Notes: Summary The follow-up investigation of 8 cases of peripheral nerve injury 1 to 1 1/2 years after the graft of preserved homologous nerve grafts indicated that definite signs of restitution of the operated nerves could not be found in a single case.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Moberg's ninhydrin test should not be termed a sensitivity test but rather a function test of spontaneous sweat-gland activity. More exactly, it gives information concerning the functional efficiency of the distal sudorisecretory neuron that has its beginning in the sympathetic ganglia. The test can effectively supplement the diagnostic equipment of peripheral neurology: Only through severances of the peripheral sensitive nervous trunks can disorders of sweat-secretion be brought about, that correspond in their localisation to disorders of sensitivity. Root-lesions leave the spontaneous sweat-gland activity intact, as also do illnesses of the spinal cord (e. g. those leading to dissociated sensation). Conversely, disorders of the sweat-secretion where sensitivity remains intact are indicative of lesions of the sympathetic trunk, and on occasion of paravertebral tumors.

Notes: Summary Our recent experience stimulated a review of selective rhizotomies for the alleviation of localized pain. Three patients with postoperative neuralgia in the inguinal region and two with neoplastic root compression were treated. Results were good and long-lasting in two cases, moderate in two and poor in one case. The relief appeared to be better, the more clearly the pain was localized. In lesions distal to the spinal root it is necessary to undertake selective paravertebral root blocks with local anaesthetics. Experimental data are discussed that help in an understanding of pain recurrence after rhizotomy.
