Notes: Abstract We investigate Dyson's hierarchical vector valued φ4 model at low temperatures. The case $$2 〉 c 〉 \sqrt 2 $$ is considered. The pure phase is constructed, and the existence of its large scale limit is proved. The limit is Gaussian, but an unusual normalization has to be chosen. In the direction of the spontaneous magnetization one has to divide by the square root of the volume, but in the orthogonal direction one has to divide by a different power of the volume for all low temperatures.

Notes: In porous media, positron annihilation techniques (PAT) revealed the existence of annihilation modi with long lifetimes connected to structural and extrastructural free volumes acting as trapping centres for o-Ps. Our aim in this work was to study the influence of the synthesis applied for the production of the zeolite framework and the correlation between the trapping pattern and crystallization progress. PAT lifetime (LT) measurements were performed in silicalite-1 samples in various stages of crystallization and a large change was observed in the long components. The results are discussed in connection to the crystallization and the availability of free volume

Notes: Commercial allergen extract preparations of whole cereal grains were examined in vitro for their reactivity with the human haemolytic complement cascade. Total haemolytic complement was consumed in a dose-dependent manner which did not correlate with the protein nitrogen content or bacterial endotoxin contamination of the extracts. Alternative pathway activation was shown by C3 conversion in the presence of EGTA while classical complement components C1, C4 and C2 were also much decreased in serum which was free of detectable specific antibody. Very small amounts of allergen extract initiated the formation of complement-dependent factors which were chemotactic for human polymorphonuclear leucocytes. These data suggest a potential for complement activation in vivo by ingestion, inhalation, or injection of cereal grain products.

Notes: Ground whole rye and airborne rye dust of comparable size distribution were tested for their ability to activate the complement cascade via the alternative pathway. Precipitin-negative pooled normal human serum was incubated with increasing amounts of the two rye dusts. Electrophoresis of the resultant supernatant fluids demonstrated the conversion of the proactivator of the third component of complement to the gamma-migrating activator of the third component. This activation was completely prevented by pre-treating the serum with the chelator EDTA, while pre-treatment with EGTA allowed suboptimal arc conversion, strongly implying that complement was activated via the alternative pathway. Quantification of the supernatant fluids showed dose-dependent complement consumption as defined by both CH100 immunoditfusion and CH50 tube haemolytic techniques.Airborne rye dust showed a greater quantitative potential than ground whole rye for activating the alternative pathway. These results indicate the possibility of the direct action of airborne organic dusts on the induction of inflammatory sequelae in the lungs of both sensitized and unsensitized individuals.

Notes: Abstract. Family and twin studies have demonstrated a strong genetic component to the development of peak bone mass. Early fetal and infant environment has also been shown to influence bone mass through an effect on skeletal size and mineral content. We report a retrospective study that has examined whether early infant growth is regulated by genetic factors shown to be associated with bone mass. We have determined the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene alleles for 66 women (mean age 65.5 years) on whom detailed birth records were available. There was a statistically significant trend (P= 0.04) for VDR genotype against weight at the age of 1 year, with the ``tt'' homozygote group having 7% higher weight. We conclude that early fetal or infant environment may interact with an individual's underlying genotype to program early skeletal growth, and that this may track through later life to influence adult characteristics. Further prospective studies are required, however, to fully clarify the precise environmental and genetic mechanisms underlying these findings.

Notes: Summary Twenty-one patients with leukemia and lymphoma refractory to conventional therapy were treated with thymidine (dThd) at a dose of 75 g/m2/day for 48 h by continuous intravenous (IV) infusion, followed by cytosine arabinoside (ara-C) on an escalating dose schedule of 25–625 mg/m2/day for 48 h by continuous IV infusion. Toxicity included somnolence (1 patient), mucositis (2 patients), and myelosuppression (19 patients). One patient died prior to completion of therapy. Because of the patient population studied (mainly consisting of patients with leukemia rafractory to conventional therapy) and the prevalence of myelosuppression prior to therapy, a median toxic dose was not evaluable. Therapeutic responses included a partial remission in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) refractory to ara-C. An additional six patients with acute leukemia refractory to ara-C transiently cleared their peripheral blood of blasts, and a decrease in circulating blasts was noted in two other patients. Biochemical studies conducted on the peripheral blasts of two patients confirmed an enhancement by dThd of the incorporation of ara-C into the DNA of circulating blasts.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we construct the equilibrium states of Dyson's vector-valued hierarchical model with parameter $$c = \sqrt 2$$ at low temperatures and describe their large-scale limit. The analogous problems for $$\sqrt 2$$ 〈c〈2 and 1〈c〈 $$\sqrt 2$$ were solved in our papers [1] and [2]. In the present case the large-scale limit is similar to the case $$\sqrt 2$$ 〈c〈2, i.e. it is a Gaussian self-similar field with long-range dependence in the direction orthogonal to and a field consisting of independent Gaussian random variables in the direction parallel with the magnetization. The main difference between the two cases is that now the normalizing factor in the direction of the magnetization contains, beside the square-root of the volume, a logarithmic term too.

    Notes: Summary Let a stationary Gaussian sequence X n , n=... −1,0,1, ... and a real function H(x) be given. We define the sequences $$Y_n^N = \frac{1}{{A_N }} \cdot \sum\limits_{j = \left( {n - 1} \right)N}^{nN - 1} {H\left( {X_j } \right)}$$ ,n=... −1,0,1...; N=1,2, ... where A N are appropriate norming constants. We are interested in the limit behaviour as N→∞. The case when the correlation function r(n)=EX 0 X n tends slowly to 0 is investigated. In this situation the norming constants A〉 N tend to infinity more rapidly than the usual norming sequence A〉 N =√N. Also the limit may be a non-Gaussian process. The results are generalized to the case when the parameter-set is multi-dimensional.
