    Notes: The characteristics of a high-pressure pulsed singlet oxygen generator is investigated. This generator was designed for the energy source of new pulsed chemical lasers. A ceramic porous pipe is devised in it to attain the high-pressure pulsed operation. New methods were developed to measure a water vapor pressure and a reaction efficiency in the pulsed singlet oxygen generator system. The maximum singlet oxygen pressure obtained was 35 Torr, and the estimated initial excitation efficiency was 70%–80%

    Notes: Electron, negative ion, and positive ion densities in a capacitively-coupled radio-frequency (rf, 13.56 MHz) SF6 plasma have been investigated as functions of the pressure (30–700 mTorr) and rf power. The decay of the charged particle densities in the afterglow has also been studied to obtain information about their kinetics. The electron density was determined by using a microwave cavity resonance technique. Negative ions were detected by measuring the density of photodetached electrons produced by pulsed laser irradiation of the plasma. The positive ion density was obtained from Langmuir probe measurements. At a rf power of 0.13 W/cm2 and at low pressures ((approximately-less-than)100 mTorr) the positive ion density, which is virtually equal to the negative ion density, is found to be larger than the electron density by a factor of a few hundred; the ion/electron density ratio increases with increasing pressure to reach a value of a few thousand at high pressures. Wavelength-dependent photodetachment measurements indicate that the dominant contribution to the photodetachment signal at 266 nm comes from F−, but F− is a minor negative-ion species with respect to the density; that is, the photodetachment efficiency for the dominant negative ion species (supposed to be SF−5) is low. The recombination rate constant for F− (supposedly with SF+5) is suggested to be an order of magnitude larger than that for the dominant ion species, the latter being estimated to be slightly smaller than 10−7 cm3 s−1. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A pulsed iodine laser driven by a chemical oxygen generator was developed. The energy deposition on I(2P3/2) was made by a high-pressure pulsed O2(a1Δg) generator. Although this scheme is the same as the conventional chemically pumped oxygen-iodine laser (COIL), it is unique in that the pulsed laser was extracted by the high-energy density pulsed pumping scheme. The pulse energy obtained was 1.34 J, the pulse width was 1.5 ms, and the peak power was 900 W. The specific energy was estimated to be 3.6 J/l.

    Notes: Abstract The therapeutic measure against concomitant intraabdominal aneurysm and colorectal carcinoma is still a dilemma. Here we report the clinical courses of three cases of colorectal carcinoma coincidental with moderate-sized abdominal aortic or iliac artery aneurysm in those who underwent operations during a recent three-year period. Resection of malignant lesion and wrapping of aneurysm were carried out in all three patients simultaneously. Carcinoma was staged by Dukes classification as A in one patient and B in two patients. All tolerated surgery well without any signs of complications. Two-year or three-year follow-up shows that they have continued to do well, with no further symptoms of abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease, or recurrence of colorectal carcinoma. We conclude that, if the aneurysm is not about to rupture and the carcinoma is in an advanced stage, then the carcinoma should be resected, associated with interim aneurysmal wrapping. However, both lesions need to be resected eventually for long-term survival.

    Notes: Abstract A theoretical and experimental study was conducted aimed at achieving laser oscillation in the (a-X) electronic transition of oxygen molecules. Although this transition is highly forbidden by rigorous selection rules, it may nevertheless concede stimulated emission, if the population inversion is high enough. The idea is based on a recently developed apparatus, namely, a porous pipe type high-pressure chemical singlet oxygen generator. A numerical model which describes the characteristics of this generator was developed to estimate the population inversion and small-signal gain achievable in a laser cavity using this source. The calculations showed that the small-signal gain ought to be sufficient to achieve laser oscillation. Preliminary experiments were conducted, but lasing was not yet observed. It is shown that the scattering losses caused by water droplet aerosols are mainly responsible for preventing our system from laser oscillation.

    Notes: Abstract A new energy extraction scheme of a chemically pumped pulsed large-scale iodine laser based on a high-pressure pulsed singlet oxygen generator is proposed. In previous investigations only low-pressure oxygen generators have been considered. Since they require a high iodine density for an efficient amplifier operation, the lifetime of the stored energy is correspondingly small and thus only small-sized iodine amplifiers appear to be technically feasible. We found, however, that when the singlet oxygen is generated at high-pressure, the iodine density required can be considerably reduced so that the lifetime of the stored energy becomes sufficiently long to fill up large amplifier cells. A numerical model is developed and the extractable energy is theoretically estimated. It is shown that 0.2J/1·pass can be extracted when an input pulse of 20 ns duration (FWHM) and 1 J/cm2 fluence is fed into the amplifying medium.

    Notes: Summary Five patients (4 male and 1 female) were observed to have capsular and thalamic infarction ascribed to descending transtentorial herniation (DTH) caused by head injury. A lucid interval immediately after the trauma and the presence of an epidural hematoma (EDH) characterized all five cases. At the time of hospitalization consciousness was seriously impaired and signs of cerebral herniation were apparent. Two to four days after the trauma, low attenuation in the computed tomography (CT) images pinpointed intracerebral damage in the anterolateral part of the thalamus and in the internal capsule on the same side as that of the EDH in three patients, and in the other two patients bilateral thalamic and capsular damage was noted. The low attenuation implicated the perforating arteries, that is the anterior thalamoperforating and anterior choroidal arteries, suggesting infarcted regions caused by occlusion of these arteries. Findings in the present study suggest that arterial occlusion in closed head injury may result from DTH. Moreover, infarction may be attributed to the delayed effects of injury.
