    Notes: Abstract Background: The purpose of the present study was to describe the various imaging features of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the liver, a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin. Methods: Sonography (n= 5), computed tomography (CT; n= 5), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (n= 2), and hepatic arteriography (n= 3) in five patients who underwent partial hepatectomy for tumor resection were retrospectively reviewed and correlated with pathologic findings. Results: All tumors were clearly demarcated from surrounding hepatic parenchyma in sectional imaging with (n= 2) or without (n= 3) a fibrous capsule, which was pathologically verified. Internal architecture of abundant fibrosis, myxoid degeneration, and/or hemorrhagic necrosis reflected the sonographic, CT and MR imaging findings. Marginal tumor staining without definite tumor vasculature was the main feature of hepatic arteriography. There was no intratumoral calcification. All three tumors involving the right lobe of the liver invaded the right hemidiaphragm. Conclusion: Although there were no unique findings of primary hepatic MFH, a combined interpretation of various imaging modalities may elucidate the malignant nature of the tumor.

    Notes: Abstract Background: To investigate radiologic and pathological features of intestinal tuberculosis with abdominal complications. Methods: Twenty-two patients with 23 surgically proven complications (nine intestinal obstructions, eight perforations, three fistulae, and three intestinal bleeds) were analyzed. Medical records, radiologic studies, and pathologic examinations were reviewed with special emphasis on searching for the common features in each group of complication. Results: The most important single feature in seven of the nine patients with intestinal obstruction was the presence of stricture. In the remaining two patients, bowel adhesion was a primary cause of obstruction. In eight patients with intestinal perforation, both obstruction and ulcerations in the dilated proximal loop were the important features in six, and multiple deep ulcerations without obstruction was a primary cause in the remaining two. The common features in three patients with fistulae were focal or multiple strictures, severe adhesions, and fibrotic bowel wall. Intestinal bleeding originated from diffuse mucosal ulcerations. The abdominal complications occurred during antituberculous therapy in 10 of the 22 patients. Conclusion: Understanding the radiologic and pathologic features of intestinal tuberculosis with complications help in making an appropriate clinical decision for the treatment strategy. Close observation is necessary, especially in those patients who are acutely ill during antituberculous medical therapy.

    Notes: Abstract Background: To evaluate the computed tomographic (CT) features of colonic wall thickening in cirrhotic patients and to determine their prognostic value. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 28 cirrhotic patients with colonic wall thickening (≥10 mm) on CT. Twenty-six of the 28 patients had hepatocellular carcinoma. The severity of hepatic dysfunction was determined by using the Child–Pugh classification. We analyzed the patterns of bowel wall thickening and degree of portal hypertension on CT and the survival periods after initial CT detection of colonic wall thickening. Results: The involved segment of the colon was diffusely thickened with either scalloped or nodular circumferential configuration. In all patients, the thickened colonic wall enhanced poorly. Although the ascending colon was involved in all patients, the transverse (n= 14) or descending (n= 5) colon was also simultaneously involved. Most patients exhibited an advanced stage of portal hypertension on CT. The median survival period of 25 patients who expired was 34 days, and 21 patients (84%) expired within 3 months. Conclusions: Colonic wall thickening on CT can be used as one of the indicators of poor prognosis in cirrhotic patients. Advanced liver cirrhosis with significantly severe dysfunction is the likely cause of mortality. Therefore, a less aggressive therapeutic approach is recommended if hepatocellular carcinoma is coexistent in these patients.

    Notes: A retrospective analysis of long-term efficacy of percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the trigeminal ganglion or root for the relief of trigeminal neuralgia was carried out in our unit. From the medical records and questionnaires, outcomes of 108 procedures performed in 81 patients from January 1986 to December 1990 were obtained with a follow-up period of 6–11 years. The initial success rate was 87% and the probability of remaining pain-free 1, 2 and 11 years after the procedure was 65, 49 and 26%, respectively. Patients with typical symptoms had a better long-term efficacy than those with atypical presentations, and patients who had not undergone a previous surgical procedure also had a better outcome. There was no mortality in this series. Common adverse effects included dysaesthesia in 20 patients, corneal numbness in 12 patients and masseter weakness in three patients.

