Notes: Abstract Production of t-PA by human embryonic lung fibroblasts, IMR-90 cells, is regulated by negative feedback control. The increase in the concentration of the extracellular t-PA lead to a reduction of the production. Therefore, we investigated the application of t-PA adsorption column to ceramic bed reactor to promote t-PA production. Amberlite XAD-8 was selected out as an adsorbent, because it is autoclavable and can adsorb 32,000 IU of t-PA per g wet gel. The t-PA adsorption column was located in the medium recirculation line to the vessel. On the other hand, medium was recirculated between the ceramic bed reactor and the vessel using another flow line. The bioreactor system with the adsorption column was about 2.5 times higher with the resulting cumulative t-PA than that without the adsorption column.

Notes: Abstract Two-beam coupling gain and speed of a Cr-doped strontium-barium niobate single crystal at 514.5 nm and 632.8 nm are measured to compare photorefractive origins and responses. The same single deep center and single carriers are found to be responsible for the observed photorefractivities at both wavelengths. Self-pumped phase-conjugate reflectivities are also measured at both wavelengths.

Notes: Summary We reviewed the surgical outcome in 85 patients with ruptured anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysms, who were operated on within 72 hours of onset via a basal interhemispheric (BIH) approach (Group 1, N=48), or an anterior interhemispheric (AIH) approach (Group 2, N=37). The age, sex ratio and pre-operative grade (Gr) were similar for both groups. The outcome at the time of discharge was as follows for group 1: excellent or good 88%; fair, 6%; vegetative state, 2% and death 4%. For group 2, it was: excellent or good 78%; fair, 16%; vegetative state, 3%; and death, 3%. A significant correlation between admission grade and outcome was found in both groups. The outcome in group 1 was better than in group 2 for patients with a Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) better than fair (p 〈 0.07). No patient in group 1 had postoperative anosmia, but nine patients in group 2 became anosmic. The total number of complications was also significantly less in group 1. Our overall mortality rate was 4%. In conclusion, the BIH approach was more beneficial for treating acute ACoA aneurysm.

Notes: Summary Out of 3435 patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular disease 2540 cases were investigated using cerebral angiography. In 127 of them (5%) aneurysms were found, but without clinical evidence of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). 45 cases were operated upon and 82 were treated conservatively. Five of these 82 cases (6%) suffered from SAH 3 months to 10 years (mean interval 5,6 years) after the angiographic diagnosis. Four of these 5 patients with SAH died. Among the 45 surgical cases follow-up was uneventful in 29 (64%). The other 16 cases postoperatively showed neurological deterioration (36%), which was transient in 6 but with only minor improvement in 10. Of these 10 cases 2 died from cerebral infarction related to intra-operative temporary vascular occlusion respectively myocardial infarction. Thus surgical mortality was 4% and permanent morbidity 18%. Causes of postoperative neurological deterioration were partly related to general arteriosclerotic changes and special fragility of the ischaemic brain, and partly to operative technique (excessive brain retraction, damage to cortical veins, occlusion of major vessels or damage to perforators, temporary artery occlusion). Apparently in cases with ischaemic cerebrovascular diseases operative procedures, which in other cases as a rule are well tolerated, may produce harmful effects. Therefore, in these cases, the indication for operative treatment of so far silent aneurysms should be restricted to patients who are in good general condition with longer life expectancy as far as the vascular disease is concerned, and without major neurological deficit. Furthermore, the operative technique should be especially gentle and atraumatic.

    Notes: A Bowman–Birk type trypsin inhibitor I-2, Mr = 14 000, 123 amino-acid residues, isolated from wheat germ, and its complex with trypsin have been crystallized. For I-2 two morphologically different crystal forms were obtained. Crystal form 1 is tetragonal, P4122 or P4322, with a = 55.45 (2), c = 129.1 (2) Å and V = 3.97 (2) × 105 Å3. The crystals diffract X-rays very anisotropically, to less than 6 Å resolution normal to the c* direction, but up to 3 Å resolution in the other directions. Crystal form 2 is monoclinic, space group C2. The cell parameters show significant variation even for crystals in the same batch. The median parameters are: a = 83.9, b = 41.5, c = 45.7 Å, β = 95.9° and V = 1.58 × 105 Å3. The diffraction pattern is isotropic and reflections up to 2.2 Å resolution were observed. The crystals of the complex between bovine trypsin and I-2 (2:1) belong to the orthorhombic space group P212121 with a = 73.49 (2), b = 120.56 (3), c = 70.04 (2) Å and V = 6.206 (5) × 105 Å3. The crystals diffract up to 2.3 Å resolution, and contain one complex of 60 100 Da in an asymmetric unit.

Notes: Equilibrium diameter and stress change of cylindrical N-isopropylacrylamide gels of submillimeter diameter were measured as a function of temperature under mechanical constraint along the uniaxial direction. As a result, the transition temperature increased up to 1 °C with increasing the strain, which indicates the possibility of the uniaxial strain-induced phase transition of gels at selected temperatures. The diameter and stress change were quite successfully described by the phenomenological model on the basis of the extended Flory-type free energy. The time course of the change in diameter and stress was also studied after the large steplike elongation was rapidly applied. A gradual increase in diameter during decrease in stress was detected clearly in the swollen phase, which is due to the relaxation of polymer segmental units to approach the favored conformation under the strong deformation. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The background pressure dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of Co/Cu multilayer films and the effect of the Fe buffer layer were studied. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurement of the films and in situ quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) analysis in conjunction with background pressure dependence of MR ratio confirmed that the oxidation of Co/Cu gives a crucial influence to the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect. The oxidation of Co/Cu weakens the antiferromagnetic coupling, and results in the low MR ratio. The Fe buffer layer absorbs the residual oxygen, and this leads to the increase of the MR ratio. The MR ratio of (Co1 nm/Cu1 nm)100/Fe2.5 nm film deposited under low background pressure and high deposition rate so as to suppress oxidation reached over 80% at RT and 160% at 2 K.

Notes: We report a primary non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma of the urethra in a 78-year-old female. Serum antibodies for Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) were negative, but there was a 40-fold increase in antibodies to EBV-associated nuclear antigen. Using PCR and in situ hybridization techniques, EBV genome was found in the tumour cell nuclei.

Notes: The light-induced decrease of the photoconductivity in deuterated amorphous silicon is a factor of 3 less even though the defect density increase is greater than in hydrogenated material having equivalent as-deposited properties. Consequent changes in the average recombination cross section of the defects is illustrated. Since the differences in the light soaking behavior upon isotopic substitution has been found to disappear in films deposited at low temperatures, the changes are thought to arise from differences in the silicon network occurring during growth.

Notes: Photoconductive and stable hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films, prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a Xe-silane mixture at a substrate temperature of 250 °C, did not show any photo-induced degradation of the photoconductivity after 104 min light soaking (air mass-1, 100 mW/cm2). The network structure of these films is inhomogeneous and includes a large amount of clustered hydrogen as indicated by the low-temperature thermal effusion and the large, broad component in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum.
