Notes: In surface resistance measurement of high Tc superconducting (HTS) thin films, the conventional resonant perturbation methods have large uncertainties, because their calibrators usually have much larger surface resistance than HTS thin films. This article describes a new type of calibrator, mirror-image calibrator: when the open end of a dielectric resonator is connected to its mirror image, the resonant frequency and quality factor of the resonator are equal to those of the dielectric resonator when its open end is shorted by a perfect conductor. This principle is applied to modify the dielectric resonator method in surface resistance measurement of HTS thin films. The structures of the dielectric resonator for surface resistance measurement (Rs probe) and its mirror-image calibrator are explained in detail. Comparison is made between the present technique and the conventional perturbation technique, and results show that the accuracy and sensitivity of the resonant perturbation method are greatly improved by using the mirror-image calibrator. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Doping techniques are of great importance in developing new materials and devices. We present here a novel approach for doping impurity in thin film by using dual-beam pulsed-laser deposition technique that allows in situ controlling doping under a wide range of conditions. We demonstrated doping Ag in situ in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films and for the first time observed long bar-like Ag structures with a length up to 150 μm in the as-deposited films, which may have important application in the fabrication of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junctions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Barium hexaferrite (BaM) thin films were deposited on (0001) LiTaO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Effects of the substrate temperature and oxygen gas pressure on the formation and quality of these films were studied. Films deposited at a substrate temperature of 800 °C and an oxygen pressure around 0.23 mbar showed the best c axis normal to the film plane with locked in-plane orientation. The saturation magnetization Ms and anisotropy field Ha measured by vibrating sample magnetometer were almost the same as those reported on bulk barium ferrite. Decreasing oxygen pressure hinders the formation of the Ba layer in BaM magnetoplumbite structure and gives rise to the spinel phase, which greatly decreases coercivity Hc of the films and finally destroys the whole BaM structure. Effects of the lattice mismatch and substrate-induced strains on the film structure were also studied. It was found that barium ferrite thin films grown on LiTaO3 substrates tend to choose a matching mode with compressional strains rather than shear strains. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Epitaxial LaNiO3 (LNO) thin films were grown on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by laser molecular-beam epitaxy. The growth process of the LNO films was monitored by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Clear RHEED patterns and the intensity oscillation of RHEED were observed during the epitaxial growth process. The morphology of the films was studied by atomic force microscopy. The results show that the films grown by this method have a nanoscale smooth surface with the root-mean-square surface roughness smaller than 7 nm on an area of 1×1 μm2. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the crystalline LNO films exhibited preferred (00l) orientation. The resistivity of the thin film is 0.28 mΩ cm at 278 K and 0.06 mΩ cm at 80 K, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The contrast ratio of reflective bistable twisted nematic displays are optimized by means of a parameter space approach. By plotting the contrast ratio as a function of the twist angle and thickness-birefringence product of the display, the regions where the display shows the best contrast ratio are clearly shown. Both the absolute reflectance and wavelength dispersion of two bistable twisted states are investigated. It is confirmed that high contrast ratio of over 100 and reflectance of 100% with polarized light input are possible for such reflectance bistable displays. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The ac susceptibility (ACS) of an YBa2Cu3O thin film in a perpendicular ac magnetic field (Ha) from 0.22 to 30.8 G is measured as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence of the real (χ′) and imaginary (χ′′) parts of the ACS for various Ha can be well scaled onto a single curve using the peak value (χp″) and temperature (Tp) of χ′′(T) as the scaling parameters. The scaling law suggests that the critical state can be established only below Tp. Above Tp, the ACS is determined by the screening effect of the film due to the sharp decrease of its resistance. Below Tp, the scaling behavior is in agreement with the theoretical approaches based on the critical state model, only if the temperature for zero critical current density is related to the irreversibility temperature Tirr rather than Tc. From the scaling law, we found that Tirr=Tp. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The genes encoding the ApaLI (5′-G^TGCAC-3′), NspI (5′-RCATG^Y-3′), NspHI (5′-RCATG^Y-3′), SacI (5′-GAGCT^C-3′), SapI (5′-GCTCTTCN1^-3′, 5′-^N4GAAGAGC-3′) and ScaI (5′-AGT^ACT-3′) restriction-modification systems have been cloned in E.␣coli. Amino acid sequence comparison of M.ApaLI, M.NspI, M.NspHI, and M.SacI with known methylases indicated that they contain the ten conserved motifs characteristic of C5 cytosine methylases. NspI and NspHI restriction-modification systems are highly homologous in amino acid sequence. The C-termini of the NspI and NlaIII (5′-CATG-3′) restriction endonucleases share significant similarity. 5mC modification of the internal C in a SacI site renders it resistant to SacI digestion. External 5mC modification of a SacI site has no effect on SacI digestion. N4mC modification of the second base in the sequence 5′-GCTCTTC-3′ blocks SapI digestion. N4mC modification of the other cytosines in the SapI site does not affect SapI digestion. N4mC modification of ScaI site blocks ScaI digetion. A DNA invertase homolog was found adjacent to the ApaLI restriction-modification system. A DNA transposase subunit homolog was found upstream of the SapI restriction endonuclease gene.

