    Notes: Abstract To understand how regeneration in corals may be affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the process of repair of experimentally induced tissue lesions was investigated in the solitary scleractinian coral Fungia granulosa. Three lesion sizes were inflicted in situ on large, sexually mature individuals (〉5.5 cm diameter) and in small sexually immature (〈5.0 cm) individuals. Repair was monitored using photography and computerized image analysis. This procedure was carried out in fall (September to November; post-reproductive months), and repeated with a new set of corals in spring (March to May; gametogenic months). Reproductive effort was investigated histologically 1 to 2 months following lesion infliction. In field experiments, there was a significant difference in percent of tissue coverage 8 weeks after lesion infliction between spring and fall for all lesion sizes in large corals. During the fall, all lesion sizes in large corals were repaired within 8 weeks. Large lesions in small corals did not undergo repair regardless of season. During the spring, none of the corals underwent complete repair regardless of coral size, and many of the small corals died. In laboratory experiments, 83.3% of the corals kept at 25 °C and 16.7% of those kept at 21 °C underwent repair during the fall. None of the corals maintained at 21 °C and only 16.7% of those corals maintained at 25 °C underwent complete repair during spring. Though both fecundity and tissue regeneration were significantly reduced, gametogenesis continued in corals that had previously undergone experimental injury. These results indicate that in fungiid corals, regeneration is affected by intrinsic factors such as size and reproductive state as well as by environmental factors such as ambient water temperatures. Moreover, it is possible that, following injury, energetic resources are diverted from repair towards the maintenance of reproductive effort.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine analytische und experimentelle Untersuchung einer Zweiphaseneintrittströmung mit plötzlicher Verdampfung in einem Rohr mit scharfem Eintritt wird beschrieben. Dabei wird der Einfluß sinusförmiger Schwingungen berücksichtigt. Unter der Annahme einer freien Strömung werden die Bedingungen für das Auftreten der Drosselung in einer Zweiphasen-Einkomponentenströmung abgeleitet. Drei Regime in dieser Strömung mit plötzlicher Verdampfung werden unterschieden. Diese sind: der ebene Strahl, die eindimensionale, homogene Zweiphasenströmung und die Flüssigkeitsströmung. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen wird eine Beziehung für den geringsten Staudruckverlust bei Drosselung hergeleitet. Ein gerader Kondensationsstoß wurde zwischen dem Zweiphasen- und dem Einphasengebiet beobachtet. Der Ort des Stoßes als Funktion des Staudruckverlustes im Rohr konnte berechnet werden. Die analytischen Ergebnisse wurden experimentell bestätigt.
    Notes: Abstract An analytical and experimental investigation including vibratory effects of flashing flow in a tube with a sharp edged entrance is presented. A free streamline flow model is applied to predict choking in single-component two-phase flow. By identifying three separate regimes (i.e. jet flow, two-phase homogeneous flow, and single-phase liquid flow) in the flashing flow system, an expression is obtained for the prediction of the minimum stagnation pressure loss under choked flow conditions. A normal shock located between the flashing two-phase mixture and the single-phase liquid was experimentally observed. The location of the shock is predicted as a function of the stagnation pressure drop across the tube. The analytical predictions are verified by experimental data.

    Notes: Summary Mid- and long term stability is still the major challenge in total hip replacement (THR). A consecutive series of cemented 250 cases and of uncemented 250 cases was analyzed in a prospective follow-up study. The femoral component of the BiCONTACT hip stem system with the same design for cemented and uncemented implantation was used. While the cemented stems had a smooth surface, the cementless implants were proximally coated with a microporous titanium plasmaspray (Plasmapore®). Follow-up time averaged 7 years for cemented and 6.5 years for uncemented THRs. Follow-up rate was 88.7% in cases treated with cemented stems and 93.1% in cases treated with an uncemented stem. The rate of aseptic loosening was 1.2% for the cemented version and 0.4% for the uncemented one. Radiological loosening could be observed in another 1.2% of the cemented stems but was not found in the uncemented cases. Our data suggest excellent midterm stability of both the cemented and the uncemented version of the BiCONTACT hip stem system. Early aseptic loosening especially of the cemented titanium alloy straight stem has not occurred in our series as reported recently. The prosthesis design and follow-up time may therefore play an important role. The long-term results for both cemented and uncemented BiCONTACT prostheses of our series are still to be evaluated.
