    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Le traitement orthopédique des scolioses a évolué de façon spectaculaire à partir des années 60 avec l'apparition des plâtres collés, du cadre de Cotrel et des corsets lyonnais en plexidur. Jadis “opprobre de l'orthopédie”, la scoliose idiopathique a vu progressivement son pronostic s'éclairer, au prix cependant d'un traitement contraignant et de longue durée. Il faut cependant savoir moduler le traitement en fonction de plusieurs paramètres : l'importance de la scoliose, la localisation de la courbure, l'âge osseux, l'âge d'état civil. Le cas idéal pour le traitement orthopédique est celui d'une scoliose lombaire ou thoraco-lombaire avec un test de RISSER initial inférieur à 2. Pour les courbures thoraciques, le traitement orthopédique n'est à poursuivre que si le gain angulaire reste supérieur à 30 % au long du traitement, sinon, il vaut mieux cesser le traitement orthopédique et indiquer la chirurgie.
    Notes: Summary The conservative treatment of scolioses has evolved in a spectacular way from the 60's onwards with the birth of glued plasters, the Cotrel frame and the lyonnais braces in plexidur. In the past “the disgrace of orthopaedics”, idiopathic scoliosis progressively saw its prognosis brighten up, at the cost nevertheless of a constraining and lengthy treatment. However, the treatment must be varied depending on several parameters: the importance of the scoliosis, the localization of the curvature, the bone age, the chronological age. The ideal case for the conservative treatment is that of a lumbar or thoracolumbar scoliosis with an initial Risser test inferior to 2. For thoracic curvatures, the conservative treatment is continued only if the angular gain remains superior to 30% during treatment, otherwise, it is better to stop the conservative treatment and recommend the surgery.

    Description / Table of Contents: Samenvatting Enige landrassen van winterrogge bezitten een goede aaltjes-resistentie, doch zijn te slap van stro en geven onvoldoende zaadopbrengst op gezond land of op percelen met een geringe aaltjesaantasting. Uit een kruising van de Ottersumse rogge met de Petkuser werd op de tot het Kweekbedrijf C.I.V. behorende Hoeve Heertveld te Veghel een roggeras gekweekt met goede aaltjesresistentie. Dit ras, de Heertvelder rogge, dat sedert 1953 op de Nederlandse rassenlijst geplaatst is, onderscheidt zich door vlugge en goede grondbedekking en opvallend stevig stro. Bij het onderzoek door het I.P.O. werd na kunstmatige infectie vastgesteld dat in de Heertvelderrogge 25% zwaar werd aangetast. In de praktijk toont Heertvelderrogge echter een goede resistentie, dank zij een goed herstelvermogen. Het Kweekbedrijf C.I.V. zet de selectie op aaltjes-resistentie en andere gewenste eigenschappen ook met ander materiaal voort en is thans zo ver gevorderd, dat een nieuw ras het opbrengstvermogen van de Petkuser benadert.
    Notes: Summary Some local varieties of winter rye possess a good eelworm-resistance but have too weak a straw and produce an insufficient quantity of seed on healthy soil or on fields which are slightly infested. On the farm Heertveld, belonging to the C.I.V. Breeding Station, a rye variety has been developed from a cross between Ottersum rye and Petkus winter rye, and it showed a good resistance to the stem eelworm (Ditylenchus dipsaci). The new variety which was included in the Dutch List of Varieties of 1953, distinguished itself by a rapid and good soil coverage and strikingly stiff straw. On investigation by the I.P.O. it was established (after artificial inoculation) that 25% of the plants of Heertveld rye were not affected, 50% were slightly damaged and 25% were heavily attacked. However, in the field it shows a good resistance, due to a good recovery. At the Breeding Station selection for eelworm resistance and also for other desirable features is continued and at present such progress has been made that the Heertveld rye now approaches the production capacity of Petkus.

    Description / Table of Contents: Samenvatting Systematisch kruisings- en selectieprogramma om Phytophthora resistentie met Bintje-kwaliteit en cultuurwaarde in een aardappelras te combineren. Getracht wordt een Bintje vervanger te vinden, welke onvatbaar is voor wratziekte en voldoende resistent van een selectie in najaarsteelt, terwijl door systematisch kruisen van zaailingen waartin Bintje bloed aanwezig is, wordt gestreefd naar het behoud van de Bintje kwaliteit.
    Notes: Abstract Attempts are being made to breed a variety which can replace the potato variety Bintje and is resistant to wart disease as well as sufficiently resistant to Phytophthora. In order to realize this both Solanum demissum and selection in autumn growing were used. Crosses of seedlings which possessed "Bintje blood" are performed to preserve the quality of Bintje.
