Notes: Abstract In three patients with ileus CT showed a whirl sign in which the bowel and mesenteric folds encircled the superior mesenteric vein in a whirl-like pattern. Two patients were confirmed surgically to have small-bowel volvulus arising from postoperative adhesions. The whirl sign is useful in decision-making about the need for surgery. A CT examination should be performed for patients with ileus of unknown cause.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the roles of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), conventional US, CT, and MRI in differential diagnosis of gallbladder wall thickening. We scrutinized images for the presence of the multiple-layer patterns of the thickened gallbladder walls during preoperative images (EUS, n = 22; US, n = 23; CT, n = 20; MRI, n = 15) and retrospectively correlated them with surgical results in 25 patients. The pathological diagnoses included 7 gallbladder cancers, 9 cases of chronic cholecystitis, 5 cases of xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, and 4 cases of adenomyomatosis. Multiple-layer patterns of gallbladder wall were observed in patients with inflammatory and benign diseases by US, EUS, CT, and MRI. This pattern was demonstrated by EUS more efficiently compared with other means of imaging. All subjects with loss of multiple layers were finally diagnosed by use of EUS as having gallbladder cancer at surgery. Loss of multiple-layer patterns of the gallbladder wall demonstrated by EUS was the most specific finding in diagnosing gallbladder cancer.

Notes: Surimi was prepared with channel catfish mince recovered from fillet frames. The deboned meat was washed once, twice, or three times with water for surimi processing. Unwashed mince was also blended with cryoprotectants for surimi processing. Heat-induced gels were prepared using washed or unwashed catfish surimi with or without starch. Results indicated no differences (P〉0.05) in textural properties and Hunter color values due to number of washes in those gels prepared with washed surimi. Differences (P〈0.05) in proximate composition, textural properties and Hunter color values were found between gels prepared with washed and unwashed surimi.

Notes: 1. The depressor response to sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and the pressor response to Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) were investigated in anaesthetized and ganglion-blocked 6 week old (young) and 20 week old (adult) spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), and the results were compared with those in age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats.2. SNP produced a dose-dependent decrease of the mean blood pressure (BP) in both strains, and no differences in vascular sensitivity to SNP were observed between the strains.3. L-NAME caused dose-dependent pressor responses in both strains. The sensitivity and the maximal response to L-NAME in SHR were significantly greater than those in age-matched WKY (P 〈 0.05 or 0.01; t-test, 13d.f. in both ages). However, there were no significant differences in the responses between ages in each strain.4. Acute reduction of BP induced by 7-O-ethylfangchinoline did not affect the responses to SNP and L-NAME in the adult SHR.5. These results indicate that a greater amount of NO is tonically released in SHR and that its contribution to BP control is greater in SHR than in WKY, whereas vascular sensitivity to NO does not differ between the strains. In addition, acute changes in BP do not affect the degree of dependency on NO for BP control.

Notes: 1. The antihypertensive effects of 10 mg/kg trichloromethiazide (TCM), 10 mg/kg 7–O-ethylfangchinoline (7–O-EFC) and the combination of these drugs given orally once daily for 2 weeks were investigated by measuring the blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and activity in conscious, freely moving spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) fitted with a telemetry device.2. Clear diurnal rhythms of the HR and activity in synchrony with the light/dark cycle were observed during therapy, whereas the BP rhythm was obscure.3. Alone, TCM and 7–O-EFC produced slight and insignificant reductions of 24 h mean BP, whereas in combination they produced an additive and significant BP reduction, compared with the vehicle-treated controls, from the third day of therapy. The BP reduction induced by the combination of these drugs during the dark phase was more marked than that during the light phase.4. None of the drug therapies affected the HR and activity diurnal rhythms.5. The results of the present study demonstrate that the telemetry method is useful for monitoring the antihypertensive effects of drugs in SHR under physiological conditions with minimal stress.

