The Influence of Alkali Contamination on the Surface Chemical Properties of Amorphous Al2O3-SiO2 CatalystsIn order to determine the mode of interaction of alkali with acid Al2O3-SiO2 catalysts, such catalysts containing 5 to 35wt.-% Al2O3 were contaminated by increasing amounts of sodium ethylate from non-aqueous solution. The determination of the surface chemical properties was carried out by the following methods: Titration with potassium methylate, high temperature chemisorption of ammonia by means of two methods, D2O exchange, desorption Spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and ESR Spectroscopy by adsorption of molecules capable of forming radicals. It was established that at the surface there are strongly acid BRÖNSTED centres, less strongly acid LEWIS and BRÖNSTED centres, and very weakly acid OH groups. When added from non-aqueous solution with increasing concentration, alkali preferentially contaminates strongly acid BRÖNSTED centres, thereafter acid LEWIS and BRÖNSTED centres simultaneously, but only at a high alkali concentration it does contaminate the very weakly acid surface hydroxide groups.
Notes:
