Notes: Abstract The orientation of males of the sorghum midge,Contarinia sorghicola Coq. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) towards virgin female baited sticky traps was studied in the field. Male response increased linearly with an increase in the number of virgin females in the sticky traps. Five females per vial were optimum for monitoring midge populations in the field. Numbers of males trapped were significantly greater in traps placed at 0.5 and 1.5 m above ground level compared with those placed at 2.5 m. Peak trap catches occurred at 0900 h. The number of males trapped decreased significantly after 1400 h; male catches continued till sunset. Trap catches followed the same pattern as the number of ovipositing females on sorghum panicles at the half-anthesis stage. Midge activity decreased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in relative humidity. Peak midge density was observed during the second fortnight of October in the rainy season and during February-March in the post-rainy season. Sex pheromones can be used to monitor midge population dynamics for integrated pest management and to screen for host plant resistance to this insect.

Notes: Summary The pharmakokinetic profiles of intraperitoneally infused platinum analogues were determined in 13 women exhibiting minimal residual disease following surgery and systemic chemotherapy for epithelial ovarian cancer of fallopian tube carcinoma by following the disposition of tracer doses of195mPt radiolabel. Six patients received iproplatin, four were given cisplatin and three received carboplatin. The present data demonstrate no difference in the disposition of total platinum between these three analogues, but differences in the kinetics of free platinum may exist.

Notes: Abstract In separate groups of Fischer 344 and Long Evans rats, initial sensitivity and acute tolerance to ethanol were determined in a jumping test. Sensitivity measurements in each strain were carried out in separate subgroups at ethanol doses of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 g/kg IP. Similarly, acute tolerance was measured in different subgroups of each strain using the method of two successive doses of ethanol (2 + 0.4 g/kg; 2 + 0.7 g/kg and 2 + 1.0 g/kg, respectively). After completion of sensitivity and acute tolerance measurement, acute tolerance was then tested in all rats. Based on their acute tolerance values, they were divided into three groups: high, medium, and low. Two weeks after the last acute tolerance test, six rats from each group (i.e., the six highest and six lowest from the high and low acute tolerance groups, respectively, and six from the midrange of the medium tolerance group) were tested for voluntary ethanol drinking in the limited access model. Long Evans rats had lower initial CNS sensitivity to ethanol-induced impairment of jumping performance than Fischer 344 rats. Long Evans rats also drank significantly more alcohol than the Fischer 344 but there was no significant difference in acute tolerance development between these two strains. Moreover, within each strain the rats differing in acute tolerance development (i.e., high, medium, and low) showed no difference in alcohol consumption. These results suggest that acute tolerance development is not the main determinant of differences in ethanol drinking.

Notes: Summary Sorghum head bug, Calocoris angustatus Leth., is an important pest of grain sorghum. We screened nearly 15000 germplasm accessions for resistance to this pest between 1980 and 1990 under natural and headcage conditions. Data were recorded on bug numbers, grain damage (1 = highly resistant the 5 = highly susceptible), and seed germination. Under natural conditions, 34 genotypes suffered moderate levels of grain damage (damage rating (DR) 1.7 to 2.9) compared with a DR of 4.0 to 4.6 in the susceptible controls CSH 1, CSH 5 and CSH 9. IS 17610, IS 17645, IS 21444, IS 19948, IS 25069 and IS 19949 suffered a DR of less than three, and harbored less than 150 bugs/panicle compared with a DR of 4.3 to 4.7, and 248 to 353 bugs/panicle in the susceptible controls CSH 1, CSH 5 and CSH 9 when infested under headcage with 5 pairs of bugs/panicle. IS 18274, IS 20664, IS 20059, IS 25069, and IS 19951 had 150 to 300 bugs/panicle but suffered moderate levels of grain damage (DR less than 3), while the reverse was true in case of IS 8064, IS 19455, IS 19955, IS 20024, IS 20740, IS 23627, IS 2761, and IS 9692. During the 1989 rainy season, IS 14108, IS 17610, IS 17618, IS 17645, IS 19949, IS 19950, IS 19957, IS 20068, IS 25760, IS 27452, IS 27477 and IS 27329 suffered moderate levels of grain damage when infested with 5 and 10 pairs of bugs/panicle, and recorded more than 80% seed germination compared with a DR of 3.9 to 5.0, and seed germination of 15–18% in the susceptible controls CSH 1, CSH 5 and CSH 9. There is a considerable diversity in the genotypes resistant to head bugs, and attempts should be made to transfer the resistance into agronomically acceptable cultivars.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-two cultivars and lines of winter and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were studied, most for the first time, for their anther culture response. The response was genotype dependent. Plants grown in the field gave higher callus induction frequency than those grown in the greenhouse and the controlled environment chamber. Donor plants grown in a season of low drought stress as compared to a season of severe drought stress resulted in a higher frequency of callus induction. Spherical microcalli were observed in two wheat genotypes in some of only those anthers that were placed with only one loculus in contact with the medium. Wheat lines that were more responsive to anther culture were identified.

Notes: Summary Sorghum head bug (Calocoris angustatus Leth.) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is an important pest of grain sorghum in India. We studied the fecundity of head bug females reared for one to three generations on head bug-resistant and head bug-susceptible genotypes during the 1988 and 1989 rainy and 1988–89 post-rainy seasons. Head bug population increase was lower for the first, second and/or third generation when the bugs were reared on IS 2761, IS 19955, IS 14334, IS 23748, IS 16357, IS 17610, and IS 21444 compared with the susceptible controls CSH 1, CSH 5, and CSH 9. These genotypes also suffered a low grain damage (damage rating (DR) ≤5) (except IS 2761) compared with the susceptible controls (DR〉6). A marginal decrease in fecundity was observed when the bugs were reared on IS 2761, IS 14334, IS 16357, IS 20740 and IS 17610 and then transferred to the susceptible control, CSH 1. Sorghum genotypes having lower increase in bug population across generations, suffering low grain damage, and showing adverse effects on fecundity can be used in breeding for resistance to head bugs.

Notes: Abstract In most of the Indian cities drinking water is drawn from shallow aquifers with the help of hand pumps. These shallow aquifers get easily polluted. In the present work we have measured 20 trace elements using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and 8 chemical parameters using standard chemical methods of drinking water drawn from Rajpura city. It was found that almost all water samples are highly polluted. We attribute this to unplaned disposal of industrial and domestic waste over a period of many decades.
