    A double-blind comparison of felodipine and hydrochlorothiazide added to metoprolol to control hypertension (1988)

    Notes: Summary Seventy-six uncomplicated hypertensive patients treated in General Practice, whose seated diastolic blood pressure (Phase V) (dBP) remained ≥95 mmHg after a minimum of 4 weeks treatment with metoprolol 50 mg b.i.d. as antihypertensive monotherapy, were randomized to receive the selective ‘calcium antagonist’ felodipine 5 mg b.i.d. or hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg b.i.d. in addition to metroprolol 50 mg b.i.d. The trial duration was 8 weeks, the dose of the felodipine or hydrochlorothiazide being doubled after 4 weeks if ‘control’ of BP (dBP 〈90 mmHg) was not achieved on the initial doses. Over the trial period of 8 weeks, felodipine reduced dBP from 102 to 85 mmHg and hydrochlorothiazide from 101 to 91 mmHg; the dBP reduction in the felodipine group was greater than that in the hydrochlorothiazide group (17 vs 9 mmHg) and the attained dBP lower in the felodipine group. About half of the patients in each group required the higher dose. Both regimes were effective and well tolerated. In the dosages used, felodipine was a slightly more effective antihypertensive drug than hydrochlorothiazide when added to metoprolol. There was no apparent difference in the tolerability of the two regimes.

    Notes: A method which combines thermal and plasma dissociation of a methane/hydrogen gas mixture for low-pressure chemical vapor deposition of diamond is described. A hot, thin-walled, refractory metal cathode is used to generate a high-current, low-voltage discharge. The substrates are located on the anode and immersed in the plasma emanating from the cathode tip. No auxiliary substrate heating is employed. Polycrystalline diamond particles and films are obtained on silicon (100) and molybdenum substrates at growth rates of 1–3 μm/h.

    Notes: We report here the first clear demonstration of intensity-dependent phase shift due to electronic nonlinearity in a nonlinear polymer waveguide in which propagation distances over 5 cm have been achieved with total attenuation of ∼1.2 cm−1 . Intensity-dependent coupling angle, intensity-dependent coupling efficiency, and limiter action behavior have been observed in the polyamic acid waveguide using grating excitation with 400 fs, 80 ps, and 10 ns pulses. A nonlinear grating coupler analysis identifies the subpicosecond and picosecond processes with electronic nonlinearity, but the dominant effect in the nanosecond experiment is due to thermal nonlinearity derived from weak absorptions. The magnitude and sign of n2 of electronic nonlinearity are measured.

    Notes: Well-faceted diamond crystals and polycrystalline films have been produced by low-pressure, hot-filament-activated, chemical vapor deposition with the use of methane/ hydrogen gas. The effects on growth and morphology of varying filament and reactor tube materials as well as tube diameter are reported. Tungsten and tantalum filaments, operated under similar conditions, produced diamonds at essentially the same growth rates (typically ∼2 μm/h) and with similar crystallographic properties. Platinum filaments produced only graphitic deposits. Diamond growth and morphology appeared not to be influenced by changing the reactor wall material from fused quartz to Al2O3 or Pyrex or by varying the tube diameter.

    Notes: Cheek pouches of male Syrian golden hamsters were topically treated with a single dose of TPA (.5 μg), calcium ionophore A23187 (75 μgs) or Sn-1,2-dioctanoylglycerol (DiC8) (500 μg) dissolved in 0.25 ml acetone. Acetone-treated animals served as controls. After 48 h the mitotic index for the control group was 1.1 ± 0.1 per 1 mm of the basement membrane length. All the test congeners exhibited higher mitotic indices than controls: TPA (4.8 ± 0.4), A23187 (3.9 ± 0.3), DiC8 (2.1 ± 0.2). All groups exhibited an increase in the epithelial thickness manifested by cellular hyperplasia. The treatment of the pouches with the anti-inflammatory agent fluocinolone acetonide inhibited the milogenic and hyperplasiogenic affects on the epithelium induced by the various test chemicals. These studies indicate a possible role of calcium-phospholipid dependent protein kinase (protein kinase C) in the mediation of oral epithelial cell proliferation.

    Notes: Summary The resistance sources among various test cultivars of urdbean to Colletotrichum truncatum, a leaf spotting pathogen, were identified and genetics of resistance was worked out by studying F1, F2 and F3 generations of crosses between resistant cultivars and the susceptible cv. Kulu 4 and of those among the resistant parents. The resistance was found to be controlled by single dominant genes and the resistance genes were non-allelic.

    Notes: Summary To introduce resistance to fungal and viral diseases into urdbean (Vigna mungo), it was crossed with adzukibean (Vigna angularis) to achieve an interspecific hybrid between the two species by using different non-conventional breeding methods. Partial success was obtained with the use of UV irradiated pollen, intraspecific hybrids as parents and spray of immuno-suppressants on the female parent under glass house conditions and to the extent of callusing in aseptic culture.
