    Notes: Summary Three strains of chick embryo adapted canine distemper virus (Lederle, Wisconsin, and Onderstepoort strains) and chick embryo adapted LA strain of rinderpest virus were easily adapted to an established line of African green monkey kidney cells (Vero cells), which has been routinely employed for the titration of measles virus. By using these Vero cell adapted strains of canine distemper and rinderpest viruses, techniques of infectivity titration and virus neutralization in Vero cells were established. Comparative studies of cytopathology and growth characteristics of canine distemper, rinderpest, and measles viruses indicated that the behavior of the three viruses in Vero cells is almost the same. The Vero cell system was suggested as a suitable host for the comparative study of the serologic and biologic relationships among measles, canine distemper, and rinderpest viruses.

    Notes: Summary Sera collected from three patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) at various stages of the disease were demonstrated to contain remarkably high levels of neutralizing antibody to canine distemper virus in proportion to the well known high antibody titers against measles virus. In contrast, neutralizing antibody to canine distemper virus was detected only at low titer in sera of convalescents from natural measles, or of measles with or without atypical measles symptom following vaccination, as well as in sera of children vaccinated with live or killed measles vaccine. Anti-measles sera prepared in various experimental animals also contained neutralizing antibody to canine distemper virus only at low titer. The significance of these findings is discussed in relevance to the possible involvement of canine distemper virus in the pathogenesis of SSPE.

    Notes: Summary The development of specific antigens of measles, canine distemper and rinderpest viruses in Vero cells was examined by fluorescent antibody (FA) techniques. Intracellular and extracellular virus antigens were demonstrated by FA staining of fixed cells and unfixed living cells, respectively. All the three viruses showed the same pattern of development of specific antigens in the same host cells. Both V and S antigens were considered to be synthesized exclusively in the cytoplasm. The antigenic correlation among the three viruses was also studied by cross FA staining of both fixed and unfixed samples. A significant correlation among them was more clearly demonstrated by FA technique than in virus neutralization, HI, or CF tests. The similarity in the structures of V antigens as well as S antigens among the three viruses is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Persistent infection of rinderpest virus in Vero cells was established and designated as VRP34. Virus specific antigens were present in nearly 100 per cent of the cells. Cytopathic effect (CPE) consisting of syncytium formation and vacuolation is a unique feature of VRP34. Spontaneously released virus mainly consisted of non-temperature-sensitive virus populations and was able to initiate persistent infection in both normal Vero and RK13 cells. The results indicate that mutation of virus is responsible for the establishment of persistent infection.

    Notes: Summary Decrease in the susceptibility of embryonic chick neural retina cultures to the multiplication of various viruses was observed with increasing age of the embryo. In contrast the retinal cells supported the multiplication of Sindbis virus irrespective of the age when they were infected with the viral RNA. These results suggest that the restricted multiplication of the viruses observed is due to the modulated inability of the cell to process the adsorbed viruses for subsequent replication.

    Notes: Summary Growth of two measles virus strains, the TYCSA and CAM, was compared in three continuous cell lines derived from the nervous tissues, human neuroblastoma IMR-32, human glioma 118MGC, and rat glioma C-6. The two human neural cells were shown to support the growth of both measles virus strains as efficiently as in the non-neural Vero cells. Different types of cytopathic effect (CPE) between the two virus strains were noticed in IMR-32 cells; the CAM strain induced strand-forming type CPE and the TYCSA strain giant-cell type CPE. As a difference of growth pattern between IMR-32 and 118MGC cells, virus antigen was demonstrated in both the nucleus and cytoplasm of 118MGC cells whereas virus antigen was present only in the cytoplasm of IMR-32 cells. In contrast to the productive infection in human neural cells, growth of both virus strains was restricted in rat glioma C-6 cells without showing CPE although the prolonged presence of virus antigens was demonstrated by the immunofluorescent technique.
