Notes: The effects of dilution gases on hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx:H) films were investigated. Silane and ammonia were used as the reactive species, while nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, and argon were used as the dilution gases in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor-deposition system at a substrate temperature of 300 °C. The electrical, physical, and chemical properties of the a-SiNx:H films were found to be highly sensitive to the various kinds and flow rates of the carrier gases in the deposition. Additionally, the physical properties of growth rate, refractive index, and etching rate were also investigated. The hydrogen bonding configuration was explored by infrared spectroscopy. The total hydrogen concentrations for all a-SiNx:H films were observed to be smaller than 3.0×1022 cm−3. The electrical properties were characterized by I-V and C-V measurements in metal-insulator-semiconductor structures. The breakdown strength was determined at the current density of 3 mA/cm2; in addition, the dominant mode of electronic conduction would appear to be the Poole–Frenkel emission. The interface trap state density Dit which ranged from 3.4×1011 to 1.3×1012 cm−2 eV−1 was evaluated by the C-V characteristics. Finally, the influences of the gas dilution in the a-SiNx:H films, as applied to the devices, were investigated by using the hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin-film transistors (a-Si:H TFTs). Analyses of the transfer characteristics of the TFT devices revealed that the density of deep gap states is 4×1012 cm−2 eV−1 and the field-effect mobility μFE is changing from 0.37 to 1.45 cm2/V s.

Notes: Zn-doped GaxIn1−xP epilayers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition have been studied in a wide range of GaP mole fraction. The Zn distribution coefficient was studied as a function of alloy composition. With a constant flow rate of diethylzinc, a decreasing net hole concentration was observed with increasing GaP mole fraction. The I-V characteristics of Au on p-GaxIn1−xP Schottky diodes show a deviation from an ideal thermionic behavior as the lattice mismatch increases. This deviation was analyzed in terms of the shunt resistance which decreased exponentially with the mismatch. A dominant hole trap located at EV+0.84 eV was detected by deep-level transient spectroscopy in a Ga0.032In0.968P layer. The density of this hole trap significantly increases with increasing lattice mismatch.

Notes: Third-order optical susceptibilities (χ(3)) of poly{(7-oxo-7, 10H-benz[de]imidazo[4',5':5,6]benzimidazo [2,1-a]isoquinoline-3,4:10,11-tetrayl)-carbonyl}, referred to as BBL, and poly(6,9-dihydro-6,9-dioxobisbenzimidazo[2,1b:1',2'j] benzo[1mn]-[3,8]phenanthroline-3,12-diyl), known as BBB, have been determined using the technique of degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) at 1.064 μm. BBL has a χ(3)xxxx=(1.5±0.4)×10−11 esu, three times as large as that of BBB and 38 times as large as that of CS2. Electrochemical doping led to a small (〈30%) increase in the third-order susceptibility of BBL.

Notes: Sera from 3528 patients with autoimmune disease, and non-autoimmune disease, and 500 normal individuals were studied For the presence of anticentromere antibodies (ACA) by indirect immunofluorescence on HEP-2 cells. Sixty-seven specimens were identified showing discrete speckled staining: 55 (82.1%), 11 (16.4%), and one (1.5%), were from patients with autoimmune disease, non-autoimmune disease and normal control subjects, respectively. These ACA were present frequently in CREST syndrome (55%), Raynaud's disease (29.6%) and primary biliary cirrhosis (30%). Only 16.4% of the antibody positive patients carried a clinical diagnosis of CREST, which means that ACA are not specific for CREST syndrome. High antibody titre persisted irrespective of whether or not the patients had active disease. The ACA were present infrequently in Sjögren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, Graves' disease, immune haemolytic anaemia, and vitiligo. Sera from 107 patients with various other autoimmune diseases were negative for ACA.

Notes: Abstract We report a 5-year-old boy with endodermal sinus tumour associated with benign cystic teratoma of the common bile duct (CBD). To our knowledge, there has been one case of teratoma of the CBD in the English literature with no morphological or radiological description. Our case presented a lobulated polypoid mass obstructing the distal CBD on sonography and computed tomography, which resembled the botryoid masses of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Notes: Abstract Studies were carried out to compare the behaviour of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and L-929 fibroblastic cells towards proteins crosslinked by glutaraldehyde (GTA) or carbodiimide (CDI) proposed for coating of vascular prostheses. CDI crosslinking of bovine serum albumin used alone, or mixed with gelatin, allowed higher rates of cell growth and DNA synthesis than GTA crosslinking independent of cells. Assessment of the plating efficiency revealed a similar behaviour of both cells towards membranes and reference plastic surface in terms of percentages of bound cells. HUVEC proliferation onto CDI crosslinked gelatin and/or albumin membranes did not differ significantly whereas the growth of L-929 was enhanced onto gelatin albumin membranes in comparison with both gelatin membranes and the reference surface. The analysis of DNA synthesis corroborated the results of the growth curves and elicited a delay of the growth phases in HUVEC cultured onto CDI crosslinked membranes, unlike the L-929 fibroblast.

Notes: An algorithm for integrating the constitutive equations for an elasto-viscoplastic cubic crystal is presented which is shown to be easily employed in a polycrystalliné analysis. Anisotropic elastic behaviour is incorporated into the standard constitutive equations for ductile single crystals. The algorithm is shown to be efficient, robust and general. The primary advantage of this algorithm is that is provides an implicit integration of the plastic deformation gradient while including the elastic response. This permits taking large time steps while maintaining accuracy and stability. Several polycrystalline examples are presented to demonstrate the effect of the time step on the solution. Examples also are presented which compare the algorithm described herein to an algorithm which neglects the elastic part of the deformation. In addition, the effect of the anisotropic component of the elasticity is investigated by comparing the results with those obtained assuming isotropic elasticity.
