Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A 50 year old female patient received anaesthesia of the arm by the vertical infraclavicular blockade of the plexus brachialis (VIP). Postoperatively an ipsilateral pneumothorax occured complicated by pleural effusion and a contralateral bronchopneumonia, which resolved completely after treatment. The blockade of the plexus was performed correctly, failures in determining the correct point of needle insertion could be excluded. Therefore a pneumothorax has to be regarded as a specific complication of the VIP, which might occur despite correct technique, and requires that the patient be informed of this eventuality. Nevertheless, the VIP is an important method due to its high success rate concerning blockade of the musculocutaneous nerve and tolerance of tourniquet. The risk of a pneumothorax is about 0.2 to 0.7%.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The discovery of the suprarenal glands and their function is discussed. The complicated history of cortisone from the synthesis until its use as an antirheumatic is told. Pharmacotherapy with this physiologic hormone also caused serious side effects. Changing the molecular structure did not essentially solve this problem. Only after finding novel ways of application could these risks be reduced. The indications for therapy were further effectively reduced after understanding the mechanisms of action. Modern standards for corticoid therapy of rheumatoid arthritis are discussed. The important problem of corticoid osteoporosis and the myth of cortisone ulcers are also explained. The problems of coping with patient fears to cortisone are considered. Concurring drugs of cortisone and their special benefits are compared.

Notes: Intensive grow-out of goldfish, Carassius auratus (L.), larvae and juveniles in closed systems requires the control of environmental conditions and feeding. This study investigates the use of different types of live food and combinations of live food and dry food in a series of four rearing experiments. Juvenile goldfish can be weaned from Artemia onto live food at about 24 days after the onset of feeding without causing a reduction in growth and survival. The replacement of Artemia by Daphnia at day 10 appears feasible, as growth and survival were not significantly affected. Fish fed decapsulated Artemia cysts grew better than fish fed live Artemia. Within the first 14 days, goldfish juveniles should be fed at least 155 cysts per fish per day to achieve fast growth and to minimize size variation.

Notes: Probiotics for aquaculture are generally only selected by their ability to produce antimicrobial metabolites; however, attachment to intestinal mucus is important in order to remain within the gut of its host. Five candidate probiotics (AP1–AP5), isolated from the clownfish, Amphiprion percula (Lacepéde), were examined for their ability to attach to fish intestinal mucus and compete with two pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio alginolyticus. Two different radioactive isotopes were used to quantify competition between pathogens and probionts. Attachment of the pathogens was enhanced by the presence of the candidate probiotics. However, the addition of the candidate probiotics after the pathogens resulted in reduced pathogen attachment. Only AP5 caused lower attachment success of V. alginolyticus when added before the pathogen. When AP5 was added first, the average attachment change was 41% compared with 72% when added after V. alginolyticus, suggesting that the probiotic is displaced but that enhanced attachment of the pathogen does not occur. Conversely, when V. alginolyticus was added first, followed by AP5, attachment change was 37% while AP5 had 92% attachment change when added second. This implies that the pathogen was displaced by the candidate probiotic and therefore it appeared that, based on the ability of probiont AP5 to attach to mucus, the growth of the pathogen in the digestive tract might be suppressed by the candidate probiont's presence.

Notes: Low-angle inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the temperature and wave vector dependence of the spin waves in La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 perovskite-based colossal magnetoresistance material. At low q the spin waves show Heisenberg ferromagnetic dispersion (E=Dq2+Δ) where D is the spin stiffness, q is the wave vector, and Δ is the energy gap. However, the temperature renormalization of the spin stiffness D is anomalous, and as T increases toward Tc, D does not show the expected power law collapse, but rather exhibits a sudden sharp drop suggestive of a first-order phase transition. Detailed neutron measurements of the order parameter in zero applied field showed a similar first-order-like transition. However, no temperature hysteresis was observed in either D or in the magnetization. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of adding Cl impurity on the long-range antiferromagnetic coupling in [ZnTe|MnTe] magnetic semiconductor superlattices has been investigated by neutron diffraction. Superlattices consisting of five atomic planes of ZnTe alternated with ten atomic planes of MnTe[(ZnTe)5|(MnTe)10] have been prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy both with and without Cl added to the MnTe and/or ZnTe layers during deposition. This was motivated by the fact that Cl can form either shallow or deep donor levels in II–VI semiconductors, and that such electronic states can serve to modify magnetic interlayer exchange. Unchlorinated samples showed magnetic correlation lengths of around 225 Å ((approximate)5 bilayers) at low temperatures, and the addition of Cl increased the correlation length at 15 K by nearly a factor of 2 to approximately 450 Å. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This study describes the growth of juvenile clownfish, Amphiprion percula Lacépède 1802, fed with an artificial diet at six ration sizes of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12% of body mass per day (BM day−1) each at a feeding frequency of once, twice and three times per day. The effect of ration size on growth depended on the feeding frequency. In fish fed once a day growth did not improve above a ration size of 8% BM day−1. At two feedings per day fish required a ration size of at least 6% BM day−1 to achieve good growth, and fish fed three times per day grew at similar rates above a ration size of 4% BM day−1. A model to estimate the combined effect of ration size and feeding frequency is presented. The results lead to the suggestion of a simple length-based feeding regimen that could be tested in future studies on this species or adapted for use in other species.

Notes: Abstract: A nuclear resonance fluorescence experiment on 88Sr has been performed with bremsstrahlung of 6.7 MeV endpoint energy. The γ-ray linear polarisation has been measured with a EUROBALL CLUSTER detector used as a Compton polarimeter. The results indicate positive parity for the J= 1 state at 4.742 MeV in 88Sr, in contrast to the previous interpretation as a 1− two-phonon (2+ 1⊗ 3− 1) state and in conflict with the predictions of the quasiparticle-phonon model. On the basis of such calculations the 1+ state at 3.486 MeV may be considered as the 1+ 1 one-phonon state and the very strong 1+ 1→ 0+ 1 deexcitation as proton spin-flip 2p1/2→ 2p3/2 transition.

Notes: Abstract To simplify the weaning of clownfish Amphiprion percula from live food to artificial food, and to reduce the costs of feeding live food, three trials were undertaken to determine the best age for weaning. Twenty-nine-day-old post-hatch A. percula were weaned onto a fishmeal/caesin-based dry food which was an acceptable substitute for either Artemia or a moist food comprising Penaeus indicus and Donax serra. Larvae weaned 4 days after hatch (DAH) had lower survival than fish weaned 7 or 10 DAH. In juveniles weaned from 10 to 30 DAH good survival was obtained between 15 and 20 DAH suggesting that this is a suitable window for the weaning of this species.
