Notes: The day and night pattern of upstream and downstream dispersal of masu salmon fry of wild and domestic origin was compared in artificial channels (45 m long), for two ages of planting: unfed alevins and eyed eggs. Early dispersal was important for the wild stock (48–50%) compared with the domestic one (16–36%). More wild fry moved downstream than upstream, and more domestic fry dispersed upstream. Upstream movement in wild and domestic fry was more active by day than by night, except for wild fry planted as eyed eggs, where upstream migration was higher at night. In contrast, downstream movement in wild and domestic fry was more common by night than by day, but daylight catches were not negligible for the wild stock.

Notes: The stabilization of low-frequency density fluctuations is evidenced in the Nagoya Bumpy Torus (NBT-1M) [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research (IAEA, Vienna, 1985), Vol. 2, p. 551] in the presence of microwave-heated hot-electron rings. Flute-type fluctuations, which are considered to be stabilized by the charge-uncovering effect of the rings, are found to cause large plasma losses, and to affect radial density profiles in the way that the lower fluctuation level yields the steeper density gradient. The particle confinement is, therefore, improved by the hot-electron rings to some extent, but is mainly determined by the plasma convection, which is expected from the discrepancy between density and potential profiles. It is also found that fluctuations in a toroidal plasma inside the ring grow when a weak negative ambipolar potential and a steep density gradient are formed, and are reduced to a low level when a deep potential well is achieved.

Notes: Summary We have reported preparations and gas chromatographic analyses of volatile derivatives of sulfuric acid and taurine (Masuoka et al., 1988; 1989). By extending these studies, we have developed a method for the gas chromatographic determination of cysteic acid. Cysteic acid was converted to the N-isobutoxycarbonyl derivative by the reaction with isobutyl chloroformate in the presence of sodium hydroxide. After desalting with a cation-exchange column, the derivative was converted to the silver salt by reacting with silver oxide. The resulting silver salt was quantitatively esterified with methyl iodide in the presence of dimethyl sulfate and silver oxide. Dimethyl N-isobutoxy-carbonylcysteate [methyl 2-(N-isobutoxycarbonylamino)-3-(methoxysulfonyl) propanoate] formed was analyzed by gas chromatography. The calibration curve was linear up to 5.0µmol per ml of cysteic acid and the recovery was more than 95%.

Notes: Abstract This article presents a simple technique for temperature visualization using liquid crystals in an aqueous solution during the process of cooling and solidification. This method provides a clear picture of the role of double-diffusive convection in producing vertical compositional and density stratification in an initially homogeneous liquid during solidification.

Notes: [Auszug] The rat small eye strain (rSey) lacks eyes and nose in the homozygote, and is similar to the mouse Sey strain with mutations in the Pax-6 gene. We isolated Pax-6 cDNA clones from an rSey homozygote library, and found an internal deletion of about 600 basepairs in the serine/threonine-rich domain. ...

Notes: Abstract The phase behavior of binary systems composed of water and nonionic surfactants were investigated. The nonionic surfactants studied were the methoxypolyoxyethylene dodecanoates (R11COO(EO) n CH3,n=4.9, 6.1, 7.3, 9.3, and 12.8, wheren is the average number of oxyethylene units). The phase behaviors of R11COO(EO) n CH3 were compared with those of the polyoxyethylene dodecyl ethers (R12O(EO) p H) and polyoxyethylene methyl dodecyl ethers (R12O(EO) q CH3) which have been previously reported. It was found that the R11COO(EO) n CH3s have lower cloud points and lower upper limit temperatures for the existence of the mesophase as compared to the other two types. A R11COO(EO)12.8CH3/water system had favorable solution properties for practical use, such as a relatively narrow hexagonal liquid crystalline region and a lower melting point than the ordinary alcohol ethoxylate type nonionics.

Notes: Abstract The effect of graphite on the strength of electroless nickel plating on cast iron was studied. Specimens of cast irons with four types of graphite and of 0.4% carbon steel were prepared and machined into plates with dimensions of 10 mm × 3 mm × 80 mm. Electroless nickel plating, about 40 μm thick, was deposited on the test pieces. The plated test pieces were tested by three-point bending tests using both acoustic emission (AE) and microscopic observation to evaluate the strength of the plating film. It was found that the first AE signal was generated when the cracks initiated and the final AE signal was generated when the film was fractured by crack penetration into the film. In addition it was found that film cracks on cast iron were initiated by the graphite existing at the interface between the plating film and the substrate, and propagated to the surface of the film, unlike carbon steel. The strength of the plating film on cast iron measured by this method, decreased more sharply with increasing amount of graphite than with graphite shape. Observations of cast iron surfaces at early stages of plating showed that the nickel was deposited only on the matrix and not on the graphite. It is believed that the non-deposited areas of the cast iron acted as types of defects. It is concluded that the strength of electroless nickel plating film on cast iron is strongly influenced by graphite on the surface.

Notes: Abstract A polarized heavy ion source based on spin and charge exchange collisions and laser optical pumping succeeded in producing a nuclear polarized3He+ beam. A brief description is given on a prerequisite as a practical heavy ion source and on an external injection system by which the polarized3He beam will be injected into the RCNP isochronous cyclotron.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear polarization was measured by means of beam foil spectroscopy for a3He+ ion produced by an electron capture process of a3He2+ from a polarized sodium atom in an incident energy range from 20 to 28 keV. Assuming that a polarized electron of a sodium atom is predominantly captured to the 3d orbital of a3He+ ion andcascades down to the 1s ground state via the 2p orbital, an alignment factorA 0 col (L=2) for the 3d orbital of a3He+ ion was extracted by comparing the observed initial sodium polarization andfinal nuclear polarization. The observedA 0 col (L=2) showed a less pronounced energy dependence andwere qualitatively reproduced by the theoretical calculation.