    Notes: The prior assessment equations for Ct , which is a well-known fracture parameter for characterizing creep and creep–fatigue crack growth rates, have applicability to constant loading conditions only. However, crack growth due to creep can also occur under varying load conditions during a fatigue cycle when the loading (or unloading) rate is slow enough such that creep deformation can occur near the crack tip. Hence, the applicability of the Ct parameter should be extended to varying load conditions.In this study, a method of extending the use of the Ct parameter to increasing load conditions is proposed. Based on the concept of Irwin’s effective crack size, new equations for estimating Ct under increasing load conditions are derived and denoted as (Ct )r . Finite element analyses were also performed under various increasing load conditions. From the analysis, the variation of (Ct )r values during the load rise period is obtained and the difference between the (Ct )r value at the end of the load rise period and the Ct value at the beginning of the succeeding load hold period is discussed. A generalized creep–fatigue crack growth model which employs (Ct )r as a parameter characterizing crack growth rate during the rise time is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract— Fatigue tests were carried out to study the growth and coalescence behaviour of multi-surface cracks which were initiated at semi-circular surface notches, and an existing crack growth simulation program was developed to predict and compare with the experimental results. Additional comparisons with ASME and BSI conditions were also carried out to enhance the reliance and integrity of structures and machine elements. The results presented in this paper show that the simulation procedure has utility for fatigue life prediction.

    Notes: Abstract CuInSe2 thin films have been prepared by high Se vapor selenization of co-sputtered Cu–In alloy precursors within a partially closed graphite container. Cu–In alloys with different compositions were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the films showed mainly CuIn2 and Cu11In9 phases and the Cu11In9 peak intensity was found to increase as the alloy composition tended towards Cu-rich. A linear dependence of the alloy composition on the Cu/In deposition power was observed from energy dispersive analysis by X-rays (EDX). A three-fold volume expansion was exhibited by all the CuInSe2 films after selenization at 500–550 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the films showed large and densely packed crystal structures with sizes above 5 μm. The CuInSe2 films exhibited single phase chalcopyrite structure with preferential orientation in the (1 1 2) direction. The EDX composition analyses of the films showed Cu/In ratio ranging from 0.43 to 1.2, and Se/(Cu+In) ratios from 0.92 to 1.47. The measured film resistivities varied from 10-1 to 105 Ωcm. The Cu–In alloy precursors with Cu/In ratio less than 0.70 were found to form CuIn3Se5 a defect chalcopyrite compound. All films were Se rich, with the exception of samples with very high Cu content.© 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Summary.  The antigenic variability of the 15 kD nucleocapsid protein of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus was characterized with a panel of 24 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against the American PRRS virus isolate ISU-P. Five continuous epitopes designated EpORF7-A through E were revealed by the reactivity pattern of these MAbs with 67 American field isolates, two modified-live vaccine viruses, and the European Lelystad virus as determined by the indirect immnofluorescence assay and Western immunoblotting and confirmed by additivity and blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The reactivity pattern of isolates in the IFA permitted their subdivision into 4 American antigenic groups which represented 84.1, 11.6, 2.9 and 1.4% of viruses tested. The antigenic variation among isolates was correlated to single, group specific nucleotide substitutions and mediated by a combination of at least 4 of the 5 epitopes. EpORF7-A was conserved in all American isolates and the Lelystad virus which constituted a separate antigenic group. Consequently, monoclonal antibodies specific for EpORF7-A may prove useful as the antigenic basis for a universal diagnostic test for the PRRS virus. EpORF7-C, D and E were only present in the American isolates tested.
