Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the histological effects of amniotic fluid on bone healing in the rabbit fetus. Fetal femurs (n=34) were fractured in the diaphysis and two experimental groups were established. In group A fetuses (n=18), the fracture ends were bathed in amniotic fluid through their unsutured skin wounds. In group B fetuses (n=16), the fracture sites were isolated from amniotic fluid by suturing the wound edges. Nonoperated fetuses were used as control group (n=9). The fetuses were sacrificed on the first, third and seventh postoperative days for histological studies. Histological examination of the specimens was performed to detect inflammation, fibroblastic proliferation, bone cellularity, callus and cartilage formation. The results were compared, using the Fisher exact chi square test criteria, where no statistically significant differences were detected between group A and group B ( P〉0.05).

Notes: Abstract An experimental search for dark matter particle candidates using cryogenic detectors requires a low radioactive background environment. We discuss the status of a cryogenic dark matter experiment to be performed in the Stanford Underground Facility. The detectors will be cooled in a specially designed cryostat connected to a modified side access Oxford 400 dilution refrigerator. Details of the cryostat design and its operating performance are presented. The effectiveness of the multi-level shield surrounding the cryostat, as well as the background levels we expect to achieve in the pilot experiment are discussed. Finally, we examine the limits which can be set on dark matter candidates with such an experiment.

Notes: Abstract The radioactivity levels of Istanbul environs lignites were determined. The gamma-spectrometric technique has been used for the determination of activity levels of naturally occurring radionuclides 235+238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra and fallout radionuclides 137Cs in lignites taken from 7 different parts of Istanbul. Concentration of 238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra 137Cs and 235U were found up to 1.6 ppm, 1.7 ppm, 4.9 ppm, 56.8 Bq/kg, 34 Bq/kg, 1.8 Bq/kg, 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition total alpha- and beta-activity levels in lignite samples were found to be 7.6 and 15 eps, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Repair of heteroduplex DNA containing an A/G mismatch in a mutL background requires the Escherichia coli mutY gene function. The mutY-dependent in vitro repair of A/G mismatches is accompanied by repair DNA synthesis on the DNA strand bearing mispaired adenines. The size of the mufY-dependent repair tract was measured by the specific incorporation of α-[32P]dCTP into different restriction fragments of the repaired DNA. The repair tract is shorter than 12 nucleotides and longer than 5 nucleotides and is localized to the 3′ side of the mismatched adenine. This repair synthesis is carried out by DNA polymerase I.
