    Notes: Abstract An MIP-AES element specific detector has been directly coupled to an HPLC separation system by means of hydraulic high-pressure nebulization (HHPN) with an appropriate desolvation unit. This system was applied to Cr(III)/Cr(VI) speciation analysis. The linear dynamic range of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) determination was two orders of magnitude, absolute detection limits were 13 ng for Cr(III) and 18 ng for Cr (VI), respectively. The matrix effect caused by the easily ionizable elements (Na, Ca, K) was significant in real samples.

    Notes: Summary The effect of orotic acid on the liver glycogen content in the mice, frogs and catfish was studied. It was observed that the orotic acid significantly increases the glycogen content in the liver of mice and catfish as it does in rats. On the other hand it causes a fall of the glycogen level in frogs in experiments made both in autumn and spring. This effect was modified by amino acids administrated together with orotic acid.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 62 Patienten mit neuromuskulären Erkrankungen und bei 17 Kontrollpatienten wurde die Konzentration von Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl− und anorganischem Phosphor (Pi) im Serum und im lumbalen Liquor vergleichend gemessen, und die Werte wurden statistisch bearbeitet. Obwohl keine für die verschiedenen Erkrankungstypen charakteristischen Veränderungen beobachtet werden konnten, ist die signifikante Erhöhung der Pi-Konzentration im Serum bei Duchenne-Dystrophie doch erwähnenswert. Die eventuellen Veränderungen der Ionenkonzentration im Serum und im Liquor können zur Diagnosestellung bei verschiedenen neuromuskulären Erkrankungen beitragen.
    Notes: Summary The Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, and Pi concentrations in serum and lumbar CSF of 17 controls and 62 patients with neuromuscular diseases were determined and the values statistically evaluated. Although alterations in ion concentrations specifical to different groups were not observed in either of these biological fluids, the significant increase in serum Pi concentration in Duchenne muscular dystrophy seems to be remarkable. It is suggested that the possible alterations in the ion content of the serum and CSF may contribute additional data to the diagnosis of various neuromuscular diseases.

    Notes: Summary In 40 rabbits cerebral ischaemia was induced by autologous blood clot emboli injected into the middle cerebral artery. Autologous blood clot formed spontaneously (within 2 h) in a catheter fixed in the internal carotid artery. The effects of embolization were investigated on arterial blood pressure, respiration, local cerebral blood flow, locally available O2 (aO2), steady (DC) potentials and EEG. After embolization the blood pressure and the frequency of respiration decreased transiently. On the embolized side the local cerebral blood flow, aO2, the frequency and amplitude of the EEG diminished markedly and the DC potentials shifted to negative. Similar but less marked and short-lasting changes could be seen on the contralateral side. Pathological examination of the brains revealed extensive infarction with haemorrhagic components. The technique is a promising method for inducing stroke experimentally and offers various ways for its thorough investigation.

    Notes: Summary A highly reproducible form of experimental embolization of the intracranial arteries is presented in rabbits. The injection of a silver or gold ball into the internal carotid artery caused occlusion predominantly of the middle cerebral artery and/or its branches. At the moment when embolization took place, the characteristic signs of acute cerebral ischaemia occurred in the electroencephalogram, local cerebral blood flow and steady (DC) potentials. Several hours after the ball had been injected the extent of the focal lesions became recognizable on sections stained for myelin. The procedure is simple, rapid, inexpensive and practically always successful. The extent of the lesion may be influenced by the change of both the ball size and the posture of animals. Moreover, the site of occlusion is easily discernible both on radiographs and to the naked eye.

    Notes: Abstract Objectives: To determine whether vinpocetine decreases short- and long-term case fatality and proportion of dependent survivors if administered within 2 weeks of stroke onset. Methods: All published and unpublished trials were attempted to be identified using the standard search strategy of the Cochrane Collaboration Stroke Review Group, using MEDLINE searches performed with all known manufacturer code names and trade names of vinpocetine and by contacting manufacturers of vinpocetine to give information of all randomised controlled trials on vinpocetine in stroke. Researchers who participated in trials on vinpocetine in Hungary were asked for further information. Only truly randomised, unconfounded clinical trials that compared the effect of vinpocetine to either placebo or another reference treatment for acute stroke where treatment started no later than 14 days after stroke onset were eligible for inclusion. Data synthesis and analysis was performed using the Cochrane Review Manager software (RevMan version 3.0). Results: Among the identified studies on vinpocetine in stroke, only one fulfilled the selection criteria for inclusion in the review. No death occurred in the study groups and no statistically significant difference was found in dependency between the treatment and the placebo groups. No adverse effects were reported. Conclusions: Based on only one small randomised controlled unconfounded study, presently there is not enough evidence to decide whether the administration of vinpocetine does or does not decrease case fatality and dependency in acute stroke.
