Notes: Commercial scale production of a Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet has been successfully developed. Presently manufactured sheets are in coil form, whose thickness ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 mm with a maximum width of 400 mm. Magnetic properties of the manufactured sheet have been investigated. The permeability of Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet is about 10 times higher than the conventional nonoriented silicon steel sheet. The core losses are less than half the conventional, and even less than that of the grain-oriented silicon steel sheet at frequencies over 400 Hz. Superior soft magnetic properties are attributed to the low magnetostriction and high electric resistivity of this alloy. It is well known that the Fe-6.5 wt. % Si alloy has poor ductility in conventional mechanical work. But investigation of the forming conditions has enabled the stamping and bending of alloy sheets. Low core losses and high permeability make Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet adequate for motor cores, transformer cores operating at high frequencies, and magnetic shielding. Application to the micromotor core shows that Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet reduces the consumption of no-load electric current by 25% in comparison with the conventional silicon steel.

Notes: This paper describes a two c-core type orthogonal-core made of Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet and its application to power converters. The orthogonal-core can be used in the high-frequency region because a Fe-6.5 wt. % Si sheet has superior soft magnetic properties including high permeability and low core loss. Using the orthogonal-core, we constructed a parametric oscillation type dc-ac converter. The dc-ac converter had voltage regulation, overload protection, noise rejection, and almost sinusoidal output. Good efficiency was obtained in the frequency range from 400 Hz to 1 kHz. Furthermore, we propose a dc-dc converter for coupling two independent dc power sources. The dc-dc coupling converter has bilateral power transfer and ease of controlling the transferred power. The basic operation of the dc-dc coupling converter is described.

Notes: Summary Various types of actinomycin (C, D, S2, I and V) and 7-amino-analogue of actinomycin D were injected into the right lateral ventricle of the brain through a chronically implanted cannula. In rats but not in mice actinomycin D, actinomycin S2 and 7-aminoactinomycin D caused depression of EEG, while cardiac and respiratory activity were maintained. This effect of the EEG was reversible and a normal EEG pattern reappeared at least 3 h after administration.

Notes: Summary Chronological changes in diffuse brain swelling and brain oedema were studied in repeated CT studies following a closed head injury. These findings were compared with changes in intracranial pressure (ICP). The grades of diffuse brain swelling were classified into mild, moderate and marked according to the CT findings. Planimetry of low density areas of brain oedema was carried out on repeated CT images. Diffuse brain swelling was recognized in 71 of patients shortly after the head injury and subsided within days 3–5. Brain oedema first appeared 24 hours post injury and did not reach its maximum size and distribution before days 5–8. Thus, these two events can be clearly separated. The intracranial pressure reflected the course of the brain swelling and was not very high during the presence of maximum oedema.

Notes: Summary Enhanced cisternal drainage was performed following early aneurysm surgery in patients with Hunt and Kosnik grades I–III, to effect continuous wash-out of subarachnoid blood clots and reduce symptomatic vasospasm. Following extensive evacuation of the cisternal blood clots, the Liliequist's membrane was opened extensively and a third ventriculostomy was effected by opening the lamina terminals. The drainage effect was considered as poor, moderate or fair, depending on the average amount of CSF drainage/day. SAH was graded into 0–III depending on the severity of cisternal haematoma in the pre-operative CT. No symptomatic vasospasm occurred in patients with SAH grade I. In SAH grade II +III patients symptomatic vasospasm occurred in 78,60 and 42% of patients with a poor, moderate and fair drainage effect, respectively. Nine patients who developed symptomatic vasospasm were treated by hypertensive/hypervolemic therapy (HHT). The HHT was effective in 7 patients with fair and moderate CSF drainage and ineffective in 2 patients with poor a drainage effect. It seems, that enhanced post-operative cisternal drainage can reduce the incidence of symptomatic vasospasm and be of benefit to the outcome of early aneurysm surgery.

Notes: Summary We attempted to determine wheter all cases of AWTA (anirida-Wilms tumor association) or any of the following groups of patients show 11p deletion: cases of Wilms tumor with congenital abnormalities other than aniridia, those without any congenital abnormalities, tumor itself in cases of Wilsm tumor without constitutional 11p deletion and cases of aniridia or hemihypertrophy without Wilms tumor. We studied a total of 29 index patients including five cases of AWTA, four cases of Wilms tumor with various congenital abnormalities, 16 cases of Wilms tumor without other abnormalities, three cases of aniridia in one of which Wilms tumor developed later and a case of hemihypertrophy. In all five cases of AWTA and in a case of aniridia who later developed Wilms tumor, 11p deletion involving the p13 band was detected. The mother of the latter also showed an identical 11p deletion. The common segment of deletion was the middle part of the p13. Two possible hypotheses on the mechanism through which Wilms tumor might develop were evaluated, based on the distribution of break points. All other cases, including five with tumor culture, showed a normal karyotype.
