    Notes: We have measured very low microwave losses in microstrip resonators produced in a newly developed process which deposits high-temperature Er-Ba-Cu-O superconducting films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on both sides of a LaAlO3 substrate. These in situ films have critical temperatures of 92 K. High Tc superconductor (HTS) linear microstrip resonators demonstrated Q's of 3500 at 10 GHz and 4.2 K, corresponding to surface resistances less than 330 μΩ, which is 45 times better than measured silver resoantors. HTS meanderline resonators with a fundamental frequency of 1.3 GHz have Q's of 9600 at 4.2 K. Identical silver meanderline circuits have 300 times more surface resistance than HTS circuits.

    Notes: Abstract Ionospheric E-region observations from Boulder (40.0 N, 105.3 W), Grand Bahama (26.6 N, 78.2 W), Mexico City (19.3 N, 99.2 W), Vandenberg (35.6 N, 120.6 W), and Wallops Island (37.9 N, 75.5 W) during the total solar eclipse of 7 March, 1970 are used for reconstructing the distribution of the ionizing XUV radiation over the solar disk. The derived solar image compares reasonably well with the EUV and X-ray pictures of the Sun obtained from rockets.

    Notes: Abstract Regeneration of gastric mucosa damaged by aspirin was studied in 6-week-old rats, using histologic and autoradiographic technics. Aspirin (120 mg/kg) was given by esophageal intubation either in a single dose or each day for 14 days. After a single dose, two types of lesion were observed in the mucosa of the body of the stomach: (a) superficial erosions which were already present after 30 minutes and which completely healed within 24 hours; (b) deeper erosions, reaching maximal numbers at 4 hours, which healed slowly with a median disappearance time of 5 days and which were associated with a focal increase in3H-thymidine-labeled cells. The peak increase in labeling occurred between 16 and 48 hours. The pattern and rate of healing was not altered by repeated daily aspirin. The investigation has demonstrated slow healing of deep mucosal erosions caused by aspirin; the slow healing can be explained by destruction of the progenitor zone by the initial injury.

    Notes: Summary The gastric mucosa of a reptile, the lizard Tiliqua scincoides, has been examined by light and electron microscopy. The gastric pits lead into glands that are extensively coiled in the proximal stomach but become progressively shorter and straighter in the distal stomach. The following epithelial cell types have been identified: (i) Surface mucous cells (SMC) line the entire lumenal surface as well as the pits. They contain mucus granules that stain with periodic acid-Schiff and, like the granules of mammalian SMC, commonly contain an electron dense core that appears not to be mucus (periodic acid-chromic acid-silver methenamine nonreactive). (ii) Glandular mucous cells are present in glands throughout the mucosa. They are probably homologous with the mucous neck and antral gland cells of mammals; like SMC their mucus granules contain nonglycoprotein cores. (iii) Oxynticopeptic cells (OPC) are the predominant cell type in the proximal glands but become infrequent distally. Their fine structure resembles that of OPC in other nonmammalian vertebrates, with features like those of both parietal cells and zymogen cells of mammals, (iv) Endocrine cells of three different types have been identified. Two of these show close similarities to the EC and ECL cells of mammals.

    Notes: Commercial thermoplastic polyurethanes have been melt blended on a standard laboratory extruder with low levels of commercial poly(dimethyl siloxane) fluid. The resultant polyurethanes show improvements in wear resistance of up to 25% (c.f. virgin polyurethane) for an optimal PDMS concentration of 1.5-2.0%, beyond which the properties diminish rapidly. Unexpectedly, the mechanical properties of the blends (as measured by an Instron tensile testing machine) have been even more significantly enhanced, by up to 40% for tensile strength and 50% for elongation to break. Surface studies of the blends are also reported for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angles and coefficient of friction (CoF). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
