Notes: : Detection characteristics of perilla seeds exposed to electron beam doses of 0 to 2 kGy were investigated. DNA comet assay, photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) measurements, and hydrocarbon determinations by GC-MS were carried out. The irradiated samples showed comets with longer tails (152 ± 6 mm) than did nonirradiated samples (35 ± 11 mm). PSL values (photon counts) for the irradiated samples were more than 7865; whereas those of nonirradiated samples were less than 294. TL ratios (Glow 1/Glow 2) obtained from nonirradiated samples were less than 0.01 and above 0.48 from irradiated ones. The prominent radiation-induced hydrocarbons were 16:2, 16:3, 17:1, and 17:2, of which 16:2 was the most abundant.

Notes: Background Our previous study reported that more than 50% of toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-induced asthma patients had persistent asthmatic symptoms even after complete avoidance. Although specific IgE (sIgE) has been detected in a portion of patients with TDI-asthma, a recent investigation suggests that the presence of serum specific IgG (sIgG), not sIgE, is more closely associated with positive bronchoprovocation test (BPT) results. Objective To evaluate the possible role of sIgE and sIgG in predicting long-term prognosis of TDI-asthma.Materials and methods Forty-one TDI-asthma patients whose diagnosis was confirmed by TDI-BPT, and 20 unexposed healthy controls were enrolled. Both sIgE and sIgG to TDI-human serum albumin (HSA) conjugate were detected by ELISA. All patients with persistent asthmatic symptoms took anti-asthmatic medications during the follow-up period (mean: 67.5 months) and were instructed to avoid exposure to TDI. Airway hyper-responsiveness to methacholine (AHM) was monitored every year during the study period. The patients were classified into three groups according to changing patterns of AHM and asthmatic symptoms as follows: group I, no improvement with persistent asthmatic symptoms (n = 12); group II, partial improvement with persistent asthmatic symptoms (n = 13); group III, in remission (n = 16).Results Favourable prognosis was associated with a mild degree of AHM at initial diagnosis (P 〈 0.05). Although there were no significant differences in the prevalence of sIgE antibody to TDI-HSA conjugate among the three groups (P 〉 0.05), prevalence of sIgG in group I tended to be higher than in group II (0.05 〈 P 〈 0.1). However, the levels of sIgG were significantly higher in group I than in group II (P = 0.05), whereas levels of sIgE were significantly higher in group II than in group I (P = 0.014). No significant differences were noted in exposure duration, sex, age, atopic status, and total IgE level among the three groups (P 〉 0.05).Conclusion This study confirmed that a favourable outcome is related to a mild degree of AHM and to low levels of sIgG to predict persistent asthmatic symptoms, it also suggested that the presence of high serum-specific IgE at initial diagnosis may represent a better prognosis.

Notes: Background Recent investigations have demonstrated that spider mites are important allergens in the development of asthma in fruit-cultivating farmers. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitization rate to the citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) in children living in rural areas, and to determine the allergenic cross-reactivity with other mites. Methods A total of 7254 children (ages 7–15 years) living in rural areas were enrolled, and each subject was evaluated by a questionnaire and a skin prick test. Allergenic cross-reactivity was evaluated by ELISA inhibition tests. Results The most common sensitizing allergens were house dust mites, followed by citrus red mite and cockroach. High serum-specific IgE bindings to the citrus red mite were detected in 21 of 100 randomly selected subjects. The prevalence of asthma was higher among those with positive skin responses to the citrus red mite than with negative skin responses to this mite. ELISA inhibition tests showed that IgE bindings to this mite were minimally inhibited with additions of domestic mites. Conclusion Spider mites such as the citrus red mite may be important outdoor allergens among children living in rural areas, and spider mite-derived allergens have unique allergenic determinants compared with domestic mites.

