Notes: Summary Chronic pain on the ventral surface of the scrotum and the proximal ventro-medial surface of the thigh especially in athletes has been diagnosed in various ways; recently, in Europe the concept of “sports hernia” has been advocated. However, since few reports discuss the detailed course of the nerves in association with the pain, we examined the cutaneous branches in the inguinal region in 54 halves of 27 adult male cadavers. From our results, in addition to the cutaneous branches from the ilioinguinal n. (in 49 of 54: 90.7%), cutaneous branches originating from the genital branches of the genitofemoral nerve were found in the inguinal region in 19 of 54 halves (35.2%). In 7 cases (in 7 of 54: 13.0%) the genital branch and the ilioinguinal nerve united in the inguinal canal. In 6 cases the genital branch pierced the inguinal lig. to enter the inguinal canal, and in three cases the genital branch pierced the border between the ligament and the aponeurosis of the obliquus externus m. to be distributed to the inguinal region. Therefore, the courses of the genital branches vary considerably, and may have a very important role in chronic groin pain produced by groin hernia. In addition, entrapment by the ligament may be a reasonable candidate for the cause of chronic groin pain.

Notes: Abstract: Epimeric conversion of 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-d-glucose (FDG) to its 2-epimer 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-d-mannose (FDM) proved by 19F NMR has been shown to reflect the brain activity. To examine the feasibility of FDG as a new NMR probe for in vivo functional monitoring, we studied here the fundamental NMR properties of metabolites, spectral assignments, and reliability of NMR quantification. Metabolites confirmed in brain besides FDM-6-phosphate were as follows: FDG-1-phosphate, FDG-1,6-bisphosphate, FDM-1-phosphate, FDM-1,6-bisphosphate, and FDG and FDM derivatives of nucleotide diphosphate. NMR quantification of these metabolites was evaluated in comparison with the method of 18F-labeled FDG. In the NMR functional study using FDG, where a high dose is inevitable, the dose dependence of uptake was investigated. FDG uptake in mouse brain was shown to be in the range of interpretation using the biochemical parameters of enzymes for glucose uptake as long as a dose of 〈200 mg/kg was used.

Notes: Abstract: We have carried out 115In nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements in CeRhIn5. At ambient pressure, CeRhIn5 undergoes an antiferromagnetic AF phase transition at K. The 115In NQR spectrum has shown the appearance of a small internal field in the direction perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis. With application of a hydrostatic pressure, the AF state is suppressed and the superconductivity appears just above the critical pressure (P = 17 kbar). The nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 of 115In measured at P = 27 kbar indicates the occurrence of the superconductivity in the nearly AF region. In the superconducting state, 1/T1 has no Hebel-Slichter coherence peak just below of 2 K and has a power law T-dependence (T3) down to 300 mK. This is consistent with anisotropic superconductivity, with line nodes in the superconducting energy gap: non-s-wave superconductivity occurs in CeRhIn5.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry was applied to the screening of aquatic environments for herbicides. The standard field desorption mass spectra of these compounds are also presented. The spectra of standard herbicides showed molecular and isotope ions, but fragment ions were not observed. The molecular ion was observed as the base peak. The spectra of the extracts of water showed positive responses at m/z 257 and m/z 344 corresponding to molecular ions of benthiocarb and oxadiazon. These herbicides were simultaneously confirmed when present in mixtures.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry is applied to the positive identification of organochlorine insecticides and their related compounds residing in field soil environment. Additionally, standard field desorption mass spectra of these compounds are presented. Soil samples were collected in lettuce and spinach fields, and insecticides were extracted, cleaned up, and separated with thin-layer chromatography. Residue levels were measured by injecting the extract into a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. Residues of p,p′-DDT and dieldrin in field soil samples were clearly identified by field desorption mass spectrometry using the emitter dipping method. Moreover, mixed residues of these insecticides were simultaneously confirmed. However, residues of insecticides and their related compounds other than p,p′-DDT and dieldrin could not be characterized. All spectra of standard showed prominent ions, and the ion was the base peak in all spectra obtained.
