68 × 10-4M0.50w [η]23 = 4.47 × 10-5M0.69w, respectively. The effect of the size of the pendant groups (-methyl, -ethyl, n-butyl, -n-hexyl, and -n-octyl ester) on the degree of extension of macromolecules in ideal solvents is discussed. It was found that, initially, as we progress from polymethyl to poly-n-butyl methacrylate, the degree of flexibility of the macromolecule increases as the size of the pendant group increases. These results are believed to be due to the short-range interference effect of the solvent molecule on the degree of free rotation of the macromolecule. However, it was found that poly-n-hexyl methacrylate chains have considerably greater chain extension than any of the other three polymers. This expansion of poly-n-hexyl methacrylate chains is a result of the steric effect of large pendant units. From the results obtained for n-octyl polymer, it is evident that, in spite of further increase in the size of the pendant group by —(CH2)2—, there is a substantial contraction in the n-octyl polymer chain. The reason for this reversal in the polymer chain expansion is not clearly understood at present.