Notes: Aims:  We evaluated the association between HMGI(Y) expression and the detection of malignant cells by simple reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and correlated the level of HMGI(Y) expression and the clinicopathological data in gastric cancer. Methods and results:  We analysed HMGI(Y) expression in 62 gastric cancer tissues and 28 normal gastric tissues by RT-PCR and immunohistochemical study. HMGI(Y) expression evidenced by RT-PCR was observed in 42 (67.7%) of 62 gastric cancer samples, whereas eight (28.6%) of 28 normal gastric tissues were positive (P = 0.001). In immunohistochemical staining for HMGI(Y), 48 (77.4%) of 62 gastric cancers were positive for HMGI(Y), whereas four (6.5%) of 62 normal gastric mucosae around the tumour were weakly positive, particularly in cells of some hyperplastic glands (P 〈 0.001). There was no significant correlation between the levels of HMGI(Y) expression and stage, tumour size, histological grade, invasion depth, or lymph node metastasis. Conclusions:  Our results suggest that HMGI(Y) expression could be associated with malignant phenotype in human gastric tissue, and that HMGI(Y) may contribute to gastric tumorigenesis.

Notes: Although the spreading behavior of liquid droplets impacting on solid surfaces has been extensively studied, the mechanism of recoiling which takes place after the droplet reaches its maximum spread diameter has not yet been fully understood. This paper reports the study of the recoiling behavior of different liquid droplets (water, ink, and silicone oil) on different solid surfaces (polycarbonate and silicon oxide). The droplet dynamics are experimentally studied using a high speed video system. Analytical methods using the variational principle, which were originated by Kendall and Rohsenow (MIT Technical Report 85694-100, 1978) and Bechtel et al. [IBM J. Res. Dev. 25, 963 (1981)], are modified to account for wetting and viscous effects. In our model, an empirically determined dissipation factor is used to estimate the viscous friction. It is shown that the model closely predicts the experimental results obtained for the varying dynamic impact conditions and wetting characteristics. This study shows that droplets recoil fast and vigorously when the Ohnesorge number decreases or the Weber number increases. Droplets with a large equilibrium contact angle are also found to recoil faster. Here the Ohnesorge number scales the resisting force to the recoiling motion, and is shown to play the most important role in characterizing the recoiling motion. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A linear perturbation theory is developed to investigate the interface instabilities of a radially-expanding, liquid jet in cylindrical geometries. The theory is applied to rapidly spreading droplets upon collision with solid surfaces as the fundamental mechanism behind splashing. The analysis is based on the observation that the instability of the liquid sheet, i.e., the formation of the fingers at the spreading front, develops in the extremely early stages of droplet impact. The shape evolution of the interface in the very early stages of spreading is numerically simulated based on the axisymmetric solutions obtained by a theoretical model. The effects that factors such as the transient profile of an interface radius, the perturbation onset time, and the Weber number have on the analysis results are examined. This study shows that a large impact inertia, associated with a high Weber number, promotes interface instability, and prefers high wave number for maximum instability. The numbers of fingers at the spreading front of droplets predicted by the model agree well with those experimentally observed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have fabricated a vertically aligned 4-domain nematic liquid crystal display cell with thin film transistor. Unlike the conventional method constructing 4-domain, i.e., protrusion and surrounding electrode which needs additional processes, in this study the pixel design forming 4-domain with interdigital electrodes is suggested. In the device, one pixel is divided into two parts. One part has a horizontal electric field in the vertical direction and the other part has a horizontal one in the horizontal direction. Such fields in the horizontal and vertical direction drive the liquid crystal director to tilt down in four directions. In this article, the electro-optic characteristics of cells with 2 and 4 domain have been studied. The device with 4 domain shows faster response time than normal twisted-nematic and in-plane switching cells, wide viewing angle with optical compensation film, and more stable color characteristics than 2-domain vertical alignment cell with similar structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A triode-type field emission display has been fabricated using carbon nanotube emitters. Purified single walled carbon nanotubes were selectively deposited onto a cathode electrode in a triode-type structure by an electrophoresis. Emission current was modulated with gate potentials of 100–300 V. A high brightness of 1000 cd/m2 with uniform emission was obtained at 900 V at the anode and 200 V at the gate. The fluctuation of emission current was found to be less than 5% in a fully sealed field emission display. Selective deposition of carbon nanotubes by electrophoresis shows high feasibility for triode-type field emission displays. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
