Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: In an attempt to study the pathogenesis of mucosal hypersensitivity in allergic rhinitis, we investigated the suppressive effects of cyclosporin A (CyA) and glucocorticosteroids on ovalbumin (OA)-induced hypersensitivity to topical histamine challenge.¶Materials: Actively sensitized Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs.¶Treatment: OA and alum were applied to guinea pigs intraperitoneally 3 times at two-week intervals. After general sensitization, OA inhalation was performed every day for 6 days as topical sensitization. Before inhalation, treatment with CyA (50 mg/kg, p.o.), glucocorticosteroids (beclomethasone propionate (1.0 mg/kg, i.p.), fluticasone propionate (FP, 0.5 mg/kg, i.p.)) or vehicle were performed, and the sensitivity to histamine was measured before and after the inhalation. Moreover, in actively (general and topical) sensitized guinea pigs, FP (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) was applied every day for 5 days and histamine sensitivity was evaluated before and after the application.¶Results: We found that histamine sensitivity was significantly increased by nasal antigen challenge in this guinea pig model, and that the occurrence of histamine hypersensitivity was inhibited by the pretreatment with CyA and glucocorticosteroids. Although multiple administration of FP gradually reduced the histamine hypersensitivity according to the period of administration, it did not significantly alter the histamine hypersensitivity after the occurrence of hypersensitivity.¶Conclusion: It is concluded that CyA and glucocorticosteroids suppress antigen-induced histamine hypersensitivity in a guinea pig model of allergic rhinitis.

Notes: Abstract New lines are observed in the infrared spectrum of a crystal due to unit-cell doubling at a spin-Peierls transition (in NaV2O5). The change in the shape of the spectral lines at the spin-Peierls transition is recorded. A contour characteristic of a Fano resonance is observed above the transition temperature T sp and the standard symmetric contour is observed below T sp . We attribute this effect to the opening of a gap in the magnetic-excitation spectrum at the spin-Peierls transition.

Notes: Abstract We have measured far infrared reflectance and transmittance spectra as well as Raman scattering spectra of α′-NaV2O5 single crystals for all the principal polarizations. The temperature range above the phase transition temperature T c =35 K was investigated, mainly. On the basis of this experimental study and of the lattice dynamics calculations we conclude that the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high-temperature phase is described by the centrosymmetric D 2h 13 space group. This conclusion leads to important physical consequences concerning the interpretation of one-dimensional magnetic properties of NaV2O5 and of the phase transition at 35 K considered earlier to be an ordinary spin-Peierls transition. The assignment of the observed phonons is given. Values of dielectric constants are obtained from the infrared data. Asymmetric shapes of several infrared lines and higher-order infrared vibrational spectra are discussed. The crystal field energy levels of the 3d electron localized at the V4+ site have been calculated in the framework of the exchange charge model using the values of effective charges obtained from the lattice dynamics calculations. According to the results of these calculations, the broad optical bands observed earlier in the vinicity of 1 eV can be interpreted as phonon assisted d-d transitions.

