Notes: We have observed low-threshold lasing in a GaAs single quantum-well vertical microcavity. At 4 K the quantum-well emission linewidth is reduced, and the coupling efficiency β of the spontaneous emission to the lasing mode is improved. The laser threshold pump power obtained for a 200 A(ring) GaAs quantum well pumped by a continuous wave Ti:sapphire laser was 5 mW, corresponding to 85 μW absorbed power. We have compared the experimental results with the theoretical prediction, and estimated the value of β to be 10−2.

Notes: We report high power and high efficiency operation of a vertical cavity surface emitting GaAs laser in an external cavity. The maximum cw output power from the fundamental TEM00 mode was 700 mW at a temperature of 77 K when pumped by a cw krypton-ion laser with 1.8 W pump power. We obtained an absolute quantum efficiency (pump photons to lasing photons) of 44%, and a differential efficiency above threshold of 58%.

Notes: Eleven awake dogs and two cats received high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) via a transtracheal catheter for 6 hours to evaluate their clinical tolerance to the technique. A bronchoscopic examination was performed in all animals prior to and the morning of the day after the procedure to determine the gross effects of the technique on the tracheal epithelium. All animals tolerated the technique well, exhibiting no discomfort and only a minimal amount of coughing. Only one dog exhibited coughing on the day following the procedure. No bronchoscopic changes were noted after HFJV in one dog. In one dog and one cat, the only observed change was an increase in the prominence of the vascularity compared to that observed prior to HFJV. The remaining animals exhibited more severe tracheal changes that included: an accumulation of mucus (seven dogs, one cat), focal spots of hemorrhage (two dogs), linear stretches of epithelial denuding (two dogs), and diffuse reddening and epithelial denuding (four dogs).High-frequency jet ventilation by a transtracheal intravenous catheter is well tolerated for short-term ventilatory support in dogs and cats, but the magnitude of the tracheal damage observed in the present report may preclude long-term ventilatory support by this tecnique.

Notes: Summary A 45-year-old woman developed a myelopathy 9 years after a spontaneous left caroticocavernous fistula (CCF) was treated by a trapping procedure, with clipping distal to the fistula and ligation of the common carotid artery. Spinal MRI and vertebral angiography revealed recurrence of the CCF and gigantic tortuous veins draining through the brain stem down to the midcervical spinal cord. The abnormal veins and myelopathy disappeared after surgical closure of the CCF.

Notes: Summary The effects of the calcium antagonist nicardipine on the pressor response to mental arithmetic, cold pressor and exercise tests have been studied in fifteen patients with established mild to moderate essential hypertension. Nicardipine 20 mg p.o. showed a hypotensive effect within 60 min, associated with a fall in total peripheral resistance and an increase in heart rate. As the pressor response to each stress was not affected by nicardipine, the peak blood pressure reached during each stress was lower. Nicardipine lowers blood pressure at rest as a result of arteriolar dilatation, associated with reflex tachycardia. The pressor responsiveness to various stresses was not affected by nicardipine.

Notes: Abstract Micron-size monodisperse crosslinked polymer microspheres having chloromethyl groups were prepared by seeded copolymerization of styrene, divinylbenzene, and chloromethylstyrene in the presence of 2.1-μ monodisperse polystyrene seed particles produced by dispersion polymerization. The modification reaction of chloromethyl groups on the surfaces with polyamines such as triethylenetetramine and ethylenediamine was carried out. From the measurements of ξ potential and the amount of chloride ion released, the introduction of a large number of cationic groups at the surfaces was confirmed.

Notes: Abstract TheG-matrix interactions are derived from the Jülich YN interaction models A and B, and compared with those from the Nijmegen models. The DDHF calculations for heavy A hypernuclei and the shell-model analysis for spin-doublet states of light hypernuclei are performed by use of theG-matrix interactions. It is demonstrated that the OBE models can be tested by the hypernuclear calculations.

Notes: Abstract A delayed coincidence method has been developed for the selective extraction of radionuclides with half-lives of millisecond order using a personal computer. The time interval analysis is fundamentally based on the distinction of the time interval distribution between the correlated and random events, which arise from radioactive disintegration and/or background events within a certain fixed time. Theoretical functions of a time spectrum or a time distribution curve were dealt with from aspects of statistical treatments consisting of a single time interval analysis and a multiple one (STA and MTA). The theoretical equations obtained were used to simulate time spectra on the assumption of some ideal data and compared with the experimental results. Conclusively, the MTA method has been verified to be more suitable for the selective extraction of the objective correlated events from random or background events for the search of radioactive nuclides with millisecond life-times.

Notes: Abstract Given a setΩ ofR n and a functionf fromΩ intoR n we consider a problem of finding a pointx * inΩ such that(x−x *) t f(x *)≽0 holds for every pointx inΩ. This problem is called the stationary point problem and the pointx * is called a stationary point. We present a variable dimension algorithm for solving the stationary point problem with an affine functionf on a polytopeΩ defined by constraints of linear equations and inequalities. We propose a system of equations whose solution set contains a piecewise linear path connecting a trivial starting point inΩ with a stationary point. The path can be followed by solving a series of linear programs which inherit the structure of constraints ofΩ. The linear programs are solved efficiently with the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition method by exploiting fully the structure.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes the use of human-limb impedance for biodynamic analysis. The change of human-limb impedance during movement was measured, and was found to be related to kinematic and kinetic parameters. Strong relationships were found between the velocity of change of the forearm impedance and the angular velocity of the elbow joint (correlation coefficient r=−0·97), between the change of foream impedance and the acceleration of a human limb (r=0·86), and between the change of forearm impedance and the velocity of a human limb (r=0·79). A change of upper-limb impedance was caused by a change in a sectional area of muscular tissue in the measured part and a change of blood volume during movement of an upper limb. In tennis, there was a strong relationship between a change of forearm impedance and ball velocity (r=0·87). Impedance waveforms were useful for analysis of the movement pattern and the stability of movement in tennis. This method has the following characteristics: (a) it does not have a spatial and temporal limitation for measurement; (b) the subject is scarcely restricted in movement; (c) the data processing can be handled easily and quickly; (d) impedance waveforms inherently show magnitude, form and stability of movement.
