Notes: Abstract Transcription, DNA topoisomerases and genetic recombination are interrelated for several structural reasons. Transcription can affect DNA topology, resulting in effects on recombination. It can also affect the chromatin structure in which the DNA resides. Topoisomerases can affect DNA and/or chromatin structure influencing the recombination potential at a given site. Here we briefly review the extent to which homologous direct repeat recombination and site-specific recombination in eukaryotes are affected by transcription and topoisomerases. In some cases, transcription or the absence of topoisomerases have little or no effect on recombination. In others, they are important components in the recombinational process. The common denominator of any effects of transcription and topoisomerases on recombination is their shared role in altering DNA topology.

Notes: Summary Of 39 human kidney carcinoma transplanted to nude mice, four tumor lines were maintained on nude mice by serial transplantation. The established tumor cell lines were used to determine the assay evaluability of three different drug-testing systems: the subrenal capsule assay (SRC), the in vitro assay with labeled DNA precursor (L-DNA-P) and the stem cell assay (STC). Tumor cell lines were used because they allowed us to perform the different assays with the same tumor. Criteria for assay evaluability were measurable growth of the transplanted tumor fragment (histologically proved) in the SRC-assay, the amount of thymidine incorporation in relation to the number of cells in vitro and time of incubation in the L-DNA-P-assay, and a mean colony count for the sixfold plated cells of 50 or greater in the STC-assay. The criteria for evaluability were fulfilled when athymic or irradiated immunocompetent mice were used for the SRC-assay. However, in immunocompetent, non-irradiated mice, remarkable incursion of host cells was found. In the L-DNA-P-assay, optimal incorporation was reached after different times of culture, with different cell numbers. Therefore the technique of assaying with labeled DNA precursor lacks optimally defined assay conditions. The tumor cell lines examined in the stem cell assay demonstrated excellent growth; they therefore may be useful for pharmacological studies of drug interactions.

Notes: Summary A decade has now passed since “renal oncocytoma” became a diagnosis of acute interest to urologists, radiologists and pathologists. The number of patients with renal oncocytoma continues to increase; now a total of over 340 reported cases are available for analysis. Approximately 3% of tumors previously diagnosed as renal cell carcinomas are now considered to be renal oncocytomas. The overwhelmingly benign clinical behavior of typical renal oncocytomas seems well established. At present, there is no definitive way to make the diagnosis of renal oncocytoma preoperatively. Because renal oncocytomas are not so rare, clinicians dealing with solid renal tumors must keep in mind this diagnosis and its possible bilateral and multifocal occurrence. Conservative renal parenchyma sparing operations for oncocytomas should be encouraged.

Notes: Abstract Background. There is a need for reliable monitoring of workforce trends in the field of pediatric radiology by the Society for Pediatric Radiology. In addition, the Society should periodically assess itself as to its mission and relevance to its members via membership surveys.¶Objective. The Membership Committee of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, 1999, conducted a 54-question survey to determine the makeup of its members, job profiles, satisfaction with services of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, and its official journal, Pediatric Radiology.¶Materials and methods. Seven hundred fifty surveys were given to active members of the Society for Pediatric Radiology in the United States and Canada. There were 275 surveys returned for an overall response of 37 %.¶Results. Mean age of members is 48 years with 99 % of respondents working. Membership is 34 % female and 66 % male. Women members of the Society are younger (45 vs 49 years, P = 0.0012) and work less hours (47.8 vs 51.0, P = 0.0135) than men. Fifty-seven percent of respondents practice in a freestanding children's hospital, 29 % in a “children's hospital within a hospital,” and 14 % are in community hospitals or an office-based practice. Eighty-two percent of the responding pediatric radiologist's time is spent in performing examination on children, with only 18 % spent on adult work or administration. Forty-eight percent work at more than one office. Sixty-one percent worked evenings or weekends, excluding night call. Two hundred twenty-two of 275 respondents had received a Certificate of Added Qualification. The meeting “for CME credit” was considered the most important benefit of Society membership. Most respondents read select articles in Pediatric Radiology. There was sentiment to decrease esoteric case reports in favor of review articles. Only 19 % of respondents submitted their articles to Pediatric Radiology initially.¶Conclusion. Pediatric radiologists are a diverse membership with the common goal of advocating for healthcare and imaging in children. Survey information given to the leadership of the Society will help the organization remain responsive to its members.