Notes: Escaping energetic ions have been measured with a scintillator-based probe which can provide both information of pitch angle and gyroradius of detected ions in compact helical system. The measurement was started in February 1997. It was confirmed that output signals are due to neutral beam-injected fast ions. A Lorentz orbit code was developed and fast ion orbits reaching the probe were computed to understand the loss process of detected ions. Birthplace and initial pitch angle of fast ions were calculated by a Monte Carlo beam deposition code HFREYA. From the comparison between pitch angle variation of computed fast ion orbits and pitch angle distribution of birth fast ions, it turns out that fast ions whose birthplace is in the core region cannot reach the detection point directly. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An efficient neutron diagnostic system has been established and applied to deuterium experiments on compact helical system. A neutron counter was installed at the center of the torus, and the detection efficiency was about two orders of magnitude higher than the values of most toroidal fusion devices. The effect of the stray magnetic field on the operation of a proportional counter was experimentally confirmed to be negligibly small. The ion temperature, as low as 400 eV, was obtained from neutron measurement with a time resolution of 1 ms. The decay time of neutron emission rate after the termination of a 1% deuterium-doped beam was measured and the confinement time of neutral beam-injected fast ions was estimated. The fast ion confinement was clearly improved by strengthening the toroidal magnetic field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two natural diamond detectors (NDDs) operating at room temperature were used for Fusion Neutronics Source (FNS) deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron spectra measurements at different points around the tritium target and for different deuteron beam energies. Energy resolution of both NDDs were measured, with values 1.95% and 2.8%. Due to the higher energy resolution of one of the two NDDs studied it was possible to measure the shape of the DT neutron energy distribution and its broadening due to deuteron scattering inside the target. The influence of pulse pileup on the energy resolution of the combined system (NDD+electronics) at count rates up to 3.8×105 counts/s was investigated. A 3.58% energy resolution for the spectrometric system based on NDD and a 0.25 μs shaping time amplifier has been measured at a count rate of 5.7×105 counts/s. It is shown that special development of a fast pulse signal processor is necessary for NDD based spectrometry at count rates of approximately 106 counts/s. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A calibration experiment of the neutron counters of the Compact Helical System (CHS) has been carried out in order to determine the calibration factor which relates the neutron-counter output to the extended neutron source of a torus plasma. The instruments employed in the present experiment include a BF3 proportional counter, a 3He proportional counter, an NE213 organic liquid scintillator. The BF3 counter was installed at the center of the CHS torus and the other two detectors were installed outside the torus. A total of 64 toroidal angles along the magnetic axis of plasma were surveyed by the movement of a 252Cf neutron source. The poloidal cross section of the CHS plasma is elliptical in shape and rotates toroidally with the same period as that of the helical coil. The spatial distribution of 25 local point efficiencies in three poloidal cross sections with elongated orientations of 0°, 45°, and 90° were investigated in order to determine the influence of the plasma profile on the calibration factor. The shadow and scattering effects were clearly observed by the center counter when the source was located behind the helical coil. The calibration factor for the BF3 counter, obtained by averaging the point efficiencies over all the toroidal angles, was 3.6×10−4 counts per neutron, about several ten times greater than those of the counters located outside the torus. Details of the calibration setup and the analysis of experimental results are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  A 60-year-old women was admitted to our hospital with deteriorating congestive heart failure. Although the diagnosis of active myocarditis was confirmed by right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy, this patient died of refractory heart failure during corticosteroid treatment. Numerous lymphocytic clusters were observed microscopically in the heart at autopsy. Most of the infiltrating cells in the clusters were positive for CD 8, HAM 56 or MHC class 2 antigen; few cells were positive for CD 56. Expression of perforin was found in some of the infiltrating cells. Electron microscopic examination revealed small lymphocytes adhering to the surface of injured cardiac myocytes. Close contact of these lymphocytes to macrophages was shown in the clusters. ICAM-1 and MHC class 1 antigens were strongly expressed in the cardiac tissue. These results indicate that cytotoxic T lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity had continued to operate during immunosuppressive therapy. Corticosteroids may not be suitable for the treatment of chronic active myocarditis when persistent expression of ICAM-1 is observed.

Notes: Abstract  Current records from three surveys at Bora Bay, Miyako Island, all showed strong unidirectional flows. Ocean water entered the lagoon over the shallower western half of the reef flat and exited the lagoon through a channel on the eastern side. Fourier transform of one of the survey data sets showed that this unidirectional flow is modulated on a cycle with a period half as long as the dominant M2 tidal cycle. The prominent features of the observed time-series current profiles were well reproduced using a numerical simulation that includes a depth dependent formulation of the wind-wave forced cross-reef water flow. The water residence times of the lagoon varied from 1.5 h to 3.7 h when calculated directly from the modeled current field, and from 2.0 h to 9.3 h when calculated as the time required for modeled particles to exit the lagoon. These residence times are surprisingly short and may help to explain how this reef supports high net organic production. Furthermore, the short particle residence times show the importance of analyzing currents on time scales smaller than the dominant tidal cycle to understand the fate of organic material produced in coral reefs.

Notes: Abstract VRK1 is a novel human putative serine/threonine kinase, and is located on chromosome 14 at band q32 where an autosomal recessive congenital microphthalmia (CMIC) is mapped. We isolated a polymorphic dinucleotide CA repeat marker from a genomic clone containing the human VRK1 gene. This polymorphism will be useful in genetic studies of disorders localized at the 14q32 region, such as CMIC.
