    Notes: Abstract 46,XY gonadal dysgenesis was diagnosed in a 5.5-year-old phenotypically female patient who had physical and somatic stigmata of Turner syndrome such as webbed neck, low hairline, widely spaced nipples, cubitus valgus and coarctation of the aorta. Bilateral streak gonads were removed and an unsuspected gonadoblastoma was found in right gonad. Conclusion The prepubertal development of gonadal neoplasm in patient with XY gonadal dysgenesis indicates the necessity of gonadectomy at the time of diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the histological effects of amniotic fluid on bone healing in the rabbit fetus. Fetal femurs (n=34) were fractured in the diaphysis and two experimental groups were established. In group A fetuses (n=18), the fracture ends were bathed in amniotic fluid through their unsutured skin wounds. In group B fetuses (n=16), the fracture sites were isolated from amniotic fluid by suturing the wound edges. Nonoperated fetuses were used as control group (n=9). The fetuses were sacrificed on the first, third and seventh postoperative days for histological studies. Histological examination of the specimens was performed to detect inflammation, fibroblastic proliferation, bone cellularity, callus and cartilage formation. The results were compared, using the Fisher exact chi square test criteria, where no statistically significant differences were detected between group A and group B ( P〉0.05).

    Notes: Abstract  In this study, a retrospective comparison between musculocutaneous and fasciocutaneous flaps in the treatment of trochanteric pressure sores was performed. From 1988 to 1996, 62 patients with 82 trochanteric pressure sores were treated surgically. The median age of the patients was 33.2 years with 50 males and 12 females, 20 patients had bilateral trochanteric pressure sores; 25 pressure sores were treated by musculocutaneous flaps and 57 with fasciocutaneous flaps. The comparative advantage of musculocutaneous and fasciocutaneous flaps in the surgical treatment of pressure sores is controversial. This study was performed to determine the ideal treatment modality. It showed that there was no significant difference in the recurrence rates.

    Notes: Abstract Hydatid cysts in the cervicofacial region are rare. We present an unusual case of a hydatid cyst found in the nape of a 66-year-old Turkish woman. There was no pulmonary or hepatic involvement. Excision of the cystic mass as definitive therapy was performed. The location of the lesion, diagnostic tests available and therapeutic approach are discussed and the literature reviewed.

    Notes: Abstract The radioactivity levels of Istanbul environs lignites were determined. The gamma-spectrometric technique has been used for the determination of activity levels of naturally occurring radionuclides 235+238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra and fallout radionuclides 137Cs in lignites taken from 7 different parts of Istanbul. Concentration of 238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra 137Cs and 235U were found up to 1.6 ppm, 1.7 ppm, 4.9 ppm, 56.8 Bq/kg, 34 Bq/kg, 1.8 Bq/kg, 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition total alpha- and beta-activity levels in lignite samples were found to be 7.6 and 15 eps, respectively.

    Notes: The thermal behavior of the Soret band relative to the carbonmonoxy derivatives of some β-chain mutant hemoglobins is studied in the temperature range 300-10 K and compared to that of wild-type carbonmonoxy hemoglobin. The band profile at various temperatures is modeled as a Voigt function that accounts for homogeneous broadening and for the coupling with high- and low-frequency vibrational modes, while inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account with a gaussian distribution of purely electronic transition frequencies. The various contributions to the overall bandwidth are singled out With this analysis and their temperature dependence, in turn, gives information on structural and dynamic properties of the system studied. In the wildtype and mutant hemoglobins, the values of homogeneous bandwidth and of the coupling constants to high-frequency vibrational modes are not modified with respect to natural human hemoglobin, thus indicating that the local electronic and vibrational properties of the heme-CO complex are not altered by the recombinant procedures. On the contrary, differences in the protein dynamic behavior are observed. The most relevant are those relative to the “polar isosteric” βVal-67(Ell) →Thr substitution, localized in the heme pocket, which results in decreased coupling with low-frequency modes and increased anharmonic motions. Mutations involving residue βLys-144(HC1) at the C-terminal and residue βCys-112(G14) at the α1β1 interface have a smaller effect consisting in an increased coupling with low-frequency modes. Mutations at the β-N-terminal and at the α1β2 interface have no effect on the dynamic properties of the heme pocket. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
