Notes: The solid phase reaction of gadolinium thin film and silicon substrate was investigated in lateral growth geometry with the help of periodic titanium protective stripes by optical microscopy. In the lateral reaction zone the shape of the interface between gadolinium and Gd silicide was very complicated and showed pattern formation. This silicide growth can be described as a kinetic process modified by the structure of the Gd film in contrast to the previously proposed simple nucleation.

Notes: Abstract The clinical applications of theoretical immunology are not numerous. The authors demonstrate present-day immunocytotherapeutic approaches to fetal tissue transplantation widely used in medicine. Results of therapy by injections of lymphokine-activated killer cells in combination with interleukin-2, T-cell vaccines, and genetically transformed T cells are presented.

Notes: Summary DNA staining methods based on aspecific interactions with dye molecules have been replaced by an immunofluorescent approach to measure DNA replication. Biotin-11-dUTP was incorporated into permeable thymocytes isolated after emetine or cyclosporin A treatment of mice. Active sites of DNA replication were amplified based on biotin-avidin interaction and verified under fluorescent microscope. Cytometry of fluorescent images allow the direct measurement of replicating DNA without aspecific detection of total cellular DNA. Cytometric analysis of replication revealed that emetine acts at the early S phase, while cyclosporin A blocks in vivo DNA synthesis at mid S phase.

Notes: Abstract The β− decay of101Zr has been investigated at the fission-product separators JOSEF and LOHENGRIN. The half-life of101Zr has been determined to 2.5(1) s and a level scheme for101Nb has been established fromγ ray singles as well as X/3-γ and γ—γ coincidence measurements. Conversion coefficients for transitions in101Nb and level half-lives between 10 ps and 2 ns have been determined. Three rotational bands are identified among the low-lying levels with band heads at 0 keV, 206 keV and 208 keV. The bands are probably based on the Nilsson configurations [422 5/2+], [301 3/2−] and [303 5/2−], respectively. The deformation has been determined to βq=0.40(4) and 0.41(8) for the ground state band and the band based on the 206 keV level from the half-lives of the first and second excited members of these bands. This shows that the rapid onset of deformation at N=60 which is typical for the A=100 region of neutron-rich nuclei, takes also place in the Nb isotopes. Nilsson model calculations describe the experimental data well, especially the several determined transition probabilities including those for E1 transitions from the 206 and 208 keV band heads to the ground state.

Notes: Abstract The γ radiation from the ß− decay of the high-spin isomer in98Y has been studied at the separator JOSEF. A main goal was to get insight into the spins of levels in98Zr which have been interpreted as members of an intruder band based on the 02 + state at 854 keV. The measuredγ-γ angular-correlations lead to the assignment of spins of 4 and 3 ℏ to the 2491 and 1844 keV levels, respectively, and contradict their interpretation as the 6+ and 4+ states of the proposed band. For the 2.0s isomer of98Y, the ß{−}-decay properties suggest I=5 with a major configuration [πg9/2,νs1/2(g2 7/2)0].

Notes: Summary Cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA), homovanillic acid (HVA), and tryptophan in both CSF and plasma were measured in a carefully selected group of 33 depressed women. Strict and explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria were used, and CSF was taken under controlled circumstances. Seventeen operationally defined and uniformly rated psychiatric symptoms as well as global depression severity and 12 clinical background variables were correlated with the four biochemical parameters, using multivariate regression analysis based on Spearman's rank correlation coefficient according to the nature of the data. Global depression severity did not correlate with any of the biochemical variables; there were, however, significant correlations between CSF 5HIAA and anxiety, insomnia, and suicide on the one hand, and between CSF HVA and motor symptoms and paranoidity on the other hand. Background variables showed only a few-and much weaker-correlations. It was concluded that central monoamine metabolism does affect some particular psychiatric symptoms but is not parallel with the complex clinical construct of the depressive disease. Further studies using isolated psychopathological symptoms instead of nosological categories are suggested in clinical neurochemistry.

Notes: Abstract Small Co particles were prepared by sputter etching of a 4–5 nm thick “island-like” Co film deposited on Si(111) substrate. The density of states (DOS) of the valence band was measured by means of ultraviolet photoemission (UPS) during the sputter etching to monitor the formation of small Co particles. It was found that at a given thickness of the Co island the Fermi level was shifted by 1.8-1.9 eV toward higher binding energy and theDOS decreased or no states were detectable at the Fermi level. This effect was explained by the formation of small Co particles with electronic structure which is significantly different from that of the bulk Co.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the prolonged lack (or existence) of solar activity, such as the Maunder or Spörer minima, since considerable climatic changes barely occur within a shorter time interval. For this aim, first the possible influences of the present-day 11-yr solar cycle are considered for higher atmospheric regions, and found scarcely to be responsible for inducing climatic changes. On the other hand, solar activity-generated changes of the solar parameter in the visible spectrum are estimated too. The results of these simple considerations indicate that the external manifestations of the solar cycle hardly can cause observable change in the tropospheric weather (and so the long-lasting solar quiets seem not climatically significant), and seem indirectly to support the possibility, that the Milankovitch mechanism plays an important role in forcing the ice-age oscillations at least during the Quaternary period. Besides it can be concluded, that greater (≥ 0.1%, measured from satellite platform) solar parameter variations cannot be in close connection with the known forms of solar activity, which suggest that the possible, significant secular solar luminosity changes could be generated deep inside the Sun and/or could not be closely related to the sunspot cycle.
