Notes: Summary Chronological studies of the development of the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor sites were undertaken with the goal of evaluating the sensitivity of this marker for the study of the gliosis development in the injured brain. No significant increase in [3H] PK-11195 binding occurred in the rat brain stab wound one day following the puncture. A significant increase in the receptor density (Bmax) from the second day onward was observed. The Bmax reached its highest levels in the grey matter on the sixth day after a 23-gauge needle wound (8.75 ± 0.09; pmol mg-tissue−1) and on the seventh day after an 18-gauge needle wound (8.98 ± 0.31 pmol mgtissue−1). In the white matter, the Bmaxwas greatest seven days after the wound (3.42 ± 0.07; pmol mg-tissue−1; 23-gauge needle and 3.56 ±0.1 pmol mg-tissue−1 in the 18-gauge needle injury). Between 30 and 60 days after the wound, the Bmax was significantly lower than the Bmax observed between 6 and 14 days. The Bmax in the wound produced with needles was seven to eight times greater than the Bmax in the grey matter of the ipsilateral and contralateral cortices. Histological examination showed that there were no astrocytes or macrophages in the stab wound one day after the lesion. However, the glial fibrillary acidic protein positive cells and macrophages appeared on D3 after an injury. Gliosis, as measured by the PK-11195 binding, was also observed in the remote contralateral cortex. Data shows that PK-11195 binding is a very sensitive method of evaluating brain injury and could be of great value in studying progressive injuries in the living human brain in conjunction with positron emission tomography.

Notes: Summary The linewidth of the microcavity exciton polariton is studied by onresonant and off-resonant photoluminescences. The two main contributions to the linewidth are caused by radiative loss and phonon scattering. The oscillator strength is found to be unmodified by the exciton-phonon coupling. Comparison is made between theory and experiment.

Notes: Abstract: The effect of treatment with acute fluoxetine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on the rate of serotonin synthesis in the rat brain was studied through autoradiography following intravenous administration of α-methyl-l-[3H]tryptophan. The rate of serotonin synthesis in fluoxetine-treated rats was compared with the rate measured in sham-treated rats (saline injection). Results showed a significant increase in the rate of synthesis in the majority of cerebral structures examined. The greatest increase (given as a percentage of rates in control animals) in the rate of serotonin synthesis was observed in the substantia nigra compacta (344%), hippocampus-CA3 (337%), dorsal hippocampus (283%), and caudate-putamen (232%). Fluoxetine had a less significant effect on the rate of synthesis in the pineal body (44%). Data suggest that acute fluoxetine treatment (30 mg/kg, i.p.) enhances the rate of serotonin synthesis in all the structures of rat brain examined in this work.

Notes: By using the second harmonic generation (SHG) microscope, which we have recently developed, two-dimensional images of ferroelectric domain structure were successfully obtained by exploiting the inhomogeneous distribution of the quadratic nonlinear optical constant in specimens. 90° domain structure of BaTiO3 was observed with intensity contrast of the second harmonic wave. A periodically inverted antiparallel domain in LiTaO3 was also observed. This fact indicates that the SHG microscope provides a new method of observing antiparallel ferroelectric domain structure in a nondestructive way, which is especially important for characterizing the quasiphase matched devices for compact blue light lasers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed the dressed-exciton oscillating emission in the time domain and the associated spectral splitting in the frequency domain from a GaAs single quantum well microcavity over a very broad range of cavity resonant wavelengths. The spectral splitting and temporal oscillation period have been measured to be nearly constant over two orders of magnitude variation of pump intensity, which confirms the linear bosonic feature of Wannier excitons in the weak excitation regime. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The origin of the thermal instability of the AlInAs/GaInAs system is identified and a novel method to recover the thermal degradation is also demonstrated. The thermal diffusion of fluorine into the Si-doped AlInAs layer is found to be the main cause of the electrical deterioration of this system. This finding has led to a method to recover the thermal degradation by purging the fluorine off using the reannealing in the ultrahigh-vacuum condition. This method is now potentially becoming a good candidate as a tip for the AlInAs/GaInAs devices fabrication including laser diode and high electron mobility transistor. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The muscular architecture and the distribution of nerves with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like (VIP-like) immunoreactivity were examined in the gastroduodenal junction of the chicken. Both the outer and the inner muscle layers (tunica muscularis) and the muscularis mucosae were examined. The inner muscle layer was divided into two parts, namely its inner and outer parts. The outer muscle layer was not present in the pyloric part but was found in the proventriculus and the duodenum. The muscle strands of the outer muscle layer ran longitudinally but were absent at the isthmus and the pylorus. Most of the outer part of the inner muscle layer was located in or close to the pyloric part. The muscle strands in the outer part connected the pyloric part with other regions, namely the craniodorsal muscle, the tendinous centres and the isthmus. The inner part of the inner muscle layer was widely distributed in the stomach. In the pyloric part, the muscle strands of this layer followed a circular or spiral course. The muscularis mucosae was not present in the caudodorsal and cranioventral muscles of the gizzard. In addition, VIP-like immunoreactive nerve fibres were predominantly distributed in the inner part of inner muscle layer of the pyloric part. These results suggest that the ventriculopyloric orifice and the pyloric part itself constrict with a sphincter-like action.

