    Notes: Recent measurements of the two-dimensional (2-D) spatial profiles of divertor plasma density, temperature, and emissivity in the DIII-D tokamak [J. Luxon et al., in Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), p. 159] under highly radiating conditions are presented. Data are obtained using a divertor Thomson scattering system and other diagnostics optimized for measuring the high electron densities and low temperatures in these detached divertor plasmas (ne≤1021 m−3, 0.5 eV≤Te). D2 gas injection in the divertor increases the plasma radiation and lowers Te to less than 2 eV in most of the divertor volume. Modeling shows that this temperature is low enough to allow ion–neutral collisions, charge exchange, and volume recombination to play significant roles in reducing the plasma pressure along the magnetic separatrix by a factor of 3–5, consistent with the measurements. Absolutely calibrated vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy and 2-D images of impurity emission show that carbon radiation near the X-point, and deuterium radiation near the target plates contribute to the reduction in Te. Uniformity of radiated power (Prad) (within a factor of 2) along the outer divertor leg, with peak heat flux on the divertor target reduced fourfold, was obtained. A comparison with 2-D fluid simulations shows good agreement when physical sputtering and an ad hoc chemical sputtering source (0.5%) from the private flux region surface are used. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The introduction of a divertor Thomson scattering system in DIII-D [J. Luxon et al., International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1986), p. 159] has enabled accurate determination of the plasma properties in the divertor region. Two plasma regimes are identified: detached and attached. The electron temperature in the detached regime is about 2 eV, much lower than 5–10 eV determined earlier. Fluid models of the DIII-D scrape-off layer plasma successfully reproduce many of the features of these two regimes, including the boundaries for transition between them. Detailed comparison between the results obtained from the fluid models and experiment suggest the models underestimate the spatial extent of the low-temperature region associated with the detached plasma mode. Low-temperature atomic physics processes that are not included in the present models may account for this discrepancy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments to explore the long-time evolution of noninductive, high βp plasmas in the DIII-D tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159], have identified a new, quiescent, high performance regime. The experiments were carried out at low current (400–800 kA) with medium power neutral beam injection (3–10 MW). This regime is characterized by high q0 ((approximately-greater-than)2) and moderate li(∼1.3). It is reached by slow relaxation of the current profile, on the resistive time scale. As the profiles relax, q0 rises and li falls. When q0 goes above 2 (approximately), magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity disappears, and the stored energy rises. Most dramatic is the strong peaking of the central density, which increases by as much as a factor of 2. The improved central confinement appears similar to the PEP/reversed central shear/second stable core modes seen in tokamak experiments, but in this case without external intervention or transient excitation. At high current, a similar, but slower relaxation is seen. Also notable in connection with these discharges is the behavior of the edge and scrape-off layer (SOL). The edge localized modes (ELM's) as seen previously, are small and very rapid (to 1 kHz). The SOL exhibits high density (≥1×1019 m−3), which shows little or no falloff with radius. Also the power deposition at the divertor surface is very broad, up to four times the width usually seen. This regime is of particular interest for the development of steady-state tokamak operating scenarios, for the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX), and following reactors.

    Notes: We describe the base line design for the wiggler to be used in conjunction with the Experimental Test Accelerator-II (ETA-II) to produce high-power microwave radiation in the Intense Microwave Prototype (IMP) free-electron laser experiment. This design produces negligible noise growth for spontaneous noise sources as large as 20 dB above shot noise, and thus corrects the defects present in earlier iterations of the design, which resulted in diminished gain at the signal frequency because of space-charge effects as well as enhanced spontaneous noise growth at frequencies lower than the signal frequency. In addition, more realistic engineering design constraints on the waveguide size and the wiggler gap spacing have been set by the waveguide wall loading and the electron beam fill factor and have been incorporated in the final base line design. The design assumes that the ETA-II accelerator will supply an electron beam with an energy of 10 MeV, a current of 3 kA, and a brightness of 1.0×108 A/(m rad)2. With this beam and 500 W of input power at a frequency of 250 GHz, the peak output TE01 power predicted by the simulation codes, for a rectangular waveguide of dimensions 3.5×3.0 cm2, is in excess of 12 GW, corresponding to an extraction efficiency of 44%. The wiggler has an overall length of 5.5 m and a period of 10 cm. It consists of a 2-m untapered section at a magnetic field of about 4.3 kG followed by a 3.5-m tapered section with magnetic field ranging from a peak value of 4.5 kG to a minimum of 390 G. The growth of the beam linear fill factor to about 50% sets the lower limit of the magnetic field strength in the tapered wiggler region. A nonsteering, nondisplacing binomial winding pattern has been incorporated into the wiggler profile. The base line design is a 2(1331) pattern spanning six magnet poles, giving an inherent tapering resolution of 30 cm.

    Notes: Neutral molecular densities just outside the plasma edge are measured at 11 axial locations in tandem mirror experiment-upgrade (TMX-U). These densities are time dependent and vary greatly with different modes of TMX-U plasma operation. The densities are low in the ion-cyclotron resonance heated central cell because of plasma pumping. The density is high in the plug near the sloshing-ion turning point. These densities are measured with a combination of new retractable, and fixed, magnetically unshielded Bayard–Alpert gauges that can be oriented to provide calibrated operation in the high (7 kG) TMX-U magnetic fields. The role of the neutral density in simultaneously fueling and charge exchanging away the plug density is modeled using smoke, a Fokke–Planck code.

    Notes: Whistler mode electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) has been performed simultaneously with whistler mode electron-cyclotron emission measurements on an axisymmetric magnetic mirror plasma. Results presented include a study of the early plasma startup phase and two instability phases, one believed to be caused by a whistler instability and another by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flute instability. Enhanced microwave emission at frequencies below the midplane electron-cyclotron frequency has been correlated with enhanced electron endloss during the whistler instability. Cyclotron emission spectra during the startup phase match predictions for a "sloshing electron'' type distribution based on numerical modeling. This distribution also agrees with anisotropic distributions resulting from electron-cyclotron heating as predicted by Fokker–Planck computer simulations. Experimentally measured heating rates show good agreement with simplified analytical models based on stochastic heating.

    Notes: Abstract. Spatial averaging of data before or after modelling has important implications for large area land evaluation studies. Two procedures are evaluated for the spatial averaging of weather and soil moisture data before and after modelling (procedures A and B, respectively). The Thiessen polygon weighting technique is applied to a network of weather stations to derive daily weather values for the period 1955 to 1985 for 12 selected Agroecological Resource Areas (ARAs) on the Canadian prairies. These values are used in the model for procedure A. The components of the soil moisture balance for spring wheat are estimated with a budgeting model, assuming wheat is grown continuously for 30 years on soils with available water-holding capacities (AWCs) of 150 and 250 mm. In procedure B, the data from individual stations are used as input to the model and the same Thiessen polygon weighting coefficients are applied to the output variables. A comparison of the two procedures shows no significant difference for temperature-related variables such as frost dates, harvest date and cumulative potential evapotranspiration. The differences for moisture-related variables (soil moisture content at sowing, cumulative actual evapotranspiration, runoff and deep drainage) are often statistically significant, but the absolute differences are less than 10 mm at probability levels ranging from 10 to 90%. For many practical applications the two procedures give similar results.
