Description / Table of Contents: Summary A phenol water extract of ORh-positive erythrocytes prepared at 66–68°C inhinits the hemagglutination of ORh-positive erythrocytes by incomplete human Rh-antibodies. The active component of this extract is thermostable, hardly soluble in water, but casily soluble in diluted hydrochloric acid. It is not dialysable and not electrodialysable. Periodate counteracts the inhibitory action of the hardly soluble component of the extract. Acid hydrolysis, however, produces no loss of activity.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary According to the results of our experiments the mortality after injection of extracts of burned skin is due to their bacterial contamination. Mice inoculated with extracts of burned skin from germfree rats survive, whereas extracts of burned skin from conventional rats induce a high mortality rate.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Endotoxin from gram-negative bacteria causes severe alterations in the microcirculation. After degranulation of tissue mast-cells the bloodflow begins to slow down, the plasticity of circulating red and white cells is changed, adherence of the granulocytes to the wall occurs. Increased volume of endothelial cells and pericytes is followed by narrowing of the vascular lumen and enhanced permeability and microbleeding. Aggregates of thrombocytes and microthrombi are formed, prestasis and stasis is developed. After pretreatment of the experimental animals with a Glucofuranosid-derivate the microcirculation is protected against the described damage.

Notes: Summary This study characterized acute peritonitis and chronic abscess formation resulting from experimental mixed anaerobic infection withBacteroides melaninogenicus andFusobacterium necrophorum. At intervals after infection liver and spleen samples were obtained, fixed, and processed for histological examination. An acute to chronic infection progressed in mice infected with this mixture of anaerobic bacteria, whereas, no infection resulted when either organism was injected alone. Acute inflammatory cell infiltrates were noted in tissue samples at 12 h postinfection. Small, discrete areas of liver cell necrosis with neutrophilic infiltrates were observed as early as 24 h. By 48 h after infection the liver parenchyma was infiltrated with both acute and chronic inflammatory cells, with moderate to severe hepatocyte degeneration recognized at 72 h. Large intrahepatic abscesses were present in the subphrenic (upper lobe) area 2 to 6 weeks after experimental infection.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Endotoxins of gramnegative bacteria (E. coli, B. abortus, B. melitensis and H. influenzae) increase the histamine effect on the smooth uterine muscle up to 900% in 109 of 125 cases. The effect can also be observed on the blood vessels of the rabbit ear. This mechanism might play a role in all phenonema in which endotoxin and histamin is involved, for example in septic and traumatic shock and the Shwartzman reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By Scanning Electron Microscopy the terminal bloodflow of the hamster cheek pouch and the rabbit mesenterium was studied for 50 minutes after intravenous injection of endotoxin. The resulting findings were compared with vitalmicroscopic observed changes of the microcirculation. Caused by endotoxin the surface of the cells especially of the erythrocytes undergo considerable deformations as already known from the vitalmicroscopic studies. Aggregation of platelets, which are formed in the terminal blood flow after application of endotoxin were recognized as irreversible aggregates (thrombus) of platelets by means of the Stereoscan-technique. Fibrin and platelets were identified in aggregates of erythrocytes which often appear disseminate in many of the small vessels adhaering to the wall.
