Notes: Two patients presented with the unusual condition of multiple warty dyskeratomas on the scalp. Biopsies of affected skin stained positive with human keratin monoclonal antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for cortex and inner root sheath of normal human hair, respectively. Multiple warty dyskeratomas are a rare occurrence and their actiopathogenesis remains elusive. Positive immunohistochemical staining of a lesion with antikeratin antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for human hair keratin, suggests a follicular origin for warty dyskeratoma.

Notes: We describe a 23-year-old Japanese man with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed massive cutaneous mucinosis. He was diagnosed with SLE when he was 11 years old. Prednisolone therapy (30 mg/day) was initiated and reduced to 10 mg/day 3 months later: the SLE had been well-controlled with this dose of prednisolone for 12 years. However, infiltrated erythematous plaques developed on the middle-lateral area of his back at 17 years old and progressed to erythematous and elastic soft tumorous masses over 20 cm in diameter at 23 years old. Biopsies of the lesions on the nape revealed massive mucin deposition. Topical injection with hyaluronidase decreased the lesion. This cutaneous mucinosis can be distinguished clinically and histopathologically from papular and nodular mucinosis associated with SLE. The present case might be an unusual clinical variant of cutaneous mucinosis associated with SLE.

Notes: Two types of spiral growth, single and double spirals, of C60 epitaxial films on a KBr(001) substrate were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These single and double spirals were found on films grown at different rates. All spiral islands show the threefold symmetry of the face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure. In the case of single spirals, many fringes were observed in three equivalent [11¯0] directions on the fcc (111) surface. From the AFM images, we concluded that the growth process of these spirals can be explained by the classical crystal growth theory of Burton, Cabrera, and Frank and that screw dislocations form without any direct influence of the substrate. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a patient with herpetiform pemphigus(HP)who showed reactivity only with pemphigus vulgaris(PV)antigen but not with pemphigus foliaceus(PF)antigen. Direct and indirect immuno- fluorescence revealed keratinocyte cell surface staining in the lower layers of the epidermis, where desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) is expressed. Immunoblot analysis, using ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid- separated human epidermal extracts, revealed that the patient's serum recognized only a 130-kDa polypeptide which co-migrated with Dsg3. By antigen-specific immunoadsorption studies, using desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and Dsg3 recombinant protein produced by baculovirus expression system, immunoreactivity of the patient's serum was completely adsorbed by Dsg3 alone, but not by Dsg1. These results indicate that this HP patient produced only anti-Dsg3 autoantibodies and no other autoantibodies against components of the keratinocyte cell surface. HP could be a variant of PV.in addition to PF, with unique clinical and histological features.

Notes: The effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) on the growth and DNA synthesis of cultured human keratinocytes obtained from involved and uninvolved psoriatic epidermis and normal epidermis were studied. Treatment with 10-8m and 10-7m of 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibited cell growth as follows: 58.5±19.3% and 21.3±13.6% in normal keratinocytes (n=6); 43.8±22.8% and 17.8±12.3% in psoriatic uninvolved keratinocytes (n=4); 51.7±18.2% and 13.2±6.4% in psoriatic involved keratinocytes (n=6). Inhibition was virtually complete at 10-6m. DNA synthesis was also inhibited by 10-8m, 10-7m and 10-6m of 1,25(OH)2D3 as follows: 70.0±8.3%, 59.0±6.8% and 16.7±4.0%, respectively, in normal keratinocytes (n=3); 78.5±13.5%, 51.5±25.5% and 24.5±21.5%, respectively, in psoriatic uninvolved keratinocytes (n=2); and 69.3±14.5%, 41.3±19.1% and 14.8±11.2%, respectively, in psoriatic involved keratinocytes (n=4). These results indicate that 1,25(OH)2D3 functions as a growth inhibitor for cultured human keratinocytes derived from both normal and psoriatic skin.

Notes: Abstract Utilizing the fact that the equilibrium potential of oxygen evolution is lower than that of chlorine evolution, oxygen evolution in seawater electrolysis was enhanced by decreasing the polarization potential under galvanostatic conditions through increasing the effective surface area of manganese oxide electrodes. Electrodes were prepared by a thermal decomposition method. IrO2-coated titanium (IrO2/Ti electrode) was used as the substrate on which manganese oxide was coated (MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode). Subsequently, oxide mixtures of manganese and zinc were coated (MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode). The effective surface area of the MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrodes was increased by selective dissolution of zinc (leaching) into hot 6M KOH. The oxygen evolution efficiency of the MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode was 68–70%. Leaching of zinc from the MnOX–ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrodes with 25mol% or less zinc led to a significant increase in the oxygen evolution efficiency. The maximum efficiency attained was 86% after leaching of zinc from the MnOX–25mol%ZnO/MnOX/IrO2/Ti electrode. However, large amounts of zinc addition, such as 40mol% or more are detrimental because of a decrease in the oxygen evolution efficiency. This is due to the formation of a double oxide, ZnMnO3, which is hardly dissolved in hot 6M KOH.

Notes: Abstract Recurrent low-grade gliomas in children were studied with special reference to correlation between the computed tomography (CT) scan and pathological findings at recurrence. During the past 16 years (1970–1986) 105 cases of primary pediatric brain tumors were treated in our hospital. Seventeen of these had low-grade glioma, seven of which (five astrocytomas, one ependymoma, and one subependymoma) had recurrence of tumor by the end of 1987. The enhanced CT findings were classified into three types — cystic, false cystic, and solid, according to Lapras' classification. The pathological findings of recurrent tumors were reviewed with particular attention to malignant transformation. The results showed that in two out of three cases where CT findings had changed from initial cystic to solid type at recurrence malignant transformation was revealed. Enhanced CT scan was also useful for detecting small asymptomatic recurrent tumors in children. On the other hand, surgical procedures and adjuvant therapies demonstrated no significant relationship with recurrence. It is suggested that the recurrence of low-grade glioma in children is not rare, and that changes in findings on contrast enhanced CT might reflect malignant transformation in a recurrent tumor, necessitating a careful follow-up.

Notes: Summary To investigate the incidence, the specificity and clinical significance of positivity for serum anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) in 31 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) technique and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to measure ANCA. Purified myeloperoxidase (MPO), lactoferrin (LF), cathepsin-G (CTG) and elastase (HLE) served as ANCA antigens for ELISA. Thirteen (42%) of the 31 SLE patients showed positivity for perinuclear, but not cytoplasmic, ANCA by IIF. Five of 31 sera were positive for MPO, 10 for LF, 1 for CTG and 0 for HLE by ELISA. Patients positive for ANCA had a higher score of SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) than those without ANCA. There was no correlation between ANCA positivity, clinical manifestations, or organic involvement. While the ANCA in patients with SLE reflected disease activity, it was unrelated to organic involvement.
