    Notes: Abstract Background: To evaluate the computed tomographic (CT) features of colonic wall thickening in cirrhotic patients and to determine their prognostic value. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 28 cirrhotic patients with colonic wall thickening (≥10 mm) on CT. Twenty-six of the 28 patients had hepatocellular carcinoma. The severity of hepatic dysfunction was determined by using the Child–Pugh classification. We analyzed the patterns of bowel wall thickening and degree of portal hypertension on CT and the survival periods after initial CT detection of colonic wall thickening. Results: The involved segment of the colon was diffusely thickened with either scalloped or nodular circumferential configuration. In all patients, the thickened colonic wall enhanced poorly. Although the ascending colon was involved in all patients, the transverse (n= 14) or descending (n= 5) colon was also simultaneously involved. Most patients exhibited an advanced stage of portal hypertension on CT. The median survival period of 25 patients who expired was 34 days, and 21 patients (84%) expired within 3 months. Conclusions: Colonic wall thickening on CT can be used as one of the indicators of poor prognosis in cirrhotic patients. Advanced liver cirrhosis with significantly severe dysfunction is the likely cause of mortality. Therefore, a less aggressive therapeutic approach is recommended if hepatocellular carcinoma is coexistent in these patients.

    Notes: Summary In ketamine anesthetized cats, the contralateral labyrinth, the ipsilateral utricle, the ipsilateral horizontal and anterior semicircular canal nerves were completely destroyed, leaving the ipsilateral saccule intact. Neurons in the Deiters' nucleus, driven by electrical stimulation of the superior saccule, were responsive to static tilts in the antero-posterior direction. Results suggest that the saccule is capable of conveying information on head positional changes in the antero-posterior direction and that such information is retained at the level of the Deiters' nucleus.

The contralateral labyrinth was acutely destroyed. The ipsilateral semicircular canals were plugged and the ipsilateral saccule extirpated leaving the ipsilateral utricle intact. Neurons in the vestibular nuclear complex driven by electrical stimulation of the utricle were shown to be highly sensitive to static pitch. Results suggest that the observed response to static pitch was due exclusively to input from the utricle.

The inhibitory effects produced by activation of the medial region of caudal medulla on activities of the left and right cardiac sympathetic, vagus and greater splanchnic nerves were studied in chloralose-urethane anaesthetized cats.2. Electrical stimulation of the medial region produced an 80–92% inhibition of the sympathetic nerve activities, and a 45% and 58% inhibition of the left and right cardiac vagal nerve activities, respectively. There were no significant differences between effects elicited in the left and right autonomic nerves. Similar but smaller inhibitory effects were produced by micro-injection of sodium glutamate (0.5 mol/L) or DL-homocysteic acid (50 mmol/L) to the same medullary sites.3. These data suggest that neurons residing in the medial medullary region exert strong inhibitory effects on autonomic nerve activities. Since the vasculature is principally innervated by sympathetic nerves, inhibition of sympathetic nerve activities might be the principal factor responsible for the depressor effects caused by activation of the medial region of caudal medulla. The heart is innervated both by sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Thus, their simultaneous inhibition during activation of the medial region elicits only a weak and variable inhibition of the heart.

    Notes: High-purity, lightly Si-doped (μ77∼70 000–126 000 cm2/V s and n77∼2–8×1014 cm−3) molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) GaAs layers have been characterized using variable-temperature Hall effect and C-V measurements, photothermal ionization spectroscopy, low-temperature photoluminescence (PL), and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). The spectroscopic measurements of the residual donors and acceptors indicate that the pronounced increase in carrier concentration which is observed with increasing As flux (for a constant Ga flux) results from incorporation of additional residual S donors from the As source material, and not from reductions in the Si acceptor concentration or residual C acceptor concentration. The increase in carrier concentration with As flux is considerably more pronounced when using an alternative source of As, which introduces both S and 3 additional donor species. The C acceptor concentration increases with As flux using either As source, although the increase is much stronger with the alternative source. The dependence of C concentration on the As source implies that the As source itself contributes at least part of the C background. The Si acceptor concentration is negligible for the range of growth conditions that were used. Close compensation between the residual S donors and C acceptors may account for the high resistivity previously observed in undoped samples grown in this system using the purer As source. The PL data exhibit very weak "defect''-related emissions in the 1.504–1.512 and 1.466–1.482 eV ranges; evidence is presented supporting the existence of a correlation between these two sets of peaks, in agreement with the work of Briones and Collins.Temperature and excitation intensity-dependent PL measurements are used to demonstrate conclusively that the peaks in the 1.466–1.482 eV range are donor-to-acceptor and band-to-acceptor in nature, involving normal shallow donors and at least four different acceptor levels whose exact origin is unknown. The "defect'' peak intensity is larger in the less pure material which contains more C, implying that the "defects'' may be C related. Several electron traps including M1, M3, and M4 are observed in the DLTS spectra, and the C-V measurements give a total trap concentration of ∼3×1013 cm−3.

    Notes: Constant capacitance deep-level transient spectroscopy measurements are performed on molecular beam epitaxially grown GaAs layers with net carrier concentrations of 3.3–6.5×1014 cm−3. Four trap levels are detected, three of which are usually detected in molecular beam epitaxial layers, and the fourth, a very shallow trap at 30 meV, has not been previously reported. Determination of the concentrations for this new level dispute the accepted interpretation of Hall measurements near and above room temperature.
