Notes: Abstract Proximal straight tubules (PST) were dissected from rabbit kidneys, held by crimping pipettes in a chamber and bathed in a buffered isosmotic (295 mOsm/kg) solution containing 200 mm mannitol (MBS). Changes in tubule diameter were monitored on line with an inverted microscope, TV camera and image processor. The PST were then challenged for 20 sec with MBS made 35 mOsm/kg hyperosmotic by addition of either NaCl, KCl, mannitol (M), glycerol (G), ethylene glycol (E), glycine (g), urea (U), acetamide (A) or formamide (F). With NaCl, KCl, M, G, E, g, U, and A, tubules shrunk osmometrically within 0.5 sec and remained shrunk for as long as 20 sec without recovering their original volume (sometimes A showed some recovery). PST barely shrunk with F and quickly recovered their original volume. The permeability coefficients were 0 μm/sec (NaCl, M, g, E and U), 1 μm/sec (A), 84 μm/sec (F) and 0.02 μm/sec (G). The reflection coefficients σ = 1.0 (NaCl, KCl, M, G, E, g and U), 0.95 (A) and 0.62 (F). Similar σ values were obtained by substituting 200 mOsm/kg M in MBS by either NaCl, KCl, G, E, g, U, a or F. The olive oil/water partition coefficients are 5 (M), 15 (U), 85 (A) and 75 (F) (all x10−5). Thus, part of F permeates the cell membrane through the lipid bilayer. The probing molecules van der Waals diameters are 7.4×8.2×12.0 (M), 3.6×5.2×5.4 (U), 3.8×5.2 ×5.4 (A) and (3.4×4.5×5.4 (F) Å. We conclude that only F clearly permeates the water channel (WCH). Water molecules must single file within the WCH. After subtraction of the bilayer permeability of the probes, we estimate for the WCH selectivity filter cross-section a diameter of 4.2–4.7 Å (if it is circular) and 3.6×4.2 Å (if it is rectangular). But if the oxygens facing the WCH lumen H bond with the molecules crossing the WCH, the WCH selectivity filter would be 3.3–3.8 Å (circular) and 3.6×4.0 Å (rectangular).

Notes: Abstract An analytical method was developed for the determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in the presence of trimethoprim (TMP) by normal fluorescence. When both analytes are present a selective derivatization with fluorescamine of SMZ gives an intense fluorescent derivative with no interference from the other compound. The reaction was optimized to obtain the best analytical performance. The detection limit and the lower limit of quantitation of SMZ in the reaction medium was 5.2 ng/mL. The intra-day precision (relative standard deviation) was 1.51% for a 100 ng/mL SMZ standard solution and the inter-day precision over 7 days for a 100 ng/mL solution in the presence of 20 ng/mL TMP solution was 2.5%. The method has been applied to three pharmaceutical preparations containing both compounds, without any separation steps required.

Notes: Abstract. Laser surface alloying by the powder feed method of the iron based superalloy Incoloy 800H with aluminium has been carried out. The effects of different preparation parameters, like laser scan speed and powder feed rate, on the morphology of the alloyed zone have been investigated. Microstructure and composition have been determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Three different phases with different Al-content have been distinguished. The observed Al-enrichment at the surface, the presence of Ni-Al and Fe-Al intermetallic compounds, and the considerable grain refining of the alloyed zone with respect to the substrate, make this surface modification technique a very good method to improve the corrosion behaviour of the Incoloy 800H superalloy.

Notes: Summary 63 medium and large incisional hernias were repaired by the Rives method. A multifilament polypropylene mesh was used in all cases. The mesh was fixed to the abdominal aponeurosis with interrupted non-absorbable polypropylene stitches. There was no mortality. The recurrence rate was 1,5% (1 patient) after a median follow-up of 30 months although a high incidence of postoperative pain (17%) in the Spiegelian area was found during the first year. Based on these results we propose this technique for the repair of incisional hernias perhaps also with the use of long-lasting absorbable sutures or a biological glue. These procedures enhance attachment of the mesh to the abdominal wall and thus relieve pain in the lateral abdominal region.

Notes: Summary Appendectomy is a very frequent cause of incisional hernia. In this paper the rate of recurrence after the hernia repair by simple suture and mesh repair was studied. 17 lateral incisional hernias secondary to appendectomy were repaired over a 9 year period. Prosthetic repair was carried out in 9 cases and primary closure in the remaining 8 cases. All the patients were followed over a period that ranged from 1 to 8 years (mean 5.6 years). There was one recurrence, though 2 patients (11.7%) with mesh repair complained about abdominal pain during the first postoperative year. The study concludes that both techniques can be successfully implemented if the correct indications based on the extent of the defect and the clinical characteristics of the patient are respected.

Notes: Abstract A simple, rapid and reproducible method for the determination of some pesticide residues in water was developed using micro liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM). The chlorinated insecticides α- and β-endosulfan and endosulfan-sulfate as well as the synthetic pyrethroids bifenthrin, permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate and deltamethrin can be separated from a 500 mL sample water extracted with 0.5 mL of n-hexane containing anthracene-d10 as internal standard without clean-up in only 13 min. The recovery efficiencies of the tested compounds yielded more than 93.0% at a fortification level of 5 ng mL–1 and their relative standard deviations were between 1.9 and 11.7%. Detection limit of each compound ranged between 3 and 35 pg mL–1. The method was applied to ground, sea and tap waters from Almería (Spain). The solubilities in water at 20° C were determined.

Notes: Abstract A method for the determination of the fungicide thiabendazole (TBZ) by micellar-stabilized room-temperature phosphorescence is described. It does not require any separation step and allows the direct determination of the fungicide in canned pineapple samples. The effect of various experimental conditions is discussed in detail. The analytical curve of thiabendazole gives a linear dynamic range of 23.8–500.0 ng mL–1 and a detection limit of 23.8 ng mL–1. Recoveries of 103.9 and 89.2% for syrup and canned pineapple pulp, respectively, were obtained for 250 ng mL–1 thiabendazole.

Notes: Abstract An atrazine flow-through fluoroimmunosensor was developed, based on an oriented antibody covalently bound to Protein-A (Prot-A) immobilized on Controlled Pore Glass (CPG). Atrazine was detected “in-situ” by placing the immobilized antibody in the optical path of the flow cell. Immobilization of 30 μg of polyclonal anti-atrazine antibody on 0.5 g of Prot-A-CPG provided the highest sensitivity. The effect of several solvents on the covalently immobilized antibodies regeneration was evaluated, the optimum conditions being achieved by pumping 5% acetonitrile (pH = 3) at 0.15 mL/min for 100 s. The detection limit of the immunosensor was 0.7 μg/L and the reproducibility was 2% and 4% for 5 μg/L and 40 μg/L, respectively, in the optimum working concentration range (0.7–50 μg/L). This device allowed 12 samples per hour to be analyzed and had a life-time of 200 assays. Simazine and desisopropylatrazine (DIA) were not cross-reactive, desethylatrazine (DEA) has a cross-reactivity of 8% and propazine and prometryn of 44% and 27%, respectively. The immunosensor was applied to the determination of atrazine in tap and ground water samples spiked at the ¶10 and 30 μg/L concentration level.
