    Notizen: We have applied the laser-pump/probe and double-beam absorption/dispersion approaches to the far wings of the Hg 3P1–1S0 resonance line broadened by collisions with H2, D2, and HD. Absolute reduced absorption coefficients of the Hg–D2 quasimolecules have been determined as a function of the wave-number shift Δ from the resonance-line center both in the red and blue wings. The nascent rotational distributions have been determined for the v=0 and 1 levels of HgH (X 2Σ+) and the v=0 level of HgD (X 2Σ+) formed from the Hg*(3P1)–H2, D2, and HD collisional–quasimolecular states A˜ and B˜ attained by the red- and blue-wing excitation, respectively. Both of the intermediate states A˜ and B˜ give quite similar rotational distributions peaking around N(approximately-equal-to)18 for HgH and N(approximately-equal-to)25 for HgD insensitive to the excitation-wave-number shift Δ. However, a small difference is found: the red-wing excitation gives larger populations in the low-N levels than the blue-wing one. The departing atom isotope effect is observed in these low-N populations of HgD from Hg–D2 and Hg–HD. The absolute ratio of the nascent yields of v=1 to 0 has been measured to be 0.3, being nearly constant against Δ in both the red and blue wings. These observations indicate that HgH is formed predominantly from a bent H–Hg–H configuration on both the pathways via the A˜ and B˜ states. The different type of transition state, however, may be encountered on the pathways producing the minor components in the low-N levels. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A gold neutral beam is perpendicularly injected into a plasma column along a main chord near an inner mirror throat of a plug/barrier cell in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10, in order to directly measure time evolution of the electrostatic radial potential profile during one shot. The new method pays attention to the fact that trajectories of the ions, which are ionized at each point on the path of the neutral beam in the plasma column, are shifted due to the magnetic field gradient and the electrostatic potential. After traveling about a half period of Larmor motion, ions are detected by a plate type of ion detector. The radial profiles of the plasma potential are determined analyzing positions of the ion beam spots on the detector plane. The main advantage of this method is that radial potential profiles in a strong magnetic field region can be measured as a function of time during one shot without sweeping incident beam angles. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the structural development of polyparaphenylene (PPP) based carbon at various heat treatment temperatures (THT), with an emphasis on the low THT regime. Experimental data show that PPP-based carbons undergo a smooth transiiton from a mostly PPP polymer-type structure for heat treatments below ∼750 °C to a graphitized structure at a heat treatment temperature of 2700 °C. These results give insight into the unusually high specific capacities observed in lithium-PPP systems which are of particular interest for application to Li ion battery technology. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of cleaved surfaces of undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures has been performed under laser irradiation, by which the tunneling current is strongly enhanced via photocarrier generation. Clear STM images are obtained with high contrast between the GaAs and the AlGaAs layers when the laser wavelength is 800 nm which creates photocarriers only in the GaAs regions. It is found that the STM tip height difference between the GaAs and the AlGaAs regions reaches as large as 25 nm in the constant-current mode. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We report electron spin resonance (ESR) results on heat-treated polyparaphenylene (PPP) over the heat-treatment temperature (THT) range of 650–2900 °C. Two distinct spin centers are identified corresponding to a broad (∼5 G) ESR peak below THT=750 °C and a narrow (∼0.5 G) ESR peak above THT=650 °C. ESR peaks from both spin centers are observable for THT=700 °C, a material of particular interest for device applications. T1 and T2, the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times, respectively, are estimated for both spin centers, and these results are discussed in relation to previously reported Raman spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Decay probabilities of the excited Hg*(3P1)–H2 quasimolecule into the reactive channel (hGH formation) or into the elastic channel (Hg*(3P1) formation) have been determined as a function of Δ both for the red-wing excited A˜i and blue-wing excited B˜ states. The rest of these decay probabilities have been attributed to three-body dissociation Hg(1S0)+H+H. These results indicate that (a) the A˜-state surface serves more effectively in HgH formation than the B˜-state surface by a factor of about 2.3; but (b) three-body dissociation, in turn, proceeds far more efficiently on the B˜-state surface than on the A˜-state surface. Discussions about the energy barriers and the orbital correlations for HgH formation are presented, based on the Δ dependence of these decaying probabilities. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract Papillary adenoma of type II pneumocytes is a rare tumour. It is considered to be a benign neoplasm and is derived from immature cells in the bronchioloalveolar epithelium, however, its biological nature has not been elucidated. We report a case of an adenomatous tumour; a papillary adenoma of type II pneumocytes, which we regard as possessing malignant potential. Light microscopically, as well circumscribed, papillary tumour of predominantly cuboidal cells resembling type II pneumocytes was found, but Clara type and ciliated cells were also present. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted positively with antibodies to surfactant apoproteins (A, B), carcinoembryonic antigen, cytochrome P-450 1A1-2 and 2B1-2. Ultrastructurally, many osmiophilic lamellar bodies and electron-dense granules were demonstrated. Semi-serial sections revealed signs of transbronchial dissemination and vascular invasion. Morphometry using 12-dimensional cluster analysis disclosed features of the tumour cells which resembled those of pneumocyte type II adenocarcinoma. These findings suggest that the present case has some malignant characteristics and originates from immature bronchiolar or alveolar cells, with a potential to develop into both type II pneumocyte and Clara cell type adenocarcinomas.

    Notizen: Abstract The natural acoustical environment contains many reflective surfaces that give rise to echoes, complicating the task of sound localization and identification. The barn owl (Tyto alba), as a nocturnal predator, relies heavily on its auditory system for tracking and capturing prey in this highly echoic environment. The external nucleus of the owl's inferior colliculus (ICx) contains a retina-like map of space composed of “space-specific” auditory neurons that have spatially limited receptive fields. We recorded extracellularly from individual space-specific neurons in an attempt to understand the pattern of activity across the ICx in response to a brief direct sound and a simulated echo. Space-specific neurons responded strongly to the direct sound, but their response to a simulated echo was suppressed, typically, if the echo arrived within 5 ms or less of the direct sound. Thus we expect there to be little or no representation within the ICx of echoes arriving within such short delays. Behavioral tests using the owl's natural tendency to turn their head toward a sound source suggested that owls, like their space-specific neurons, similarly localize only the first of two brief sounds. Naive, untrained owls were presented with a pair of sounds in rapid succession from two horizontally-separated speakers. With interstimulus delays of less than 10 ms, the owl consistently turned its head toward the leading speaker. Longer delays elicited head turns to either speaker with approximately equal frequency and in some cases to both speakers sequentially.
