Notes: Abstract A few models of nonlinear optical systems, known experimentally to possess both stable and unstable dynamical modes, are approximated by different dynamical models and integrated by different numerical methods. It is shown that the onset of instabilities and chaotic behavior in the same physical system may be dependent on the model used and on the numerical method applied. Finite order difference schemes should be applied with caution to infinite dimensional dynamical systems displaying irregular behavior.

Notes: The fhuE gene of Escherichia coli codes for an outer-membrane receptor protein required for the uptake of iron(III) via coprogen, ferrioxamine B and rhodotorulic acid. The amino acid sequence, deduced from the nucleotide sequence, consisted of 729 residues. The mature form, composed of 693 residues, has a calculated molecular weight of 77453, which agrees with the molecular weight of 76000 determined by poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The FhuE protein contains four regions of homology with other TonB-dependent receptors. A valine to proline exchange in the ‘TonB box’ absolished transport activity. Phenotypic revertants with substitutions of arginine, glutamine, or leucine at the valine position exhibited Increasing iron-coprogen transport rates. Point mutations resulting in the replacement of glycine (127) in the second homology region with either alanine, aspartate, valine, asparagine or histidine exhibited decreased transport rates (listed in descending order). A truncated FhuE protein lacking 24 amino acids at the C-terminal end was exported to the periplasm but failed to be inserted into the outer membrane.

Notes: Abstract We consider a passive optical system consisting of a ring cavity and a homogeneously broadened two-level medium. We find that a spatial modulation of the input beam imposes processes of competition between the external modulation frequency and the internal space frequencies which emerge from modulation instabilities. This leads to symmetry breaking phenomena when both the amplitude and the wavelength of the modulation are increased and results in the coexistence of periodic attractors. We numerically analyze the corresponding bifurcations and find that they can be explained by a generalization of the concept of cooperative frequency locking although the bifurcating attractors are periodic and are not related to linear resonator modes.

Notes: Abstract New dyes with characteristic fluorescence lifetimes have been developed for bioanalytical applications. Based upon the concept of “multiplex dyes,” we have designed rhodamine dyes with nearly identical absorption and emission spectral characteristics but different fluorescence lifetimes. Extending this principle to applications with laser diodes, new rhodamines with functional groups for covalent coupling of analytes have been developed. The new labels exhibit absortion and fluorescence beyond 600 nm and have a high quantum efficiency, even in aqueous buffer systems.

Notes: Abstract To detect several antigens simultaneously, antibodies directed against different antigens were immobilized on a quartz surface. The antigens were tagged with multiplex, dyes, which show different fluorescence lifetimes but similar excitation and emission spectra. The antigens were detected by recognizing the characteristic fluorescence lifetime. Furthermore, the effect of labeling of the dye on the antigen molecules was examined.

Description / Table of Contents: The Formation of Intermetallic Compounds between Platinum and Lanthanides (Ln) in the Presence of Iodine (Ln=Gd, Sm).Reactions at 800°C in the system Pt/Gd/I produce the intermetallic compounds GdPt5, GdPt3 (AuCu3-type), and GdPt2 (MgCu2-type) depending on the ratio Gd:Pt and the iodine quantity. Using thermodynamic data the equilibrium conditions for the existence of the phases are evaluated and the experimental results interpreted. Using the same conditions in the case of the system Pt/Sm/I exclusively SmPt5 is produced. The results are explained on the basis of the expected difference in the heats of formation of GdI2 and SmI2.
