Notes: Abstract An improved method for separation and quantitative analysis of ceramic particles in aluminiumceramic mixture and cast materials is given. The mixture containing H2SO4, HNO3 and HCI has been found to be most efficient in the separation process. Mixtures containing other acids have been shown to be unsuitable. Optical and scanning electron micrographs of acid-treated aluminium-graphite and talc samples are presented.

Notes: Abstract Thermal treatment of rice husk has been conducted up to 1000° C in air, oxygen, argon and non-oxidizing atmospheres. Chemical treatments consisted of HCI, H2SO4, HNO3, NaOH and NH4OH. Purity, particle size distribution and SEM micrographs of chemically treated samples are presented. Carbon and SiO2 contents in rice husk, coked at different temperatures and time, have been determined to show that a C : SiO2 ratio of 2:1, required for the production of solar grade silicon, can be achieved at low temperature. SiO2 of 99% purity can be obtained by acid leaching. The results have been interpreted in terms of two types of bonding of silicon, a rigid structural framework, and selective sites for the preferential attack of acid and alkali in rice husk.

Notes: Abstract Consequent to the promising results reported with 99mTc(V)-DMSA for imaging certain types of soft tissue tumors, we have developed methods to prepare this radiopharmaceutical in three ways:-(i) from freshly prepared reagents, (ii) through the use of a two component kit and (iii) use of the standard renal DMSA kit by a modified recipe. The 99mTc(V)-DMSA complex has been subjected to paper electrophoretic and chromatographic procedures and also biodistribution studies. The distinctly different behaviour of this new product compared to that of the well known renal DMSA complex has been clearly established. Scintiimaging in a preliminary clinical trial in patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid has been encouraging.

Notes: Abstract The film formation method has been successfully used to grow single crystals and other complex morphological features of low melting form (LMF) and high melting form (HMF) of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPIP). Below 40 °C dilute amyl acetate solution gave hexagonal shaped LMF crystals. Thick and elongated hexagonal shaped morphology was shown by HMF crystals at temperatures above 40 °C. Straight faces and sharp corners of the single crystals, and also of complex crystals, acquired round shapes when highly polydispersed TPIP was used for crystallization.

Notes: Thermal behaviour of twelve different starches and their graft copolymers with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) from granular and gelatinized state, has been examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All the starches exhibit two endotherms around 65 and 260°C and an exotherm around 335°C. The graft copolymer from granular starch shows a weak endotherm around 65°C and an exotherm around 300°C, while gelatinized starch exhibits the characteristic exotherm of PAN at about 250°C along with the exotherm of graft product at 300°C. Scanning electron microscopic studies were carried out to explain the endotherms of starch at 65°C and 265°C. The former one may be due to heat of dehydration while the latter one is attributed to the fusion of crystallites in the starch. Legumine starches seem to have a specific property of retaining moisture even if they are grafted in gelatinized state.

Notes: The Silica structural framework in plant materials can be separated from the organic part by acid leaching and can be examined by SEM. Scanning electron micrographs characterizing the bonding and distribution patterns of silica in rice husk, rice straw and sugarcane leaves are presented. The differences in the surface morphology of the three plant products are discussed.