Notes: Abstract To examine the relationship of Ito cells to postnecrotic liver fibrosis, liver specimens, obtained at autopsy from 17 patients with acute massive necrosis (AMN) and acute submassive hepatic necrosis (ASMN), were examined immunohistochemically. In normal adult livers, Ito cells positive for α-smooth muscle actin isoform (ASMA) were rarely seen, scattered along hepatic sinusoids. In contrast, in AMN the Ito cells in necrotic areas became strongly positive for ASMA. They were swollen with elongated cytoplasmic processes along collapsed sinusoidal walls. Around these ASMA-positive Ito cells, there were numerous infiltrated macrophages and lymphocytes present. There was no significant alteration of fibroblasts in the portal tracts. In the middle and late stages of ASMN, the spindle-shaped ASMA-positive Ito cells formed a continuous cellular network. New fibre formation was predominantly around them. In this immediate postnecrotic fibrosis, ASMA-positive stromal cells of Ito cell origin were distributed irregularly and were closely associated with reticulin and newly-formed collagen fibres. Regenerative nodules were surrounded by dense layers of ASMA-positive stromal cells. Throughout the stages of ASMN, portal fibroblasts remained negative for ASMA. We believe that Ito cells in necrotic areas show myofibroblastic transformation and play a central role in the postnecrotic liver fibrosis. Portal fibroblasts play no significant part in this type of fibrosis.

Notes: Abstract The significance of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and nuclear DNA content in 73 glottic carcinomas was assessed for proliferative activity and tumor progression. NORs stained with silver colloid were counted, and nuclear DNA content was assayed by cytofluorometry. The cytofluorometric study demonstrated that the percentage of tumors with aneuploidy tended to increase as histological differentiation decreased. Survival rates of patients with diploid and aneuploid tumors were not significantly different. AgNOR staining revealed that mean AgNOR numbers rose as histological differentiation of tumors decreased. Moreover, as T and N categories and stages showed advancing malignancy, mean AgNOR numbers tended to rise. However, there was no significant difference in survival rates between tumors with low and with high AgNOR counts. These studies indicate that while AgNOR staining is better than DNA cytofluorometry for determining histological differentiation of glottic carcinoma, neither is of prognostic value at the present time.

Notes: Abstract The effects of vitamin A, selenium and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) on the growth of a human tongue cancer cell line were examined in monolayer cell cultures. A colony-forming assay showed a 50% reduction in the survival rate of the cell line at a concentration of 2.6 μg/ml selenium, 60 I μg/ml vitamin A and/or 38 μg/ml BHT. Relatively low concentrations of selenium markedly inhibited glucose consumption. Flow cytometric analysis with both fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labelled bromodeoxyuridine monoclonal antibody and propidium iodide demonstrated an increase in S-phase fractions 1 day after the addition of selenium, increased GO/G1 phase fractions in the presence of vitamin A and increased G2M phase fractions when BHT was added. These results suggest that these compounds inhibit DNA synthesis of in vitro human tongue cancer cells by different mechanisms.
