    Notes: Heat treatment effects on an In-GaAs ohmic contact are reported. Our finding is that the contact resistance of In to GaAs exhibits a practically insignificant increase after a heat treatment at a temperature of up to 900 °C. Results of secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis show that the diffusion constant of In in GaAs is 3.3×10−5 exp(−1.9/kT) cm2/s. Moreover, a thermodynamic analysis gives the result that an InGaAs layer is formed between GaAs and In during the course of the heat treatment process. It is concluded from the above two analyses that the high stability of the contact resistance we have found is attributable to the low diffusion constant of In in GaAs and to the growth of an InGaAs interfacial layer.

    Notes: The new, compact data-acquisition system of the reversed field pinch device, REPUTE-1, is reported. Its distinctive feature is high flexibility and easy handling. The interface between the computer and measurement devices is CAMAC. The computer and the CAMAC devices are connected to a CAMAC byte serial highway that transmits setup parameters and acquisition data. The computer carries out setup of CAMAC devices and data acquisition automatically by use of CAMAC parameters and the acquisition data base. The maintenance tools for the data base are also provided. The computer system, which consists of a "TOSBAC DS-600,'' has been in operation for REPUTE-1 since 1985.

    Notes: A Fermi surface study of the ferromagnetic phase of CeSb is presented. The γ frequency branches arising from the electron surfaces at the X points, three separate frequency branches from the hole surfaces at the Γ point, and the low-frequency branch α have been observed. The effective mass ratios are low and range from ∼0.2 for the α branch to ∼1.0 for the high-frequency branch of γ. The low effective mass ratios suggest that the admixture of the conduction states with the f state is small. We have observed a drastic change in the appearance of the de Haas–van Alpen signal at the phase transition between the ferromagnetic and lower field antiferromagnetic phases: the low-frequency α oscillation suddenly disappears as the crystal enters the antiferromagnetic phase. By utilizing the change in the signal appearance, the transition field strength has been measured as a function of the field direction. The present experimental results particularly the origin of the α oscillation, are discussed in the light of the p-f mixing theory and recent band-structure calculations based on localized f orbitals.

    Notes: Summary We have evaluated the anatomical structure of cavernous sinuses in parasellar blocks obtained from adult cadavers to gain clinically useful information. Ten microdissectional studies of parasellar blocks (20 sides of cavernous sinus) were carried out with special emphasis on the course of paracavernous cranial nerves (3rd to 6th). These were also examined on plain radiographs. Secondly, CT investigations of the cavernous sinuses (notably as to paracavernous cranial nerves) were undertaken in twenty clinical cases having presumed parasellar lesions and in three parasellar blocks from cadavers. The results from microdissectional studies and plain radiographs were as follows. It was found that the 3rd cranial nerve entered the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus close to the antero-inferior part of the posterior clinoid on lateral projection. The 4th cranial nerve, on the other hand, entered near the postero-inferior portion of the posterior clinoid on the same view. Variations in Parkinson's triangle were fairly often noted, although marked asymmetry was not seen in individual cases. From CT findings, it was found that a postenhanced, magnified direct coronal study was essential for identifying paracavernous cranial nerves more clearly. The 3rd and 5th cranial nerves were fairly well identified on axial and coronal projections. Careful radiological investigation including plain skull radiographs & CT seems to be of value for those who diagnose or treat parasellar lesions.

    Notes: Summary A rare case of infrasellar craniopharyngioma mainly occupying the paranasal sinuses, the infratemporal fossa and the skull base is presented. The patient had been treated by an otolaryngologist as a case of mucocele of the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses because the biopsy specimens obtained at endonasal surgery failed to confirm the true diagnosis. Computed tomography (CT) showed multilobulated low density cysts in the paranasal sinuses, infratemporal fossa and skull base, and the cyst wall was enhanced. Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) revealed the cysts to have high intensity in both T1-and T2-weighted images, and excellent three-dimensional visualization was obtained. Characteristic motor-oil-like fluid was aspirated during transnasal surgery and the diagnosis of craniopharyngioma was confirmed by histological examination.

    Notes: Summary It is still unknown when and in which area endothelial regeneration occurs after brain injury, and to what extent such changes depend on the severity of the injury. We have, therefore, studied bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) uptake by regenerating endothelial cells in two different groups of rats given cold lesions using immunohistochemistry employing anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody, anti-factor VIII-related antigen antibody and anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein antibody. The earliest evidence for the presence of BrdU-positive endothelial cells (BrdU+end) was observed at 2 days after injury, the injured endothelial cells regenerating from the edge toward the center of the lesion in both groups. We considered that edema fluid could act as an important factor, since at 2 days post-injury BrdU+end were not in contact with macrophages and were always found in Evans blue-stained areas. Study of endothelial cell kinetics also confirmed that the repair of injured endothelial cells was intimately involved in the reconstruction of the blood-brain barrier, since the time of disappearance of BrdU+end coincided with the disappearance of Evans blue-stained areas. The difference in the process of endothelial regeneration was first apparent on the 3rd day, there being no difference at 2 days.

    Notes: Summary The three-dimensional microvascular architecture of human glioma was investigated. The results of the study, the first of its kind, suggested that the process of vascularization in glioma is based on two patterns. In a large proportion of the glioma, one pattern is similar to the vascularization observed in normal developing fetal and newborn rat brain, while in a small proportion of the glioma, another pattern including complicated vascular protrusion and spiral running, is seen.