Notes: Abstract AvaI andBsoBI restriction endonucleases are isoschizomers which recognize the symmetric sequence 5′CYCGRG3′ and cleave between the first C and second Y to generate a four-base 5′ extension. TheAvaI restriction endonuclease gene (avaIR) and methylase gene (avaIM) were cloned intoEscherichia coli by the methylase selection method. TheBsoBI restriction endonuclease gene (bsoBIR) and part of theBsoBI methylase gene (bsoBIM) were cloned by the “endo-blue” method (SOS induction assay), and the remainder ofbsoBIM was cloned by inverse PCR. The nucleotide sequences of the two restriction-modification (RM) systems were determined. Comparisons of the predicted amino acid sequences indicated thatAvaI andBsoBI endonucleases share 55% identity, whereas the two methylases share 41% identity. Although the two systems show similarity in protein sequence, their gene organization differs. TheavaIM gene precedesavaIR in theAvaI RM system, while thebsoBIR gene is located upstream ofbsoBIM in theBsoBI RM system. BothAvaI andBsoBI methylases contain motifs conserved among the N4 cytosine methylases.

Notes: Abstract  A genetic model is proposed for the analysis of embryo and endosperm effects as well as GE interaction effects. An investigation of three malting quality traits in grains of seven parents and their F2s was undertaken in a half-diallel cross of barley (Hordeum distichum L.) over 2 years. The results indicated that the malt Kolbach index (KI), alpha-amylase activity (αAA) and wort soluble nitrogen (Wort-N) are controlled by both embryo genetic effects and endosperm genetic effects. Variance of the endosperm additive effects was obviously larger than that of the embryo additive effects. In the contribution of the embryo genetic effects to variation in malt αAA and Wort-N, the dominance effects were considerably larger than the additive effects. The endosperm dominance effects constituted a major part of the total genetic effect on the KI. Significant endosperm GE interactions were also detected in the malt traits concerned. Endosperm general heritability (h 2 e ) tended to be larger than interaction heritability (h 2 oE or h 2 eE ) for all the traits. Endosperm heterosis was observed to be significantly positive for αAA but negative for Wort-N in the F2 seed generation. Prediction of main gene effects for seven parents showed that ‘Ganmu 2’ and ‘Supi1’ were suitable parental varieties for malt αAA and Wort-N improvement. Our genetic model for malting quality traits and its application in breeding are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Thirty married couples evaluated the Reality female condom on questionnaires about its acceptability for 300 acts of coitus (10 per couple). An analysis of the summary questionnaires showed: 90% of couples considered the female condom an acceptable method and 87% felt it was a good contraceptive device; the majority of couples (87%) found it easy to use; and 80% of females and 73% of males reported that, in comparison with the male condom, the effect on sexual pleasure was either improved or no different. A little more than half of the couples (55%) preferred it to male condoms. To look at the learning curve effect, an additional analysis was completed by pooling the first 5 applications of each user and comparing the results with the pooled results of the second 5 uses. All the findings suggest that a certain proportion of couples of child-bearing age will choose the Reality female condom for contraception if it enters into the Chinese market. As a new contraceptive barrier device, the female condom may require a certain amount of education and awareness before it will be fully recognized as an important option to help prevent pregnancy as well as sexually transmitted infections.
