Renal handling of electrolytes, including calcium (Ca), in response to physiological saline infusion (20 mL/kg, i.v., for 2 h) as well as basal circulating levels of Ca-regulating hormones were compared in 27 hypertensive elderly females (mean age 80±9 years), in 44 normotensive elderly females (79±9 years) and in 19 young normotensive females (23±4 years).2. The hypertensive elderly females showed excessive increase in urine volume and urinary excretions of sodium (Na), Ca and inorganic phosphate (P) in response to saline infusion, associated with slight but significant decrease in circulating levels of Na and ionized Ca compared with those in the other groups. These hypertensive elderly patients also showed characteristic features both in circulating blood pressure and Ca regulating factors; they showed significantly low levels of plasma renin activity and aldosterone concentration, significantly high plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide and noradrenalin, compared with those in young controls and normotensive elderly females.3. Moreover they showed significant increase in basal serum levels of parathyroid hormone and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and significant decrease in basal serum levels of calcitonin, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, compared with those in the other groups.4. These results suggest that the exaggerated natriuresis associated with excessive loss of Ca and P in urine may participate in the abnormality of Ca metabolism in low-renin hypertensive elderly patients.

To test the hypothesis that a central mechanism may play a role in the minimal reflex tachycardia noted in response to peripheral converting enzyme inhibition, we compared the effects of intravenous (i.v.) ceronapril (CER) with nitroglycerin (NTG) on neurotransmitter release in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), using an in vivo microdialysis method in pentobarbital anaesthetized rats.2. CER (0.1 mg/kg, i.v.) caused a progressive decrease in glutamate (GLU) release (CER 65 ± 7%vs NTG 83 ± 3% of each baseline at 140 min, P〈0.05) and attenuated the increase in glycine (GLY) release (CER 100 ± 8%vs NTG 122 ± 9%, P〈0.05).3. Prevention of blood pressure reduction due to i.v. CER by concomitant infusion of a subpressor dose of angiotensin II (AII) attenuated the progressive reduction of GLU release (87 ± 4%, P〈0.05 compared with NTG group), whereas GLY release was not affected (106±5%, NS compared with NTG group).4. Perfusion of GLU into this area at approximately physiological concentrations resulted in a sustained tachycardia with an attenuation of the depressor effect of i.v. CER and perfusion of GLY solely lowered blood pressure.5. These results demonstrate that i.v. converting enzyme inhibitor reduces the release of GLU in the RVLM, which was specifically caused by reducing circulating AII, without any effect on GLY release, thus resulting in the reduction of blood pressure with minimal effect on the heart rate.

    Notes: Summary We evaluated whether cromakalim (BRL 34915), a vasorelaxant agent which acts by opening potassium channels, could affect the systemic effects of endothelin, a newly discovered vasoconstrictive peptide. Intravenous administration of endothelin alone (400 pmol/kg) to anesthetized dogs produced blood pressure elevation, which was associated with an increase in cardiac output in the early phase, and was associated with an increase in total peripheral resistance in the late phase. Electrocardiogram showed significant ST-elevation in II, III, and aVL, and ST-depression in a VR and aVL. The same dose of endothelin given to dogs pretreated with cromakalim did not induce these hemodynamic and electrocardiographic changes. Thus, cromakalim, a potassium activator, inhibited the hemodynamic and electrocardiographic actions of endothelin, suggesting that hyperpolarization due to potassium channel activation inhibited the voltage-dependent calcium channel, which is thought to be a major mechanism for the pressor action of endothelin.

    Notes: Abstract Monodispersed TiO2 particles were used to prepare a uniformly packed green compact with a high relative density by slip casting. A suspension consisting of monodispersed TiO2 particles, solvent and binder was cast in the mould. The sintering behaviour of the green compact was investigated. The green compact could be sintered to a relative density of 〉 99% by treatment at 1050 °C for 120 min. The average grain size of the sintered body was 1.26 μm without abnormal grain growth. The green sheet cast on a glass board could be densified with no grain growth. The experimentally obtained relation between densification rate and grain size indicated a volume diffusion mechanism according to Coble's equation.

    Notes: Abstract The interfacial properties between pitch-based carbon fibre and semicrystalline thermoplastic matrices have been investigated by using the fragmentation test on single-fibre composites. For this purpose, fibres with seven different degrees of surface oxidation were prepared. From the fragmentation test, it was found that oxidization of carbon fibre reduces the fibre fragment length. Further, the length is also influenced by the nature of resin used as matrix. The morphology of crystallites formed on the fibres has been studied. Based on these results, the interfacial properties of carbon fibre and thermoplastic resins are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Blending of poly (2,6-dimethylphenylene ether) (PPE), polystyrene (PS) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was performed using a continuous co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The influence of LCP content on the blending process was studied by changing the barrel heater temperature and the screw speed. The torque of the screw shafts generated during the blending process was influenced by LCP content; its influence was not simple. The generated torque was found to depend not only on the melt viscosity of LCP but also on its distortion temperature. Further, the effects of matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PPE/PS/LCP blends were studied. Well-developed fine LCP fibrils were formed during the melt-drawing process when the matrix viscosity was high. The formation of well-developed fine fibrils was found to improve the mechanical properties of the PPE/PS/LCP blend. Two mechanisms are proposed for the formation of well-developed fine LCP fibrils.

    Notes: Abstract Spectral analysis of heart rate fluctuation was evaluated before and after administration of carteolol, a non-selectiveβ-adrenoceptor-blocker, to investigate the neural regulatory mechanisms underlying the haemodynamic changes induced by mental stress. Mental stress increased blood pressure and heart rate, with an increased low frequency band, and low frequency/high frequency ratio of the power spectral analysis which are indices of sympathetic activity. Carteolol did not change basal and pre-mental stress measurements of blood pressure, heart rate and spectral density. However, carteolol altered the response to mental stress with a decrease in spectral density of the low frequency band and low frequency/high frequency ratio, and an increase in the high frequency component. These results confirm that mental stress elevates blood pressure by activating the sympathetic nervous system, and suggest that blockade of theβ-adrenoceptor attenuates the pressor response by preventing the autonomic responses to mental stress.

The torque generated during the blending process was not directly related to the apparent melt viscosity of blends. Further, the effects of the matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blends were studied using three grades of PS as matrix resins. It was found that the size of the LCP dispersed phase decreased with increasing matrix viscosity. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blend were improved. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