Notes: 1. This study was undertaken to determine which (α1-adrenoceptor (AR) subtypes were involved in the activation of the femoral artery and the aorta by norepinephrine (NE) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).2. Negative log EC50 values and maximum responses of NE-induced contraction of the SHR femoral artery were unchanged and increased, respectively, compared with those of Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats.3. Contractile responses of the SHR aortas to NE were similar to those of the normotensive tissues.4. Schild plot data for cut-AR antagonists indicated that α1-AR in the aorta were predominantly α1H subtype. In the femoral artery, because Schild plots for bunazosin had slopes of less than 1.0, there were α1H (or α1C) and α1L subtypes.5. The α1-AR subtype in the aorta was essentially identical to the α1H subtype in the femoral artery. α1-AR subtypes mediating contraction in the SHR blood vessels were identical to those in the WKY tissues.

Notes: To measure the burn history in an inertial confinement fusion experiment, we have developed a new neutron detector based on plastic scintillation fibers. Twenty-five fiber scintillators were arranged in a geometry compensation configuration by which the time-of-flight difference of the neutrons is compensated by the transit time difference of light passing through the fibers. Each fiber scintillator is spliced individually to an ultraviolet optical fiber that is coupled to a streak camera. We have demonstrated a significant improvement of sensitivity compared with the usual bulk scintillator coupled to a bundle of the same ultraviolet fibers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To prepare a new diagnostic tool for the laser-imploded plasma, we have developed a time-resolved, two-dimensional monochromatic imaging system that consists of a pinhole array, a flat diffraction crystal, and an x-ray streak camera without cathode slit. We have successfully reconstructed time-resolved two-dimensional images of an Ar resonance line emitted from an imploded plastic shell filled with D2/Ar mixture gas. The current system provides the temporal resolution of ∼24 ps and the spatial resolution of ∼16 μm for the direction perpendicular to the spectral dispersion. The spatial resolution parallel to the spectral dispersion is ≤27 μm, that depends on the crystal broadening and the spectral linewidth. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There have been few reports on hypersensitivity to chironomid midges in bronchial asthmatic patients around the area of hypereutrophic natural lakes, which have been notorious as an environmental hazard due to the massive occurrence of adult chironomids during several periods of the year. Our study investigated IgE antibodies to chironomid midges in bronchial asthmatic patients around the Lake Suwa area in comparison with those of the Matsumoto area (control area). A total of 123 adult patients with bronchial asthma were investigated by measurement of IgE antibodies with extracts of three chironomid midges (Chironomus yoshimatsui, C. plumosus, and Tokunagayusurika akamusi), mite, and silkworm. In addition, in the allergy testing, 12 common inhalant antigens were used. Of 123 adult patients with bronchial asthma, 65 (52.8%) produced positive allergy tests. Thirty-three (50.8%) were positive to mite, 28 (43.1%) to silkworm, 11 (16.9%) to C. yoshimatsui, eight (12.3%) to C. plumosus, and three (4.6%) to T. akamusi. We compared our results with the previous reports. The number of positive tests to silkworm in the Lake Suwa area was higher than in other areas. However, C. plumosus and T. akamusi showed a lower number of positive reactions. We considered the lower positive number of C. plumosus and T. akamusi tests in the Lake Suwa area to be related to the advanced age of patients in this area. The chironomids are an important cause of asthma, together with mite and silkworm, in the Lake Suwa area, but affect old asthmatic patients less than asthmatic children.

Notes: Abstract Monodisperse, reactive hydrogel microspheres were prepared by precipitation polymerization ofp-nitrophenyl acrylate (NPA) with acrylamide, methacrylic acid, and methylenebisacrylamide in ethanol. The size of microspheres was controlled by the monomer ratio. Some fraction of reactive ester decomposed during the polymerization. The reactive hydrogel microspheres were converted to amphoteric ones by the reaction of NPA units with diamine. The isoelectric point of the amphoteric microspheres was around 4.0, but it was different from the pH at which the microspheres have the minimum size or the most shrunken state. This was attributed to the uneven distribution of induced amine groups.
