    Notes: Abstract We have previously shown that, after acute administration, antidepressant drugs exert anti-inflammatory actions in rats. In this study we evaluated the effects of 3 different doses of chlomipramine (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg i.p), and fluoxetine (5.0, 10, and 20 mg/kg i.p.) on subcutaneous carrageenin-induced inflammation. Both drugs dose-dependently reduced the inflammatory exudate, as well as the PGE2-like bio- and immuno-activity in the exudate. Chlomipramine dose-dependently reduced substance P concentrations in the exudate, whereas fluoxetine was effective only at the highest dose. Our results confirm that antidepressant drugs are able to reduce the development of inflammation in the rat and suggest that the inhibition of substance P production might play a role in mediating the anti-inflammatory effects of chlomipramine.

    Notes: Abstract  A recent model of formalin injection in the tail induced a facilitation of the hindpaw withdrawal reflexes. In the present work we tried, after injecting formalin into the tail of the albino rat, to determine the spontaneous activity and response changes of lumbar sciatic wide-dynamic-range neurons to thermal stimulations of the paw at 45°C and 48°C (the respective thresholds for noxious and non-noxious thermal stimuli). The experiments were carried out with multiple recording electrodes placed in a comb array in the lumbar segments of the spinal cord at L4–L6 level in the sciatic projection field. A significant facilitation of the spontaneous activity was already evident 2 min after injection; at 5 min there were strong facilitations to the thermal stimuli. Stimuli at 45°C, often ineffective prior to the formalin injection, became strongly excitatory. Stimuli at 48°C evoked more conspicuous responses. This facilitatory effect on spontaneous and thermal responses followed a time-course comparable to that described for the excitations seen after paw formalin injection, but the duration was more prolonged, lasting more than 2 h. These data indicate a facilitatory role of the formalin effects on spinal sciatic neurons after injection in the tail. It is proposed that the mutual effects of spinal neurons in distant spinal segments could explain the facilitation and such a time-course, and that a role in the development of prolonged pain could be envisaged.

    Notes: Within discrete kinetic theory, steady detonation wave solutions are here characterized for a reacting hydrogen-oxygen system. Using a suitable kinetic model, the so-called velocity problem is first solved, finding the von Neumann and equilibrium final states, as well as the intermediate states of partial reaction. On the basis of the sonic properties of the flow at the equilibrium final state, the boundary problem is treated in order to characterize the following flow connecting the final state to the rear boundary. Some numerical results of the detonation problem are provided for the two-way autocatalytic reactions OH+M(arrow-right-and-left)H+O+M. The Hugoniot diagram of the model is carried out; the profile of the pressure is drawn and the detonation wave thickness is represented for different detonation wave velocities. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A review of 4,500 angiograms yielded 11 patients with dissection of the vertebral arteries who had MRI and (in 4 patients) MR angiography (MRA) in the acute phase of stroke. One patient with incidental discovery at arteriography of asymptomatic vertebral artery dissection and two patients with acute strokes with MRI and MRA findings consistent with vertebral artery dissection were included. Dissection occurred after neck trauma or chiropractic manipulation in 4 patients and was spontaneous in 10. Dissection involved the extracranial vertebral artery in 9 patients, the extra-intracranial junction in 1, and the intracranial artery in 4. MRI demonstrated infarcts in the brain stem, cerebellum, thalamus or temporo-occipital regions in 7 patients with extra- or extra-intracranial dissections and a solitary lateral medullary infarct in 4 patients (3 with intracranial and 1 with extra-intracranial dissection). In 2 patients no brain abnormality related to vertebral artery dissection was found and in one MRI did not show subarachnoid haemorrhage revealed by CT. Intramural dissecting haematoma appeared as crescentic or rounded high signal on T1-weighted images in 10 patients examined 3–20 days after the onset of symptoms. The abnormal vessel stood out in the low signal cerebrospinal fluid in intracranial dissections, whereas it was more difficult to detect in extracranial dissections because of the intermediate-to-high signal of the normal perivascular structures and slow flow proximal and distal to the dissection. In two patients examined within 36 h of the onset, mural thickening was of intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal on spin-density and T2-weighted images. MRA showed abrupt stenosis in 2 patients and disappearance of flow signal at and distal to the dissection in 5. Follow-up arteriography, MRI or MRA showed findings consistent with occlusion of the dissected vessel in 6 of 8 patients.

    Notes: Abstract: Thirty-two children affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) were studied with serial measurements of bone mass for an average of 18 months, to evaluate the effects of long-term methotrexate (MTX) treatment on bone. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured on lumbar spine and total body. During MTX therapy some increase in BMD was observed, though this was smaller than in a control group of healthy children. Axial (spine and trunk) and appendicular (upper and lower limbs) BMD showed similar increases. BMD, either as an absolute value or as a percent variation from baseline, did not correlate with either MTX dose or length of therapy. In children treated also with corticosteroids, these drugs negatively influenced bone mass increase. The main determinant of absolute spine BMD value appeared to be weight, while height and lean mass seemed to be the determinants of total body BMD. Pubertal stage and disease activity significantly influenced the yearly change in BMD. In conclusion, our data suggest that long-term, low-dose therapy with MTX does not induce osteopenia in children with JRA.

This problem generalizes the (scalar) equilibrium problem and the vector variational inequality problem. Extending very recent results for these two special cases, the paper establishes existence of solutions for the unifying model, assuming that F is either a pseudomonotone or quasimonotone bifunction.
