Notes: Photoluminescence measurements were carried out in order to investigate the dependence of the optical properties of p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te single crystals on hydrogen passivation conditions. After the p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te was annealed at 500 °C in a Cd atmosphere for 5 h, the luminescence due to the recombination of the electrons in the conduction band with acceptors (eA°) and to the donor–acceptor pair (DAP) transitions disappeared. After the p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te was hydrogenated, the intensity of the exciton luminescence increased so that the (eA°) and DAP peaks related to the Cd vacancies disappeared, and the defect band in the low energy range between 1.4 and 1.5 eV also vanished. These results indicate that hydrogen atoms passivated not only shallow donors but also deep acceptor impurities and that the hydrogen atoms were separated from the hydrogenated samples at 400 °C due to their thermal energy.

Notes: Photoluminescence measurements were carried out to investigate the dependence of the optical properties of p-CdTe and p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te on various relative concentrations of bromine in a mixture of methanol and bromine. As the bromine concentration increased, the intensity of the luminescence increased; additionally, an exciton bound to a neutral acceptor (A°X) peak at 1.588 eV in p-CdTe was resolved into an exciton bound to neutral donor (D°X) peak at 1.592 eV and an A°X peak. The mixed bands of the 1.574 and 1.546 eV peaks were well resolved by using an etching bromine concentration of 2%; in particular, the intensities of the D°X and 1.574 eV peaks increased as much as five and seven times, respectively. The intensity of the peak at 1.48 eV related to defects also increased. The intensity of A°X at 1.609 eV in p-Cd0.96Zn0.04Te changed slightly with the bromine concentration. The intensities of the luminescence peaks due to the recombination of the electrons in conduction band with acceptors and to the defect relation did not vary. These results indicated that the number of Cd vacancies could be reduced due to the addition of Zn.

Notes: We have developed a novel microchannel plate (MCP) by introducing new materials and process technologies. The key features of our MCP are summarized as follows: (i) bulk alumina as a substrate, (ii) the channel location defined by a programmed-hole puncher, (iii) thin film deposition by electroless plating and/or sol–gel process, and (iv) an easy fabrication process suitable for mass production and a large-sized MCP. The characteristics of the resulting MCP have been evaluated with a high input current source such as a continuous electron beam from an electron gun and Spindt-type field emitters to obtain information on electron multiplication. In the case of a 0.28 μA incident beam, the output current enhances ∼170 times, which is equal to 1% of the total bias current of the MCP at a given bias voltage of 2600 V. When we insert a MCP between the cathode and the anode of a field emission display panel, the brightness of luminescent light increases 3–4 times by multiplying the emitted electrons through pore arrays of a MCP. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The efficiency of a field emission display was improved significantly with a newly developed microchannel plate. The key features of this unit and its fabrication are summarized as follows: (a) bulk alumina is used as a substrate material, (b) channel location is defined by a programed-hole puncher, and (c) thin film deposition is conducted by electroless plating followed by a sol–gel process. With the microchannel plate between the cathode and the anode of a field emission display, the brightness of luminescent light increases three- to fourfold by electron multiplication through an array of pores in the device. In addition, the fabricated microchannel plate prevents spreading of electrons emitted from the cathode tips, thus improving both display resolution and picture quality. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A triode-type field emission display has been fabricated using carbon nanotube emitters. Purified single walled carbon nanotubes were selectively deposited onto a cathode electrode in a triode-type structure by an electrophoresis. Emission current was modulated with gate potentials of 100–300 V. A high brightness of 1000 cd/m2 with uniform emission was obtained at 900 V at the anode and 200 V at the gate. The fluctuation of emission current was found to be less than 5% in a fully sealed field emission display. Selective deposition of carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis shows high feasibility for triode-type field emission displays. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A fully sealed field-emission display 4.5 in. in size has been fabricated using single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT)-organic binders. The fabricated displays were fully scalable at low temperature, below 415 °C, and CNTs were vertically aligned using paste squeeze and surface rubbing techniques. The turn-on fields of 1 V/μm and field emission current of 1.5 mA at 3 V/μm (J=90 μA/cm2) were observed. Brightness of 1800 cd/m2 at 3.7 V/μm was observed on the entire area of a 4.5 in. panel from the green phosphor-indium–tin–oxide glass. The fluctuation of the current was found to be about 7% over a 4.5 in. cathode area. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background : Helicobacter pylori infection elicits persistent neutrophil infiltration in gastric mucosa. The expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inhibition of apoptosis in the neutrophils could contribute to the pathogenesis of H. pylori infection. Rebamipide, a mucosal protective and ulcer-healing drug, has been known to inhibit neutrophil activation.Aim : To evaluate the effect of rebamipide on the neutrophils activated by H. pylori water-soluble proteins. Methods : After neutrophils were stimulated with H. pylori water extract (HPWE) or pre-treated with rebamipide, the expression of COX-2 mRNA and protein was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Prostaglandin (PG) E2 synthesis was determined by radioimmunoassay. Neutrophil apoptosis was evaluated by cytosolic oligonucleosome-bound DNA ELISA and caspase-3 activity was measured by the detection of p-nitroanilide after cleavage from labelled substrate. Results : Stimulation with HPWE up-regulated COX-2 expression and PGE2 secretion, and inhibited neutrophil apoptosis. Rebamipide suppressed PGE2 secretion from neutrophils dose-dependently. Rebamipide, however, did not affect neutrophil apoptosis and caspase-3 activity. Conclusions : Rebamipide effectively suppressed PGE2 secretion from neutrophils activated by H. pylori water-soluble proteins. This is another possible mechanism of gastric mucosal protection by rebamipide.
