    Notes: Summary Spinocerebellar tract (SCT) neurones in and around the central cervical nucleus (CCN) were physiologically identified by antidromic activation of these cells on stimulation of the cerebellum. Among the Spinocerebellar tract cells thus identified, those ascending the contralateral spinal funiculi were found in the CCN and ventralwards, whereas those ascending the ipsilateral funiculi existed mostly dorsal to the CCN partly overlapping with crossed cells in the nucleus. Mapping sites from which CCN cells were antidromically activated showed that axons of the CCN-SCT cross at the same segment, ascend the ventral funiculus initially, the lateral funiculus at rostral C1 and the lateral border of the medulla to reach the cerebellar peduncle, enter the cerebellum mainly via the restiform body but possibly also via the superior peduncle. Systematic mapping of stimulation within the cerebellum indicated that the CCNSCT projects to the medial part of the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe bilaterally. Projection to lobules I–II was found in almost all CCN-SCT cells examined. Three fourths of CCN-SCT cells projected to the posterior lobe, as revealed by less extensive mapping. Mapping of axonal regions of the same single CCN-SCT cells showed that they project multifocally in the cerebellum, where projection to lobules I–II was common and that to other areas varied with individual cells. Conduction velocites decreased within the cerebellum probably as the result of repeated branching. Mossy fibre responses evoked on stimulation of the C2 dorsal root in cats with the transected dorsal funiculi were shown to be mediated mostly via the CCN-SCT. Mapping the field potential showed that the response was by far the largest in lobules I–II. This suggested that the terminals provided by the CCN-SCT are the densest in these lobules.

    Notes: Summary Extracellular and intracellular recordings were made from spinocerebellar tract neurones of the central cervical nucleus (CCN) in C1–C3 segments of the anaesthetized cat. These neurones were identified by antidromic activation from the cerebellar peduncle. Stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal root elicited extracellular spikes or EPSPs with a monosynaptic latency in almost all CCN neurones in the same segment (segmental input). Late excitatory effects were also observed in about one third of CCN neurones. The monosynaptic EPSP was occasionally followed by an IPSP. The excitatory input from the dorsal root to CCN neurones was extended over several segments for some CCN neurons (extrasegmental input). Monosynaptic excitation was evoked in CCN neurones after stimulation of dorsal neck muscle nerves as well; i.e. splenius (SPL), biventer cervicis and complexus (BCC), rectus capitus dorsalis, and obliquus capitus caudalis. Thresholds for this excitation were near the threshold of the nerve, suggesting that it originated from group I fibres. The component of excitation added after strong stimulation of neck muscle nerves would be attributed to group II fibres. When a CCN neurone received excitatory input from the nerve of one muscle, it was generally not affected by stimulation of other nerves in the same segment. Such muscle specificity of segmental input was the principal pattern of connexion of neck muscle afferents with CCN neurones. In some cases, however, excitatory convergence from SPL and BCC nerves onto single CCN neurones or excitation from the SPL nerve and inhibition from the BCC nerve were also observed. Nearly half of the CCN neurones received input from one muscle nerve of the same segment and not from the afferent of the same muscle of different segments, indicating a segment specificity of input. In the remaining CCN neurones, weaker excitatory effects were induced from afferents of different segments as well. In such extrasegmental effects, inputs to CCN neurones from caudal segments predominated in frequency over those from rostral segments. The origin of extrasegmental input was generally confined to the same muscle. Low threshold muscle afferents from the SPL and BCC were intraaxonally stained with HRP. The collaterals of the stained fibre distributed branchlets and terminals to the CCN, laminae VII, VIII, and motor nuclei. Two fibres responding to local muscle prodding or stretch showed a similar morphology. The findings indicated that muscle spindle afferents from primary endings projected to the CCN.

    Notes: Summary The effects of neck afferent stimulation on vestibulospinal neurons in Deiters' nucleus and in the descending nucleus, and the interaction of cervical and vestibular input, were examined extracellularly in decerebrate, decerebellate cats. Many of the vestibulospinal neurons were identified as having axons in the lateral or medial vestibulospinal tract (LVST or MVST) and as being driven antidromically from C3 or C6. Half of the spontaneously active neurons were excited with a latency of 2.5–5.5 ms (early excitation) by stimulation of the contralateral C2 ganglion. In some neurons early excitation was followed by late excitation (latency 〉 6 ms), which was in other neurons the only effect seen. Early excitation was due to stimulation of proximal afferents because stimulation of the C2 dorsal or ventral rami usually produced late excitation only. Early excitation was seen in LVST and MVST neurons terminating between C3 and C6 and in those projecting beyond C6. Neurons with early excitation were scattered throughout Deiters' nucleus and the rostral part of the descending nucleus. In some neurons, mainly in the descending nucleus, the initial effect of contralateral C2 ganglion stimulation was inhibition. Inhibition could be evoked by stimulation of the ganglion or dorsal rami bilaterally. The axons of all tested inhibited neurons were in the MVST. Thirty-five percent of the population studied received convergence of early excitation and short-latency input from the labyrinth, sometimes from the semicircular canals. There was also convergence between late excitation or inhibition and vestibular input. The influence of neck afferent input on vestibulospinal neurons provides one pathway for this input to the neck and limb segments of the spinal cord. This pathway may be part of the substrate of the tonic neck reflex. In addition, vestibulospinal neurons are one site of interaction between neck and vestibular reflexes.

