    Notes: The two-dimensional crystal structure of poly(p-phenylene) is investigated by linkedatom Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffraction powder profile. Two molecular chains are packed in a rectangular pgg unit cell (a = 0.779 nm; b = 0.551 nm) with a paracrystalline shift distortion along the chain axis. The molecular conformation is not rigidly planar; rotations between adjacent phenyl-ring planes in a molecule alternate with an angle of about 20°. The setting angle between the mean molecular plane and the a axis is 55.5°.

    Notes: Summary To clarify the implication of the major histocompatibility complex class II (Ia) antigen induction in microglia following Wallerian degeneration in the central nervous system (CNS), experimental allergic encephalitis (EAE) was adoptively transferred to Lewis rats in which Ia antigens had been induced in microglia at the sites of Wallerian degeneration. In addition to randomly distributed typical EAE lesions, the recipient rats developed distinct inflammatory lesions in accord with the distribution of Ia-positive microglia; i.e., in the ipsilateral thalamus after cortical cryoinjury, and in the ipsilateral optic nerve, the contralateral optic tract and superior colliculus after unilateral eye ball enucleation. Thus, the EAE locus may be targeted by this approach. The inflammatory response was inducible by transfer of myelin basic protein-stimulated lymphocytes but not by transfer of phytohemagglutinin-stimulated or non-stimulated lymphocytes. When examined using monoclonal antibody surface markers; OX-6 for Ia antigen, W3/13 for pan T lymphocyte and OX-8 for cytotoxic/suppresser T lymphocyte, the types of lymphocytes in these lesions did not differ from those in ordinary EAE lesions in the spinal cord. The potential role of non-immunologically induced Ia-positive cell clusters that serve as a target for autoimmune CNS diseases was discussed.

    Notes: Summary The peripheral nervous system of a mutant of a Japanese quail deficient in neurofilaments (mutant) and of a normal Japanese quail (control) was morphometrically evaluated to characterize the morphological findings, especially those of the myelinated fibers of the mutant. In the proximal peroneal nerves, the frequency of the teased myelinated fibers showing the focal myelin thickening was higher in mutant than in control (P〈0.001) without obvious ongoing axonal degeneration and segmental demyelination. The total numbers of the myelinated fibers in the proximal and distal peroneal nerve, and in the tibial nerve branch to gastrocnemius muscle (pars medialis) were similar between control and mutant, although the number of the large myelinated fibers was less (P〈0.01) and the number of the small myelinated fibers was greater (P〈0.01) in mutant compared with control. The median diameters of neuronal cell bodies of the sacral dorsal root ganglia were similar in control and mutant. The percentages of light, dark and unclassified cells evaluated based on the histologic cytoplasmic features were also similar in control and mutant. Therefore, morphometric alterations were more pronounced in the peripheral myelinated nerve fibers compared with those in the cell bodies of the spinal dorsal root ganglia. We concluded that a smaller number of large myelinated fibers with a greater number of small myelinated fibers and the presence of focal myelin thickening are the main morphologic findings in this mutant, probably due to the arrest of radial growth or maturation of the axons of the myelinated fibers in the absence of ongoing myelinated fiber degeneration.

    Notes: Abstract Immunohistochemical methods were employed to investigate the cellular and ultrastructural localization of the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43) in rat pituitary. Western blots of pituitary homogenates probed with anti-Cx43 antibodies showed the presence of Cx43 in both anterior and posterior pituitary lobes. By light microscopy (LM), Cx43-immunoreactive (Cx43-IR) puncta were found in all areas of the posterior lobe, but at greater concentrations in peripheral regions of this structure. By electron microscopy (EM), immunogold labelling for Cx43 was seen at gap junctions between thin cytoplasmic processes of pituicytes. No immunoreactivity was detected in the intermediate lobe. The anterior lobe contained puncta similar to but more sparsely scattered than those in the posterior lobe, and by EM analysis these were demonstrated to correspond to labelled gap junctions between stellate cells. In addition, anti-Cx43 antibodies produced intracellular labelling in a small percentage of endocrine cells, which were distributed throughout the anterior lobe and determined by double immunostaining methods to be cells containing luteinizing hormone. By EM, labelling within these cells was associated with predominantly large secretory granules and other loosely organized organelles. The results indicate that gap junctions in the pituitary are composed of Cx43 and that this or a related protein may have a novel intracellular function within gonadotrophs.

    Notes: Structure, magnetic properties and recording characteristics of the CoPtB(O) media with various underlayers were investigated. Recording performance of the CoPtB(O) perpendicular media is closely related to the crystallinity. Magnetic properties and recording characteristics are much improved by the Au seed layer, and higher reproduced output can be obtained at 200 kFRPI. CoPtB(O) perpendicular media show higher resolution than the CoPtB(O)/Cr longitudinal one. The reproduced output of perpendicular media at 200 kFRPI is more than 10 dB higher than that of the longitudinal one. Noise characteristics of both media are quite different in the recording density response. With increasing recording density, the media noise of longitudinal media slightly increases, while that of the perpendicular one gradually decreases. This means for the perpendicular media that the media noise might originate not from the magnetic transition but from the irregular magnetic reversals within recorded bits.

    Notes: Abstract: To expand on the nature of regional cerebral vulnerability to ischemia, the release of dopamine (DA) and dopaminergic (D1 and D2) receptors were investigated in Mongolian gerbils subjected to bilateral carotid artery occlusion (15 min) alone or with reflow (1–2 h). Extracellular cortical and striatal content of DA and its metabolites was measured by microdialysis using HPLC with electrochemical detection. The kinetic properties of D1 and/or D2 receptor binding sites were determined in cortical and striatal membranes with the use of radiolabeled ligands (125I-SCH23982 and [3H]YM-09151-2, respectively). The ischemic release of DA from the striatum was greater (400-fold over preischemic level) than that from the cortex (12-fold over preischemic content). The affinity for the D1-receptor ligand was lower (KD= 1.248 ± 0.047 nM) after ischemia than that for sham controls (KD= 0.928 ± 0.032 nM, p 〈 0.001). The number of binding sites for D2 receptors decreased in striatum (Bmax= 428 ± 18.4 fmol/mg of protein) after ischemia compared with sham controls (Bmax= 510 ± 25.2 fmol/mg of protein, p 〈 0.05). D1 or D2 binding sites were not changed either in the ischemic cortex or postischemic striatum and cortex. The findings strongly suggest that the ischemic release of DA from striatum is associated with early transient changes in D1- and D2-mediated DA neurotransmission.

    Notes: The morphology and size distribution of oxide precipitates in as-grown Czochralski (CZ) silicon crystals, with growth rates of about 1.1 mm/min, have been studied using infrared light scattering tomography (LST). The following results were obtained. (1) The morphology of oxide precipitates in as-grown CZ silicon is polyhedral. (2) The length of the side of the polyhedral precipitates is about 80 nm. According to their morphology and size distribution, it was concluded that they were formed in the high temperature range (≥1000 °C) during crystal growth.
