Notizen: The frequency of positive reactions to 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MCI/MI) were studied at 22 European cntact dermatitis clinics over a period of 1 year. A total of 4713 patients participated. All the patients were patch tested with nickel sulphate, formaldehyde, paraben-mix, and MCI/MI 19.4% of the patients had positive patch tests to nickel, making this the most common allergen, 3% of the patients reacted to 100 ppm MCI/MI, while 2.6% reacted to formaldchyde and 1.1% to parabens. There was great variation in the frequency of MCI/MI sensitivity among the 22 centres. MCI/MI contact allergy was most common among women and in patients with facial dermatitis, while it was rarely seen in patients with dermatitis on the lower legs. There were no fluctuations in the number of positive patch tests to MCI/MI on a monthly basis when the results from all centres were combined. 117 of the 141 MCI/MI sensitized patients included in the study were retested 88% had positive patch tests when retested. 101 of the MCI/MI-sensitive patients participated in a double -blind, placebo-controlled product use test. This test showed that 31% of the MCI/MI-sensitive patients had a positive reaction to a MCI/MI-preserved product. Only a few patients reacted to a control product. It is concluded that the preservative MCI/MI is an important new contact allergen.

Notizen: Capsular polysaccharides of Gram-negative bacteria contribute to a large extent to the pathogenicity of these organisms. We show here that the molecular organization of the capsule gene loci in different serogroups of Neisseria meningitidis is similar to that of Haemophilus influenzae and Escherichia coli. A common molecular origin of the mechanisms of encapsulation is indicated by strong homology of the genes involved in transport of the capsular polysaccharides to the cell surface in all these organisms. The proteins involved in capsular polysaccharide transport fit the characteristics of ABC (ATP-binding cassette) transporters. Furthermore, by sequence comparison of the sialyltransferases of N. meningitidis B and E. coli K1, the capsule of which is composed of α2,8-linked polyneuraminic acid, a significant degree of homology was observed, indicating that the capsular polysaccharide type itself has the same evolutionary origin in these two pathogens.

Notizen: In general, specific immunotherapy with hymenoptera venoms can be considered as safe, but occasionally there are patients who cannot reach the maintenance dose due to repeated systemic reactions (RSR) or who suffer from RSR during maintenance therapy. In a multicenter retrospective study comprising seven departments in Germany, Austria and Switzerland 23 patients with RSR were reported from approximately 3000 patients treated with hymenoptera venoms (bee and wasp venom to approximately equivalent frequency). From these, 22 were allergic to bee venom and only one to vespid venom. In general the clinical symptoms of RSR were milder than the initial reaction. But 4/23 (18%) exhibited cardiovascular reactions up to full shock. Neither anamnestic details, reactivity in skin tests or in vitro tests revealed a special pattern of patients with RSR. In some patients, however, an extremely high reactivity in the skin test was found and may indicate the possibility of further RSR.

Notizen: Seedlings of Phaseolus aureus ROXB were grown under 12/12 h light/dark cycles with the light period at 32.5°C and darkness at 10°C (normal conditions N) or with light at 10°C and darkness at 32.5°C (inverse conditions, I). I-conditions affected the level of chlorophyll and carotenoids (very low), monogalactosyldiacylgycerol (low) and phosphatidylinositol (high) in the leaves. Leaves of I-seedlings showed a sharp and durable decline of relative water content during the low temperature phase. For the N-seedlings, loss of water was restricted to the end of this period. The loss of water was accompanied by visible symptoms of wilting at specific times of day. Although the pigment content remained nearly unchanged, ABA content of leaves of both N-and I-seedlings increased during water stress. Upon return to the warm period, ABA level continued to increase after the leaves had regained turgor, this ‘after stress’increase being more pronounced in the leaves of I-seedlings. Exogenous application of ABA induced a slight increase in the content of phospholipids in N- and I-leaves and a decrease in free fatty acids, whereas monogalactosyldiacylglycerol content was significantly reduced in N-leaves after application of ABA. Upon transfer of I-plants to 20°C for 12 h during the light period, pigment and chloroplastic lipid content increased rapidly whereas upon a further exposure to 10°C in light, pigments and especially monogalactosyldiacylglycerol were lost. The control of pigment and lipid metabolism and the role of ABA during chilling stress are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract A chloroplast preparation was extracted from squash (Cucurbita pepo (L.) var. Senator). Enrichment of intact chloroplasts was achieved by continuous free-flow electrophoresis. The addition of monoterpenes, detergent and free fatty acids changed the elecrophoretic separation pattern characteristically. Monoterpene-dependent degradation of envelope membranes could be prevented by addition of α-tocopherol prior to monoterpene incubation. Photosynthetic electron transport of photosystem II was completely inhibited by β-pinene, Triton X-100 and linolenic acid. Inhibition could be modulated by addition of α-tocopherol or lecithin (phosphatidylcholine) either before or after inhibition by monoterpenes and detergent. Percentage reconstitution of photosynthetic electron transport inhibited by β-pinene depended on light conditions and incubation time.