    Notes: Summary In the anesthetized cat, the posterior canal nerve (PCN) was stimulated by electric pulses and synaptic responses were recorded intracellularly in the three antagonistic pairs of extraocular motoneurons. Pure reciprocal effects were obtained in the motoneurons innervating the antagonistic pair of ipsilateral oblique muscles and the antagonistic pair of contralateral vertical rectus muscles. These responses consisted of low threshold disynaptic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) in either the contralateral superior oblique (c-SO) (trochlear) or contralateral inferior rectus (c-IR) motoneurons and of disynaptic inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in either the ipsilateral inferior oblique (i-IO) or ipsilateral superior rectus (i-SR) motoneurons. In addition, disynaptic IPSPs were also found in (i-SO) motoneurons. Mixtures of low threshold (dior trisynaptic) EPSPs and IPSPs were found in all other extraocular motoneurons except for the contralateral lateral rectus (c-LR) motoneurons. These results may afford a basis for the characteristic eye movements induced by vertical canal nerve stimulation.

    Notes: Summary Field potentials and postsynaptic potentials were recorded in the vestibular and abducens nuclei and neurons following vestibular nerve stimulation in anesthetized newborn kittens (within 72 h after birth). Stimulation of the ipsilateral vestibular nerve evoked an initial P wave and an N1 field potential in the vestibular nuclei. No N2 potential was evoked. Latencies of the peak of the P wave, the onset and the peak of the N1 potential were 0.99±0.16 ms, 1.66±0.18 ms, and 2.51±0.23 ms, respectively. Ipsilateral vestibular nerve stimulation evoked monosynaptic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) and polysynaptic inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) in vestibular nuclear neurons. Stimulation of the contralateral vestibular nerve evoked polysynaptic IPSPs in vestibular nuclear neurons. In abducens motoneurons, ipsilateral vestibular nerve stimulation evoked monosynaptic EPSPs and disynaptic IPSPs; contralateral vestibular nerve stimulation produced disynaptic EPSPs. We conclude that short circuit pathways of the vestibul-ovestibular and vestibulo-ocular reflex arc are present in the kitten already at birth.

    Notes: Summary The responses of neck and forelimb muscles to sinusoidal polarization of the horizontal canal nerve were compared by recording from these muscles simultaneously. Contrary to results on the vestibulocollic reflex, the central phase lag in the vestibulo-forelimb reflex increases with increasing frequencies up to 3 Hz. This demonstrates a difference in the organization of vestibular-driven pathways to neck and forelimb muscles.

    Notes: Summary Although dividing the posterior communicating artery (PComA) during surgery has been criticized for increasing the risk of ischaemia, this procedure increases working space improving visibility and the ability to manipulate during treatment of basilar tip aneurysms via the pterional approach. We divided a hypoplastic PComA in 4 of our cases of basilar tip aneurysm. This was necessary because either (1) the length of the PComA and intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) limited medial retraction of the ICA and access to the basilar bifurcation region, or (2) the PComA and its perforators ran just in front of the aneurysm, interfering with its exposure. We were able to clip the aneurysm neck in all four patients, three of whom had complications including temporary impairment of consciousness, ocular movement disorders and altered sensation in the extremities. Patients with complications showed transient hypersomnolence immediately after surgery; computed tomography showed small thalamic infarctions. However, in two of three patients the ischaemic events occurred contralateral to the side of PComA section. All patients regained consciousness within a week and were discharged with mild ocular movement palsies. In our cases except one with ischaemic complications, thalamic infarction probably resulted from thalamo-perforating artery injury when the aneurysm neck was clipped, rather than tuberothalamic artery injury due to section of the PComA. Taking previous reports and our results into consideration, we believe that division of a hypoplastic PComA is a safe procedure in particular cases when the grade of subarachnoid haemorrhage is not poor and there are no cerebrovascular risk factors, although we realize it is desirable to preserve normal blood flow.

    Notes: An experimental system for high-resolution soft x-ray emission spectroscopy was made. The experimental system is designed to be attached to the undulator beamlines. Spectrometer uses the Rowland circle geometry in which input slit, spherical grating, and multichannel detector lie on the focal circle. Three blazed holographic gratings are changeable in the vacuum. The Rowland circle radii of gratings are 5, 7, and 10 m and their line densities are 600, 1200, and 2400 lines/mm, respectively. The available photon energy is from 30 to 1200 eV. The resolution ΔE is achieved to 0.06 eV by 50 μ-input-slit width for hν=120 eV. Several experimental results measured by this system are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
