    Notes: Summary Post-traumatic vomiting was clinically analyzed. One hundred and forty seven patients with head injury came to our hospital consecutively from April 1991 to August 1991. Of 147 patients, 26 exhibited vomiting post-traumatically. The incidence of loss of consciousness, that of fractures on plain X-ray films, and that of traumatic intracranial lesions demonstrated on CT were compared between two patient groups, i.e., a group of patients with post-traumatic vomiting and another one without it. None of them were revealed to be significantly different between the two groups, respectively. It was concluded from the results that the existence of post-traumatic vomiting implied neither severe traumatic impact nor serious intracranial damage. The plausible mechanisms of post-traumatic vomiting are discussed, taking account of the statistical data on the patients' age, sites of impact, and past histories.

    Notes: Summary The role of superficial temporal artery -middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) anastomosis was investigated with an ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter in 3 patients with sphenoid ridge meningiomas and one with a parasellar malignant teratoma, all of which involved the intracranial internal carotid artery. The intraoperative Doppler flow study revealed a remarkable increase in flow volume of the STA after trial occlusion of the middle cerebral artery in one case and permanent occlusion in two cases. These results substantiate the effectiveness of STA-MCA anastomosis. We also discuss surgical and other contrivances for obtaining sufficient blood supply from this bypass to prevent cerebral ischaemia in the acute phase after elective or accidental occlusion of a major cerebral artery. This is the first report of STA-MCA anastomosis in cases with brain tumour.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine on nerve action potential and transmitter release in mouse neuroblastoma-glioma hybrid cells (NG108-15) and the frog neuromuscular junction were studied. Carbamazepine within a concentration range of 0.1–0.5 mmol/L reduced the peak height of the action potential of the NG108-15 cells, whereas the membrane potential and membrane resistance were unaffected. Voltage clamp revealed that the decrease in the action potential was due to the blockage of the Na+, delayed K+ and transient Ca2+ currents. Carbamazepine did not affect Ca2+-activated and A type K+ currents and long-lasting Ca2+ current. In the frog neuromuscular junction, carbamazepine decreased the mean quantal content by a parallel shift in the frequency augmentation–potentiation (FAP) relation. It is concluded that carbamazepine blocks the voltage-dependent Na+, delayed K+, and transient Ca2+ currents and quantal transmitter release through a decrease of nerve excitation.

    Notes: Abstract The axial deformation behaviour of arterial walls and their anisotropy were studied experimentally using abdominal aortas, common carotid arteries and femoral arteries obtained from mongrel dogs. These tubular specimens were stretched in the axial direction keeping the internal pressure at various levels. Main results obtained were: the strain rate dependency of axial mechanical behaviour is not observed in the range of 3×10−3 to 3×10−1 per second; mechanical properties of arteries in the axial direction are dependent on the internal pressure applied; in the lower stress range, arterial walls are more extensible in the circumferential direction than in the axial direction, and an apposite trend occurs in the higher stress range; mechanical properties of arterial walls in the axial direction are expressed by the constitutive equations that we proposed in a previous paper.

    Notes: Abstract Static mechanical behaviors of three different arterial walls were examined through changes in external radius due to distending pressure. In order to examine the distensibility of these vessels, distension ratio was defined as the ratio of eternal radius at each pressure to that at zero pressure. Linear relations were observed between the logarithmic pressure and the distension ration, and they were described by on exponential function. Two parameters used in this equation were related quantitatively to the area fraction of elastin or collagen component occupied in the cross section of wall. Stress-strain relation was then determined from their pressure-diameter data by using finite-deformation theory. An exponential function was established between tangential stress and tangenital strain. These results can be used to study the resistance of arterial walls to cardio-vascular disease.
