Notes: In a previous study, we determined the epitope of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa Hsp60 heat shock protein which is recognized by the specific monoclonal antibody (MAb) 2528. Subsequent investigations revealed a weak cross-reactivity of MAb 2528 with P. stutzeri, P. alcaligenes, P. mendocina and P. pseudoalcaligenes. To elucidate the molecular structure for these cross-reactions, we cloned the P. stutzeri hsp60 gene in Escherichia coli and determined the nucleotide sequence of the gene. In addition, the hsp60 gene of further Pseudomonas species was amplified and sequenced and amino acid substitutions within the epitope recognized by MAb 2528 were determined. The decapeptide QADIEARVLQ is unique to the P. aeruginosa Hsp60 protein, and cross-reaction of MAb 2528 reflects the phylogenetic relationship of Pseudomonas species as P. aeruginosa and all four cross-reacting species constitute a DNA homology group within the rRNA group I of the family Pseudomonadaceae, which belong to the γ- subclass of the Proteobacteria.

Notes: Abstract The potential tubulotoxicity of tobramycin and cefotaxim were assessed in neonates by measuring the urinary level of adenosine deaminase binding protein (ABP) and urinary α1-microglobulin and β2-microglobulin. In a prospective study, 33 neonates who received tobramycin and cefotaxim for suspected neonatal sepsis were compared with 48 untreated newborns during the first 10 days of life. The urinary concentrations of ABP and its excretion rates, corrected for body weight and body surface area, were significantly increased from the 1st day of treatment. Urinary α1-microglobulin and β2-microglobulin were not elevated under tobramycin and cefotaxim during the first 2 days of treatment. We conclude that ABP may be a sensitive marker for the detection of proximal renal tubular injury during tobramycin and cefotaxim treatments of neonates. The increase in urinary ABP which occurs before an elevation of urinary α1-microglobulin and β2-microglobulin may reflect earlier structural than functional alterations. However, since none of the treated infants had signs of electrolyte disorders or glomerular dysfunction, the clinical relevance of ABP measurement should be reevaluated.

Notes: Rubidium salts with N-(Arylazoalkenoyl)azacoronands (2a-c), were investigated using 87Rb and 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy. From the NMR results it is concluded that there is a host-gust interaction. This suggests that the rubidium and ammonium ions, respectively, are incorporated into the cavity between the coronand and the chromophore.

Description / Table of Contents: Basic Aluminum Salts and their Solutions. X. NMR-Investigations on the Tridecameric Al-Oxo-Hydroxo CationUsing solid-state high resolution 27Al-NMR it is shown that in the basic aluminum chloride with a degree of alkalinity r = OH/Al = 2.5 cations of the [Al13O4(OH)25(H2O)11]6+ type exist. The 1H-NMR detects besides the constitutional water still an amount of mobile, enclosed H2O molecules which can be removed by thermal treatment at 104°C. The 27Al spectrum of the aqueous solutions of the chloride shows only one peak at 62.5 ppm which is characteristic for the tridecameric cation. Adding HCl to the solution causes a decomposition to low-molecular species (peak at 0 ppm). Adding NaOH to the aqueous solution of the chloride effects a rearrangement of the tridecameric cations to higher molecular particles which are no more accessible by 27Al-NMR.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Coordination of Al in β-LiAlO2By using 27Al-NMR and the determination of the contribution of Al2O3 to the molar refractivities, the octahedral coordination of Al in α-LiAlO2 respectively the tetrahedral coordination in γ-LiAlO2 has been confirmed. For β-LiAlO2 the results show that there only tetrahedrally coordinated Al occurs, contrary to earlier statements given in literature.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Crystalline Phases of the Systems M2IO—Al2O3—H2O (MI = K, Na)In the system K2O—Al2O3—H2O the compounds K2O · Al2O3 · 3 H2O, K2O · Al2O3 · 2 H2O and K2O · Al2O3 · 1 H2O exist. The results of 27Al and 1H NMR and IR spectroscopic investigations as well as thermoanalytical measurements confirm the existence of dimeric anions with tetrahedrally coordinated Al for the 3-hydrate. In the case of the two other hydrates higher molecular anions occur, also formed by AlO4 tetrahedra. In the system Na2O—Al2O3—H2O a compound with a composition Na2O · Al2O3 · 2,5 H2O and two alkali oxide rich phases (Na/Al 〉 3) are observed. In monosodium aluminate hydrate there are highly polymerized anions with tetrahedrally coordinated Al, whereas the alkali oxide rich phases are probably built up by monomeric [Al(OH)6]3- anions.
