Notes:
Summary The occurence, characteristics and distribution of the so-called “polygonal cells” in the corneal epithelium were studied by means of silver impregnation methods, vital staining, common staining methods, and Dopa-reaction. Corneas of adult cows, rabbits, rats, and mice as well as embryonic corneas of man, fowl, rabbit, and rat were used. The results are as follows: 1. Besides the epithelial cells in the strict sense the corneal epithelium of the animals studied contains cells which are selectively blackened by silver impregnation. These cells correspond to the “polygonal cells” of Japanese authors. Besides the methods hitherto used silver impregnations after Abraham, Jabonero and del Rio Hortega are suitable as well for identification. 2. The “polygonal cells” are polymorphous, possess short processes and are chiefly found in the basal layers of the corneal epithelium. They are situated solitarily or arranged to cords between groups of epithelial cells in the strict sense. Their arrangement may be compared with a threedimensional lattice the gaps of which are filled by not argyrophil epithelial cells. 3. Differences of shape or arrangement between the “polygonal cells” of the corneal epithelium of cows, rabbits, rats and mice are apparently not fundamental. 4. The percentage of “polygonal cells” in the basal layer of the corneal epithelium in cows is 5.6–9.6. 546–978 “polygonal cells” were found within 1 mm2. They are most numerous near the limbus corneae. The proportion of frequencies of “polygonal cells” within the peripheral, intermediate and central zones of the cornea is about 5∶3∶3. 5. The “polygonal cells” are transiently stainable by subepithelial injection of brillant cresyl blue into the living cornea. In the main the staining result corresponds to the effects of silver impregnation. 6. All efforts to find Dopa-positive “polygonal cells” in fetal or embryonic corneas of man, fowl, rabbit, and rat were in vain. The results and the informations found in the literature lead to the following conclusions: There is no doubt, that the cells described as “polygonal cells” or “white melanocytes” by Japanese authors are a regular constituent of the corneal epithelium in vertebrates. They are probably cells of the epithelial type of a certain function or in a special functional resp. developmental state. In spite of the abundance of informations available the classical problem of cell duality in the corneal epithelium needs further investigation.
