Description / Table of Contents:
Diisocyanates react with diepoxides to yield poly-2-oxazolidinones. The reaction may be carried out in polar solvents such as hexamethyl phosphoric triamide. Light coloured products with relatively low melting points in the range between 80 and 100°C soluble in dimethylformamide are formed from aliphatic diisocyanates. Aromatic diisocyanates yield higher melting (210-230°C) polymers depending on the structure of the diepoxides, eventually also dark, unsoluble and not melting polymers, possible formed by side reactions with the solvent. By using low melting monoxazolidinones as solvent no such side reaction is encountered.Thermal stability of the prepared mono-, bis-, and poly-2-oxazolidinones has been examined thermoanalytically. Thermal degradation starts between 250 and 340°C initiated by split-off of carbon dioxide; no simple correlation between chemical structure and thermal stability could be established.
Notes:
