Notes: Seven varieties of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), of varying leaf size from large to small, were sown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in 1985, at an upland site, and compared over three harvest years under a cutting management (5-6 cuts), and under continuous grazing by sheep. Fertilizer N input totalled 80 kg ha−1 in both the cutting and the grazing trial. The same varieties were included in two official National List (NL) trials sown the same year at a nearby site; these comprised a yield trial with 6-7 cuts and a persistency trial mown very frequently (17 cuts) to simulate intensive grazing. At the upland site the large-leaved varieties, Milkanova and Blanca, were the highest yielding under cutting (mean 3·3 t DM ha−1), and the small-leaved S184 and Kent the lowest yielding (mean 2·3 t DM ha−1). The rankings were reversed under grazing (corresponding yields 1·1 and 2·1 t DM ha−1). The medium-leaved varieties Donna, Menna and Grasslands Huia behaved similarly to the large-leaved varieties. Ranking order in the cutting trial was similar to that in the NL trial.Ground covers after three harvest years differed significantly only under grazing, when the small-leaved varieties had a 2-3 times greater cover than the larger-leaved varieties. A poor separation of the varieties in the NL persistency trial suggests that defoliation was not sufficiently severe to simulate intensive grazing. These comparisons indicate that the performance of clover varieties under the cutting regimes used should not be extrapolated to continuous sheep grazing.

Notes: Abstract The motion of a two-dimensional bubble which is moving between two parallel plates under the influence of a constant pressure has been investigated using the Boundary Element Method. A free surface location algorithm has been developed so that the profile of the bubble may be predicted over a large range of values of the surface tension. The numerically predicted results are compared with existing experimental data and the results are encouraging.

Notes: Abstract The mean minimal capillary transit time was estimated in muscles of various animals using a combination of physiological and morphometric methods. Radioactive microspheres were injected intravascularly in various animals running on a treadmill at maximum oxygen consumption rate (VO2,max) to label blood flow to individual muscles. The muscles were then removed and preserved by standard methods for electron microscopy. The volume density of mitochondria was measured to assess muscle oxidative capacity. Capillary densities in muscle cross-sections, capillary diameters and tortuosities were incorporated into an estimate of capillary volume per unit muscle mass. Mean capillary transit time (t c) in the exercising muscles was estimated by dividing mass-specific capillary volume by mass-specific blood flow. Estimates of t c ranged from values near 1 s in horse heart and thigh muscles to 0.2 s in duck gastrocnemius. The relationship between muscle blood flow and t c was hyperbolic. The experimental data indicate a limiting value of 0.2 s for transit times at very high blood flows. There was no correlation between t c and body-mass-specific VO2,max.

Notes: Abstract The performance of two new enzyme immunoassays (EIA) for the detection ofChlamydia trachomatis in a practice setting was compared. A consecutive series of 207 female patients seen at an inner-city sexually transmitted disease clinic were tested by cell culture, the Kodak SureCell (SC) and Abbott TestPack Chlamydia (TP) EIAs. In addition 210 male patients, selected by physicians on the basis of the fact that multiple urethral samples could be obtained, were tested by cell culture and SC. The prevalence of infection was 19 % in the females and 12.5 % in males. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for the SC and TP were 88 %, 95 %, 81 %, 97 % and 59 %, 99 %, 95 %, 91 %, respectively, in the female population. The sensitivity of the SC was significantly greater than that of the TP (p ≤ 0.002). The performance values of the SC in men (in the same order) were 64 %, 96 %, 71 % and 95 %, respectively. The SC in male patients and the TP in female patients had low sensitivity. The sensitivity of the SC in female patients was significantly higher than that of the TP. However, the SC yielded more false positive results. To determine the utility of these tests in a practice setting further studies are required.

Notes: Abstract The need for highly charged heavy ions from projected particle accelerators has recently led to a re-evaluation of the complex processes of ion production in laser generated plasmas. Possible mechanisms for the production of intense beams of high charge state ions are investigated as is the experimental evidence for these mechanisms. The hypothesis that 20 keV ions are driven by “hot electrons” is not supported by experimental work to date. This work, on the other hand, suggests that 30ps pulsation is the basic mechanism for the acceleration of tantalum ions up to charge state 8+ whose energy increases linearly with charge state up to 24keV. For long pulses and charge states between 8+ and 18+, it appears that there is a secondary mechanism of electron impact ionisation by plasma electrons of approximately 200 eV in the plasma in front of the target, resulting in ions whose energy of around 24 keV is independent of charge state.

Notes: Abstract Inorganic amorphous polymetallosiloxane (PMS) coating films on aluminium substrate were produced through the polycondensation-pyrolysis reaction mechanisms of a sol-precursor solution. The precursor solution was formed by HCl-catalysed hydrolysis of a mixture ofN-[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-4,5-dihydroimidazole (TSPI) and M(OC3H7) n , (M=Zr, Ti and Al,n=3 or 4). The TSPI/Zr(OC3H7)4 or Ti(OC3H7)4 precursor systems formed higher quality thin coating films, compared to the /Al(OC3H7) system. This was because of the critical formation of the polyorganosiloxane terminated by end groups containing zirconium and titanium oxides. These end groups were derived by a dechlorinating reaction between the Cl, bonded to the propyl C in organosilane, and the hydroxylated Zr or Ti compounds in the sintering stages of the film production. Good film-forming performance resulted from moderate degrees of cross-linking of metal oxides to polysiloxane chains and of the densification of metal -O-Si linkages in the pyrolysis-induced PMS network. In addition to these factors, the formation of an oxane bond at the interface between PMS and aluminium provided corrosion protection for the aluminium substrate.

Notes: This paper exmines the influence of process variables on final thickness distributions for vacuum-formed thermoplastic parts. The process variables investigated include evacuation rate, sheet surface temperature, mold temperature, and material slip over the mold surface. The experimental data presented include, in addition to thicknesses, sheet surface temperature obtained via infrared thermography. A finite element program to model the vacuum-forming process is discussed, and the wall thickness distribution predicted by this program for a vacuum-formed part is compared with the results of the experiments.

Notes: Abstract The geographical distribution of age at menarche in great Britain is analysed in two successive generations. It appears that the variances for age at menarche are equal throughout the country. The means, however, show significant and complicated patterns of regional variation. In the southern and eastern parts of the country, menarche was earlier than in the northern parts in both generations. This patterning is not due to social class differentiation. Except for the sparsely populated areas in northern and western Scotland and for the extreme south-western parts of England and Wales all areas show evidence of a decline in age at menarche from the mothers' to the daughters' generation.
